Dolphins: Believe It Or Not

Evan Mathis was cut today. The Miami Dolphins’ Front Office will have the opportunity and the cap space to sign him. We will get to see how much they actually believe in the guards on the roster – Dallas, Turner and Douglas…or how much they don’t. Even if they don’t ink Mathis to a contract, the very fact that they made overtures will say a lot. Yes, they could always use the fail safe lines ‘we were doing due diligence’ or ‘it was just kicking the tires’ or some other canned line. Fact is, if they believe they have the answer on the roster why would they try to acquire a very expensive asset unless they believe it is a huge upgrade.

Mathis will be expensive, maybe even more than the five million, he was scheduled to receive before his cut from the eagles. The Saints, Atlanta, Seahawks, and Dolphins are among rumored suitors. He is an experienced veteran who is at the top of his positional food chain. He’ll want a contract of at least 2 years and at 33 that could be playing with fire. There is still tread on his tires so the gamble could pay off – but with the combination of high price and age, would it be worth it?

There are a couple of flip sides to this.

  • First flip side:

what would Miami’s offensive line look like if a pro-bowl guard was inserted alongside Pouncey, Albert, and James? Imagine the talent of the lines on both sides of the ball? The level of the line of scrimmage domination sends shivers up ‘me leg’. The magnitude of skill payers enhancement due to wider holes and longer protection would be tremendous – if Mathis pans out! That’s the keyword: if. But, what if he does?!

  • Second flip side:

what if they don’t sign him. This one will be very interesting. We will see how great the Front Office’s acumen is. What if they prove to be right and the younger, cheaper players turnout fantastic seasons? For me, this would be the cherry on the top of this season. I love when the Dolphins prove me wrong and it turns out to be a better outcome. Even with my own immense ego, the success of my beloved Fins trumps all. I would love them to prove me wrong, so I could return to the blind faith I had as a fan many years ago.

  • Third flip side:

They don’t even chase him, the guard plays bombs and costs the team a successful season. I don’t even want to dig too deep into this one. It would be very bad and could be the nail in the coffin to the regime.

Well, in the end as Meatball once sang, “two out of three ain’t bad!” This will be a crucial turn in the road for the season any way you slice it. I believe this Front Office will do the right thing, the pay per head services site, AcePerHead.com…I’m just praying it will be a brilliant thing! Go Fins!!!

Been saying all along that I thought Mathis was going to be on this team at the start of the regular season. I just thought that it would involve a trade w/Jordan or Matthews. So I hope that he ends up here.
The only thing I don’t want to happen is he goes to the Patriots!!! I could see him choosing the Pats and helping them solidify one of their weaknesses.
    Go get him Fins brass!

    We have the money available
Next year we will be tight but not this year
We have a bit over 10 million left in the cap
Next year we will loose someone
Maybe Delmas maybe grimes and that will give us lots of cap space
Next year we have probably 3 additional third round compensatory picks for the players we lost this year to free agency
So we really will not have a cap problem next year
    So sign Mathis
Pay him 6 per year for 2 years guaranteed and 2 more non guaranteed years
    He cannot refuse that
The other teams have state income taxes
We are in a win now mode
    Philbin is on probation
    He is definitely an upgrade
He was the best guard in the NFL last year
It’s a no brainner go get him
Do we really want to gamble plus what if Albert is not ready
We need Mathis so sign him

I agree Ralph, we do have around $10 million of cap space for this season, so we can definitely pay Mathis what he wants and even give him more money upfront for this season. Mathis would be the kind of signing that can make us a legitimate playoff team. Our offensive line would overnight turn into a big strength on our team, and make our entire offense one of the best in the league

I have been of the mind that G was a huge weakness and we should sign him, but there are risks. Mostly cap space. They can easily be mitigated if they front load the contract. They will have to as the Dolphins are 160 on next years books and Vernon hasn’t been signed. Suh could renegotiate – and might have to. But, yeah this regime is on the edge of getting scrapped so they NEED to win. It will be a very interesting decision, one that they must get right. Go Fins.

Exactly Curtis, this regime needs to win now, and we have $10.3 million in cap space available so we can front load his contract and he could be a difference maker for our O-line and offense, and team
