There is an annual debate regarding the draft of whether a team should draft by their biggest need or the best available player on the board.
Regardless of what the best pay per head reviews experts think, there is not a definitive correct answer, because there are many different variables at play in each situation. Every so often a team gets lucky and is able to draft the best player available, and that player also fills the team’s biggest need. Another option is to draft the best player at a specific position if he is available, regardless of the degree of need at that position. One player that is ranked as the best player at his position that Miami may consider drafting in the first round is Landon Collins the safety from Alabama.
Safety is not the Dolphins biggest need, however, there is no guarantee that Louis Delmas is going to be healthy enough to start the season, and at the moment the Dolphins only have two unproven players Walt Aikens and Michael Thomas as possible back up safeties, so it is not a bad idea to draft a safety. Collins is the clear cut top-rated safety at 6’0”, 228 pounds and a 40 time of 4.53, and he is considered best suited to play the strong safety position, which is the position that Delmas plays.

In 2014 Collins had 103 tackles, 3 interceptions and 7 passes defended, and played in the ultra-competitive SEC Conference. Most sports gambling fans would agree that he would probably be a reach for Miami at the number 14 spot, but if Miami were to trade back in the first round then he would be a good value pick. Collins does well playing in the tackle box, however, he has had some issues in his college career covering receivers and tight ends in man coverage. He was picked on in the Ole Miss game, where he was burned for two touchdowns, so even though he may be the best of the bunch as a safety in this draft, he may not be worth the risk, because a safety, regardless of being a strong or free safety needs to be good in coverage.
Personally I think we probably need another safety on the roster because even if Delmas can start the season, that does not mean he will be able to finish the season because he has constantly had issues staying healthy throughout his entire career. However, even with that being said, I am not confident enough in Collins, to use a precious first-round pick on him. Instead, I would much rather select a safety in the middle rounds of the draft and use our first-round pick on a player that is more of a sure thing.
