Dolphins Crazy Win Offers Hope & Concern

The Dolphins have had some crazy wins in 2018… this one was the wildest

Dolphins were able to squash some sour grapes along with getting the “W”

Now that was one wild win for the Miami Dolphins! While the Phins lack consistency, they sure can keep you on the edge of your seat.

However you qualify the win, the Dolphins are in the hunt for a Playoff spot.

Without a doubt, I was happy to see Jordan Phillips eat crow. He’s a bum in every sense of the word as a  football player. He proved why he was let go with his idiotic penalty and attitude. Charles Clay, on the other hand, was a good player and a good guy. I didn’t take an extra joy in his failure.

Because of the nail-biting win, this week’s game against the Pats has real implications. Add to this, the Vikes and Jags look beatable, and the Bills, while at home, aren’t juggernauts.

So IF Miami wins this week things very interesting.

Still, we need to be sober about the realities because this is a very big ‘if’. Despite the hope brought by the victory, plenty of issues were made all too plain to see.

Now, it should be clear that Josh Allen brings unique qualities to the position, despite his shortcomings. Allen did the same thing to a tough Jags defense that he did to Miami. As I was watching the Jags / Bills game, I was amazed at what he was able to do. Is it a style of play that he can run forever? No. But in the short term, this type of play puts huge undo pressure on a defense. So some of the issues we saw this week won’t apply against the Pats. Of course, the breakdowns in the secondary and lack of run defense will certainly apply…. even more so.

The Good & Concerns:
  1. Ryan Tannehill had the type of game you want… for the most part. Yet, a bad pick and lack of yards takes some shine off his 3 touchdown performance. But this is the level of play many fans had hoped for.  While this game managing play won’t take over games, it will give Miami a chance week in and week out.
  2. Travis Swanson is missed. Jake Brendel is fine at Center… but anything that moves Ted Larsen from Left Guard is a good thing. He isn’t a Left Guard. Larsen constantly needs help from the Center and Davis is left along too much. This exposes the interior O-line. Brendel as Left Guard, Swanson as Center, and Davis at Right Guard is a much better lineup.
  3. Do we have Tightends on the roster? Nick O’Reilly made a big play on Sunday, but we need much more from the position. The disappointment in rookie Gesicki is growing exponentially.
  4. As I said before the game, Miami’s 2016 defense was All-World bad with Vance Joseph. In 2018, the defense is All-World bad with Matt Burke. We can talk about the coaches plenty… but the architects of this defense needs to be held accountable because they are the only constant. Maybe it would be better if Gase took a more macro view of his team rather than just on the offense.
  5. What a great nice pick in the 2nd Round Xavian Howard was! Will Miami pony up the dough to keep him? They certainly won’t let him go… Will they?
  6. Minkah was another very good pick. He has done a very fine job at every spot he has been put into. Image how good he’ll be when he is finally put in the spot he was meant for: Cover 1 Safety.
All that matters now is how Miami plays against the Pats this week

While Miami was able to pull in the win… with some help from former friends, they’ll need to play a ton better to beat the Pats. But, let’s remember Miami won against them last year… and that Dolphins team was worse. Problem is that unlike last season, New England can run the ball this time around.

Tannehill was again covered up in a critical situation this week This time it was with the Wildcat on 3rd & 1. Gase won’t be able to avoid having Tannehill make a critical play in a big spot against Belichick. Does Gase not trust Tannehill? Can Tannehill prove he isn’t the issue? Both coach and QB will need to be at their best this week to win.

I know this is for certain: Miami won’t get 13 penalties from their opponent this week to bail them out. This Sunday Miami won’t be given a damn thing. Heck, even the refs will likely be against them. If the Phins want the ‘W’ this week, they’ll need to take with both hands. Go Phins!!!
