With only 33 days left until the NFL Draft, and the bulk of the quality free-agents already signed, now is a good time to start analyzing potential players that could be drafted by the Miami Dolphins. As stated before in this, and other blogs, the Dolphins biggest needs are clearly another Tackle, Guard, and Linebacker, then probably Running back, and Corner-back.
I am not a big fan of drafting Offensive Lineman in the first round, however it is the Phins biggest weakness, and the lack of addressing it last season, and the subsequent result makes it glaringly obvious that if the Dolphins passing and running game is going to get better, then it needs to start in the trenches. They will have to draft at least one Tackle and one Guard, so Pay per head sites like Ace Per Head fans would wisely suggest using the 19th overall pick in the draft on an Offensive Tackle. The best OT in the draft by far is Auburn’s Greg Robinson, but unfortunately he will be long gone before the Dolphins make their first selection. Instead a more realistic choice is Michigan’s Taylor Lewan, who is 6’7”, weighs 309 and runs a very quick 4.87, and is projected as a Top 20 pick.
Taylor looked very impressive at the Combine, with a very fast 40 time and fluid field drills. He played in the very competitive Big 10, where they are known for their big beefy lineman, that can block for the ground and pound attack. He played very well, and won most of his blocking assignments against all the top competition he played, such as Iowa, Ohio State, Kansas State and Michigan State. He also improved his pass-blocking last year as well as increasing his consistency, two things that should not be taken for granted as an offensive lineman. Phins fans have first hand knowledge of offensive lineman being inconsistent. Also another one of Taylor’s virtues is that he plays with a mean streak, which is something that can not be taught. Yes he may get a flag here or there, or get into a bar fight, which he did back in December, but it would be a welcome addition to have an offensive lineman on this team that shows some fire and intensity, something which Jonathan Martin and the rest of the Phins lineman were lacking. Lewan is also known as an aggressive blocker who fights through the whistle, and has gotten better each season, and even become a team leader in the process. I don’t know about the rest of Phins Nation, but Lewan seems like exactly the type of player the Dolphins could use on the offensive line this year.
