The Dolphins needed a victory over San Fran… and got it in style
This week, the Miami Dolphins had their backs against the wall at 1-3 with the playoffs on the line. Though wounded, San Fran appeared in last year’s Super Bowl and is still dangerous at home.
The best pay per head sportsbook sites had Miami as a sizable underdog, so it appeared that the Phins 2020 Season was circling the drain…
… But, Vegas was dead wrong because Miami blew the doors off the 49ers to the tune of 43-17.
How about those Dolphins?!
The Dolphin players haven’t given up on the 2020 Season… and neither should fans
I’ve been clear about pumping the breaks on ‘Tua time’ because Ryan Fitzpatrick is THE best Phins quarterback… right now. There’s just no way on earth the players would believe that Fitzmagic isn’t their best bet to win on Sunday. For all his “ugly play”, Fitzpatrick is the driving force of the Phins offense with the 4th best QBR in the NFL! What a day Fitzpatrick had Sunday against the 49ers going 22 passes for 350 yard and 3 touchdowns.
We Phins fans need to keep our eyes on both the short and long game. Yes, Tua is the future, but I’m concerned with him succeeding when his day comes rather than when that day is. Having a team around him that knows how to win and has the edge of confidence is the best thing for Tua. And who can argue that this team is taking on that winning identity?
This win puts Miami in a position to make some noise in the 2020 Season. So, let’s stay focused on the playoffs because I know that’s exactly what Brian Flores and the Dolphins players are doing.
Plenty of players stepped up to throttle the 49ers
- DT Zach Seiler had another pretty good game… resign him ASAP if you ask me.
- CB Xavian Howard is nearly himself again and when Byron Jones gets in a groove, this could be a very good secondary.
- ED Andrew Van Ginkel continues to show development and bring some heat to opposing QBs.
- LB Kamu Grugier-Hill is currently ranked the 19th best covering linebacker over his 78 cover snaps and has an elite pass-rush grade of 83.5 by PFF.
- Safties Brandon Jones and Bobby McCain are playing excellent over the top. BTW: Both are playing vastly superior to former Phins Saftey Minkah Fitzpatrick.
- TE Mike Gesicki continues to be excellent in both receiving and blocking with the 6th best run-blocking grade for an inline blocker.
- WRs DeVante Parker, Isaiah Ford, Preston Williams, and Jakeem Grant are all having excellent season and give Miami a very potent and deep receiving group.
- RB Myles Gaskin contiunes to exceed expectations and make the most out of poor run blocking.
Brian Flores has guts and so does this team
Now, to be fair and dim some of the hyperbole going around: This wasn’t the biggest win of the Brian Flores era. A good and much-needed win? Yes. But, beating the Patriots up in Foxborough to knock them out of a Bye -Week Week 17 last year is still Brian Flores’s hallmark game. That win will be a tough one to outdo.
San Fran is a very good team that was missing their two best D-linemen, two quality cornerbacks, and Garoppolo who is normally only average was dinged and looked scared. I’m not taking anything from the Dolphins win. The Phins did what a good team should do to a wounded team: ram the defeat down their throat.
This victory showed a ton of guts… starting with the Head Coach.
How crazy was that 4th & 1 special team sneak on the 49ers side of the field? It was the dagger in their heart though.
That call took some steel from Brian Flores… and it’s just the type of mentality that all the best coaches have. Now, it’s one thing to call it, but it’s something else to pull it off. But, that’s what the type of mentality this team is developing.
Miami stopped Russell Wilson on a 4th and short last week and stopped San Fran on a 4th and short this week. On both sides of the ball, this team is proving themselves clutch. When’s the last time you can remember a Dolphins team come up this consistently big in key moments?
Next step towards this franchise turning the corner comes this week
The Jets are up next and Miami is finally the favorites to win. If the Phins do win, they’ll be .500 on the season with plenty of life left for a playoff berth. Miami should win this game… and sometimes those games can be the toughest games. How will this team respond? I just don’t see Brian Flores letting them rest on their laurels. Go Phins!!!
