Dolphins Sign Timmons And Rollin’ Big Three Days In A Row
Timmons is 31, but ultra durable and a legit force at MLB
The Miami Dolphins have all but nailed three consecutive days of Free Agency with the addition of Lawrence Timmons as the cheery on top.
Run stop an issue?
Add Timmons and pick up William Hayes for a song and dance of a 6th round pick.
Sad news was that the career of Isa Abdul-Quddus is over. What a good player and good guy… really a shame. He was a fantastic pickup for Miami, and best wishes for his future. But, Mike Tannenbaum added Nate Allen to the mix and slow rolled a need just like that.
Not saying Allen is of the same caliber as Quddus, but if you add Reshad Jones and Michael Thomas to the mix, it’s a stable top of the defense.
And that’s what they have done for three days: fill holes with solid to above average players.
You see, Miami finally figured out it’s not how many stars you have, but how few duds you have. Football is a team game, and a team is as strong as it’s weakest link.
TEAM… That’s what this new Dolphins franchise is all about: loyalty, commitment, execution, and character. I’ll take this team that’s brewing over anything over the last 25 years. There have been better Running Backs, better defensive players, better QB’s, but all of it–from FO, to HC, to squad… this is going to be the best team Miami has had since 1994… if they don’t screw up the draft.
Timmons exemplifies what the Dolphins have been missing
Say what you want about Tannenbum… and I’ve said alot!! But, so far he is looking to have two good off seasons back-to-back. Now, I understand he can jack it all up with a terrible draft, but honestly, I’m feeling real confident.
Real Bookies site might say bad luck is coming considering this is the Dolphins we are talking about, but I think those days are done. Fin Fans finally have the team they have waited for… and the team true Fin Fans have deserved. Go Fins!!!

There are still some free agent guards out there. Andrew Gardner, former Dolphins draft pick could fill the guard spot since Gase runs the zone blocking scheme. They don’t need a pro bowl player just someone competent considering that Fasano was signed to be a blocker, Julius Thomas was obtained to split the seam and be a red zone target, and Stills was re-signed to take the top off the defense. I agree the FO/HC will add another guard whether by free agency or the draft. They could even bring back Bushrod. I just don’t see a guard worthy of the 22nd pick after the top rated one is off the board but certainly one in the second round is a consideration.
There are also some DT still available in free agency. Dontari Poe is the best one but he’s going to want a brinks truck full of cash so I doubt you’ll see him in a Dolphins uniform. A backup type to spell Jordan Phillips is still out there.
Signing Timmons was good but we still need a SAM and Nate Allen removes safety as a pressing need.
The FO/HC finds themselves in a good position with BPA options for pick 22. They could even trade for a later pick if there’s a willing partner out there.
Salguero did a nice article explaining how Gase likes the 12 offense but was stuck running the 11 offense due to the limitations at the TE position. Now that the issue has been addressed, assuming that both TE remain healthy, Gase will have more options in his offense and the running game should be much better this year.
This has been an exciting offseason thus far. Jimmy and MJ, you guys have done a great job. Keep up the good work and GO DOLPHINS!
A few weeks ago, I wrote on this blog that Miami was in a position to draft BPA. My comment was viewed with a bit of skepticism. Back then, I made that statement based on the fact that we had so many needs that any BPA would surely fill one. Today, I repeat that same statement but now with a different reasoning. The current free agent signings.
Signing Timmons now means that if the BPA at 22 is a LB, that could still be the pick but we now could go with a different position.
Trading for Hayes now means the pick could be DT/DE but again not essential. Same can be said about almost any of the defensive positions.
I also said that TE was a possibility at 22. Some of you will say “but Fritz, we just traded for Julius Thomas and signed Anthony Fasano!” Well, Fasano is on a one year deal, so a drafted TE would be groomed this year and make it where Fasano could be expendable in 2018.
Ah! But what about guard. Lemmus is not sold on Larsen. Well, I had never heard of him before the Dolphins signed him so I can’t really argue in favor of him. But I can say that if BPA is an OG, there’s the pick.
I could go on but you all get my drift. I’m not about to predict who the Phins draft at 22 but I hope its Zack Cunningham LB out of Vanderbilt or O.J. Howard TE out of Alabama. But I’m gonna be happy with almost anyone drafted because that’s how much confidence I now have in FO and HC based on what has been done since Gase got here. With a few more decent free agents out there, we could be sitting pretty come April’s draft. Go Dolphins!
Not sure where I fell in in response to your comment (can’t remember), but I agree that it will be BPA within a spectrum of needs: LB,DT,G,LB or TE. If they went TE, it might put a lot of negative pressure if they don’t fill the LG hole– so if they go that route, then they’d better have limited issue at G. I think the second round pick is more crucial than the first, because it’s pretty hard to screw up the first round pick… the second though is far easier– and due to remaining holes they need at least 2-3 starters from the draft. They must get a quality LG or the whole house comes down. I don’t think any other position is as desperate. Now, that doesn’t mean they go first round with it, but it gets harder after that to be certain you have a starter… and the second pick obviously their next best option, untile the end of the 3rd. So, I might be wrong, but I’d be disappointed if they didn’t get a G (or Tackles converting over) in rounds 1 or 2. Not saying they couldn’t get a stud beyond, but I would be confident. Of course, the Pats just won a championship with 2 G”s and a C who together makes peanuts. I’ll be happy however they draft as long as LG is taken care with talent and RG is solidified.
Nice addition But we have much work to do.

Defense Win Games!
Agree, but Timmons and Hayes at good addition to stopping the run. My thing is there are so many holes and only so much money. You can’t get something built fast, with good quality, and cheap… something has to be sacrificed somewhere. I like this design,IF the nail the draft and add one more quality FA.
…guardsguardsguardsguardsguardsguardsguardsguardsguardsguardsguardsguardsguardsguardsguardsguards
…am I being repetitive here?
…3 days into FA and we have not addressed the critical issue of no starting caliber guards as defined by me, myself, and I …aka anyone with any football common sense
…or anyone who thinks protecting a QB who has to wear a knee brace just “might” be a slight bit important
…or anyone who thinks opening holes for Ajayi just “might” be a slight bit important
…and not to be more of a negative nellie, but is anyone just a little bit concerned that the fins appear to be rapidly aging …not like a youth movement here, eh
…and considering our derth of draft picks, that’s not exactly a minor concern
…so far, the FO gets a C from me …hope they can up their game a bit more
…Stills is a C unless he becomes more than just a deep ball threat …Fasano is a D because he replaces a much younger Sims …Jones is a C unless he earns the top 5 money he got …Hayes is an unexpected B+ …Timmons is a B-, he fills a real need at a fair price but is not the future here …the tenders, if they hold, will help keep needed talent at good prices …Allen is a D, no way he replaces IAQ and Thomas already proved he can’t either
…all in all, a C so far …and without at least one starting guard out of FA, it will be a D at best
…fire away all you cheerleaders, I think your panties are so tight they’re interferring with the blood flow to your brains 😄
I think Lemmus that this off season is about getting lots of solid players, extending the contracts of those that need retaining, signing, short term contract with high guarantees, so the future isn’t mired, and getting more young guys in behind them. Now, that said: Miami must nail the draft. As far as the inside of the OL, it’s about Pouncey right now. If Miami get a talented LG in the draft and Pouncey stays healthy, Urbick or Larsen can fill in at RG. Problem arises if Pouncey goes down. If Miami gets two young G’s in the draft, then I’m fine… if they are actually any good. I would have picked up one sure fire G in FA, but Miami seems to be rolling the dice. If they blow it, then it gets ugly. If they roll 7’s then they are brilliant. But, so far this strategy of high guarantees and short term contracts brought back Stills, brought in Timmons… both of whom weren’t supposed to be here.
…well I like that there haven’t been any Suh/TH type contracts so far …everything except Jones has been a fair deal …Jones got paid like a top five S and if he earns it, ok …but so far, between injuries and inconsistency, he hasn’t …doesn’t mean I think they shouldn’t have extended him, just that they’re betting on the come and now that he’s got the money, I’m not going to be surprised if he reverts …nor will I be surprised if he earns every penny of it …its his inconsistency that hangs me up on giving him that much money
…IAQ’s loss means, imnsho, we’ll go for a young S in the draft …where, that’s the question
…there is a dearth of guards in this draft and many gurus say none are sure fire rookie starters …weigh that against the number of teams trying to imitate the Cowboy’s OL and what we’re seeing are Gs, who would have been 3/4 round picks the last 3 years, suddenly in the bottom half of the 1st this year …which is why waiting until the draft to find our guards scares the dickens out of me …I’d piss my shorts if Tannenbaum used a #1 on a G, especially one most think won’t start right away …bet TH and his knee brace feel the same way, eh
…please don’t tell me about the great OTs available to convert to guard …been there, done that, the success ratio is lower that betting on 7 in craps
…and you’re right about Pouncy needing a quality bu, which we don’t have on board or any prospects in FA or the draft
…as for TE, we now have a good receiving TE who is a lousy blocker and a very good blocking TE who has a career long case of the dropsies …pretty damn hard to fool defenses with that combo …so I’d expect they’ll take a TE if he can fill both roles, maybe even at 22 …there are 2 of them that could be available there
…so here we set needing another LB, 2 Gs, a TE, a S, a C, etc, etc …and we have 3 picks in the first 4 rounds where starters are usually found
…’scuse me but I’m desperately hoping a trade or a FA hit fills at least 2 of those holes, else we’re going to be praying for someone in our 2/3 year classes who hasn’t barked as yet to suddenly bite.
No need for a youth movement, as we were the second youngest team in the league last year. The “older” players being brought in are to protect ourselves in the draft and beyond. Another words; if the best player available at 22 or wherever we pick is not a player of immediate need they can still take him at this point. Players such as Hayes, Timmons, and Larsen may not be the youngest, but you can not beat their AVAILABILITY. They don’t miss games. How frustrating was it last year when 2 of our 3 starting LBers (Misi, Jenkins) continued to miss game after game after game??? I got your answer: VERY!!! These guys are lunch pal guys, the kind of guys Gase desires. You can win with workers, just ask the Billacheat. Everyone wants to “right” the ship, but when Miami finally doesn’t go after and get the “Big Cheese” in FA, there is a problem. Memo: no problem, just smart, methodical maneuvers/additions.
Hayes = One of the top DE edge setters in the league (true story). Don’t be surprised if he takes the starting roll from Branch. And to top it all off, the guy has MISSED 2 GAMES in the last 4 years,,, 2!!! And for what, a sixth round pick, brilliant.
Timmons = One of the more physical LBers in the league. Of any LBer position it is the “Mike” that seems to extend players careers beyond the dirty 30 mark. Same here. And to top it all off, the guy has MISSED 2 GAMES in the last 4 years,,, 2!!! Yes, I did copy and paste from the Hayes reference, but it is true!!! All the sudden we have 2 starting LBers that had over 120 tackles each,,,,,, no miss print, 120+ each last season, WOW!!! Now add a young stud w the 22nd pick, ULTRA, ULTRA upgrade at the second level.
Larsen = Though Larsen may have been a part time starter early on in his career, he may be playing his best football right now. He (Larsen) and Howard were inserted into the starting line-up the second half of the season, and guess who was the third leading rusher in the second half of the season; yep = Howard. Coincidence, maybe? But we do know this, Larsen has not been available for his team 3 games in the last 6 years, 3!!!
This team is better than it was last Monday. In fact, the defense is much better than it was last Monday, especially the joke of a LBer unit we had.
Keep up the good work fellas!!!
Like how Hayes ends up a one year deal. You need some exp and vets… can’t all be young. So far so good, but they must nail this draft. They must get 3 starters to really make strides. They need to do better than last year. If they get a good LG and a SLB who can rush and hold the point of attack, then I will be very, very excited. Add in a DE or DT that’s capable or a Starting S and a functional TE…either combo added to the previous would be sweeeettt.
