Draft Pundits predicting Waynes World, We say no
The two most infamous Draft gurus Mel Kiper Jr and Todd McShay are already in full swing with their predictions for the 2015 NFL draft. The Draft is a science and even though many people, including myself, try to predict what each team will do, it is extremely difficult to predict since there are so many moving parts and a lot of misdirection in the media by various teams. Kiper and McShay are both predicting at this moment that the Dolphins will select cornerback Trae Waynes from Michigan State.
Over the last 5 years, Kiper has failed to correctly predict the Dolphins’ first-round pick, whereas McShay has correctly predicted the Dolphins’ first-round pick in 2 out of the last 5 years (2011 Mike Pouncey, and 2012 Ryan Tannehill). Last year they both incorrectly predicted that the Dolphins would select OT Cyrus Kouandjio as the Phins’ first-round selection, and it was a good thing they were wrong because Ja’Wuan James started every game for Miami and played well, whereas Cyrus spent most of the season on the Bills inactive list.
Most of the pay per head reviews have Waynes rated as the top cornerback in the draft, so it is not a bad thing to be able to draft the top player at a particular position. Waynes finished last season with 3 interceptions, 10 passes defended, and 50 tackles. He is quick and physical and has demonstrated an ability to be a press-man corner. He is listed at 6’1” 182 pounds and a 40-yard time of around 4.43.
Personally I believe there are a bunch of viable cornerback options in the upcoming free-agency period that Miami could spend some coin on. The Dolphins have a few other positions of need like a linebacker, defensive lineman, wide receiver and guard that I would say would be a higher need than corner-back. Also drafting corner-backs is very tricky because it is an extremely tough position to play in the NFL, so the learning curve is a lot steeper and longer than other positions. Miami can not miss on their first pick, and this coaching staff has drafted 3 corner-backs (Taylor, Davis, and Aikens) so far, and none of which have proven to be starting material yet, so I would be reluctant to go corner so early in this draft. I would pass on Waynes even if he was still on the board at the 14th spot, what does the rest of Phins news fans think about drafting Waynes?

I would definitely take TWaynes at #14. Fins have to offset Brady and their passing attack if they have any chance in hell to get by them. Fins can find a wide body at DT in the 2nd round, draft is deep in DT, and they can find a G in FA i.e. Iupati from the 49ers, and draft OLmen later.
The only other position I would take at #14 is if one of the elite WR’s was there, but the Fins must find a playmaker on O (Wallace is not reliable), and a playmaker in the back 7 to compliment Brent Grimes.
I too would not draft Waynes @ 14, even though I believe he would be a safe pick. The only position besides DT I would take in the first round would be WR. I understand it is a deep WR class, but you are not going to get a true #1 in the second round. I mean #1 WRs have come from the second round but not from the start and only a handful of true #1 wideouts come beyond the first round.
Miami has a chance at #14 to pick one of the top 4 WRs and very good possibility one of the top 3 WRs will be there. I still believe a WR in the first round is the way to go (assuming one of the top 4 are available).
With young offensive cores’ in place and new stadium in ’16 (renovation) and the chance to land a true #1 WR, they have to jump, don’t look back, an exciting offense can be around the corner. A LBer can be had in the second or third, and a corner can come via free agency!!! Is it March 10th yet?
The article is correct in identifying our team needs
I agree that corner should be obtained in free agency
get a LB or DT in the first round
we have to improve our run defense
This appears to be a fairly deep draft for decent corners and receivers at least through the second round.
I would take a WR on the second round
this is predicated on us being able to get a Corner in free agency
third or fourth round a RB and maybe an additional LB
We have to let go Ellerby and wheeler they are no good and too expensive
Hartline is good but him and Gibson will be too expensive also therefore I think one or both might be released also and that is why no later than the second round we have to get a receiver
None of our players that we are going to cut that are not free agents have to be cut before June 1st so that our CAP hit is at a minimum.
I see at least 2 starters coming via free agency and whatever positions we get in free agency we will obviously not get with the first 2 picks because of our needs.
