The two most infamous Draft gurus Mel Kiper Jr and Todd McShay are already in full swing with their predictions for the 2015 NFL draft. The Draft is a science and even though many people, including myself, try to predict what each team will do, it is extremely difficult to predict since there are so many moving parts and a lot of misdirection in the media by various teams. Kiper and McShay are both predicting at this moment that the Dolphins will select cornerback Trae Waynes from Michigan State.
Over the last 5 years, Kiper has failed to correctly predict the Dolphins’ first-round pick, whereas McShay has correctly predicted the Dolphins’ first-round pick in 2 out of the last 5 years (2011 Mike Pouncey, and 2012 Ryan Tannehill). Last year they both incorrectly predicted that the Dolphins would select OT Cyrus Kouandjio as the Phins’ first-round selection, and it was a good thing they were wrong because Ja’Wuan James started every game for Miami and played well, whereas Cyrus spent most of the season on the Bills inactive list.
Most of the pay per head reviews have Waynes rated as the top cornerback in the draft, so it is not a bad thing to be able to draft the top player at a particular position. Waynes finished last season with 3 interceptions, 10 passes defended, and 50 tackles. He is quick and physical and has demonstrated an ability to be a press-man corner. He is listed at 6’1” 182 pounds and a 40-yard time of around 4.43.
Personally I believe there are a bunch of viable cornerback options in the upcoming free-agency period that Miami could spend some coin on. The Dolphins have a few other positions of need like a linebacker, defensive lineman, wide receiver and guard that I would say would be a higher need than corner-back. Also drafting corner-backs is very tricky because it is an extremely tough position to play in the NFL, so the learning curve is a lot steeper and longer than other positions. Miami can not miss on their first pick, and this coaching staff has drafted 3 corner-backs (Taylor, Davis, and Aikens) so far, and none of which have proven to be starting material yet, so I would be reluctant to go corner so early in this draft. I would pass on Waynes even if he was still on the board at the 14th spot, what does the rest of Phins news fans think about drafting Waynes?
