Drake Trade One of Many Storylines in Tonight’s Game

Drake sent to the Cards is one of the many interesting storylines in tonight’s game

The Steelers and Dolphins battle it out on Monday Night Football tonight with plenty of storylines attached to make this game between two losing teams at the very least interesting. The trade of Kenyan Drake to the Cardinals for a conditional sixth-round draft pick kicks them all off.

On a good note, the pick Miami acquired will bump up to a 5th rounder if Drake performs. Considering Drake was drafted in the 3rd Round of the 2016 Draft, Miami has lost value. But, as I said in October, something is better than nothing.

Dolphins have little, if any, interest in giving Drake a new contract. Considering all the CAP space they have next year and the increased pressure on Flores to win even a little, you can bet with the pay per head bookie services. that the Phins will sign at least some Free Agents this offseason. Even a middle-grade signing next year will cancel any compensatory draft picks they would get for him. So, Miami needs to make this trade happen.

Drake had too many questions surrounding his play to keep long term

Drake’s talent is worth more than even the potential fifth-round pick. But, he isn’t worth the swollen contract in his Free Agency… and more importantly the long term commitment that goes along with it. His lack of consistency in his reads on runs and pass blocking along with his fumbles and questions about his ability to handle a full load makes him a poor buy.

Maximizing the most good from a bad situation is the sign of a good Front Office. A year early is always better than a year late. Look no farther than Jarvis Landry. The Browns only sent the Dolphins a 2018 fourth-round pick and a 2019 seventh-round pick to the Phins for a Pro Bowl talent because Miami made the move a year late. If the former Front Office had pulled the trigger a year early they would have received a much better deal.

If Miami ends up getting a 5th for Drake, they would have near equaled the value for Landry. Considering the gross difference in talent between the two players’ talent and in the ‘similar ball-park’ compensation received, this FO is showing a much better decision making with maximizing a situation.

That’s a bit of a silver lining. No?

Speak of the Phins backfield…

Mark Walton will now get plenty of carries. Also, we might see Patrick Laird see some reps too. The two questions are: Can Walton handle the heavier load and was Laird ‘preseason magic’ legit or illusion? We’ll start to get answers on that tonight.

I do expect Kalen Ballage to see a nice bump in production… as long a Daniel Kilgore isn’t in the lineup. Evan Boehm makes a big difference in the inside run game due to his size and power. Tonight though will be a real test of this power running of the Phins. If it is, Kilgore might find himself in a backup role… if this staff isn’t sentimental.

Draft pick status is on the line big time tonight in ‘Minkah’s revenge game’

Miami has the Steelers’ top pick next year in the trade of their former ‘cornerstone’ player, Minkah Fitzpatrick. So the Phins are in a sticky place as far as their draft pick value… whatever the outcome. A win will raise the value of the Steelers pick but will lower the value of theirs. Considering their pick is destined to be Top 5 and possibly the #1 overall, those seeing this game as getting the first choice in the 2020 Draft, a Phins loss is a win.

But, a win by the Phins will help their chances of getting two picks in the Top 10. Right now the Steelers have the 10th best record. A Steeler win tonight will move that pick into the teens. Miami is very near to losing value in the trade.

The easy answer is ‘getting the top pick next year is all that matters’. Is it the best result in truth? Would having a Top 5 pick and a Top 10 pick end up the better value than the 1st Overall and something in the mid/ late teens? The Texans’ pick looks to end up as something in the tail end of the first-round.

With the Tua injury, Burrows rising, Young a very rare talent, and Hurts in the wings as a possible consolation prize, it does raise some question as to what is best. Not a ton… but some.

Well, this season is ugly, but it sure is interesting and full of events.
