Examining the 2022 ‘Terron Effect’ on the Oline
The numbers show how much Terron helped Miami in 2022
The Miami Dolphins’ addition of Terron Armstead was the biggest addition last season as the numbers clearly prove. Yes, Terron had a host of injuries last year, but he played like a Top 15 tackle despite them. Also, the boost he gave to the offensive line in protecting the quarterback was nothing short of superhuman. Last season the numbers are eye-popping and offer a ton of hope and concern for this season. If Terron can stay healthy, Miami will have a Top 5 tackle who blocks alone to send help down the line to give Tua plenty of protection. But, if Terron isn’t there, things could get very dicey when you realize the ‘Terron effect’ of 2022.
Tua & Hill & Terron are the critical pieces on the offense
Below is my handy-dandy, but less-than-elite graphic design showing as goes Terron, so goes Miami’s protection.
The week-by-week examination shows a massive jump in pressure when Terron is highly injured or not playing. Terron PRs (pressures allowed) are side-by-side with Team Total Pressures Allowed. The black outlines indicate abbreviated games or scratches for Terron. The purple outlines indicated high levels of pressure on Miami quarterbacks. The green shows Terron’s worst game.
Now some context:
- Week 1 against the Patriots who were 7th in the league in pressure % and they blitzed 15 of 33 pass plays. Greg Little in relief of Jackson gave up 3 pressures
- Week 4 against the Bengals had Tua go down, they were a quality blitzing team ranked 13th in pressure % and Greg Little gave up 5 pressures.
- The Wildcard game against the Bills had Terron, but he had a bad toe, injured groin, and torn Pec, but only gave up 1 pressure, while Cotton Jr at left Guard gave up 4 pressures.
Other than the above ‘rabbit ears’ Terron’s absence invariably followed a complete breakdown in protection. Now, there are many other factors, but it’s an easy bet with the best pay-per-head that the presence of Terron in the lineup was one of the most critical.
So, with a very tough schedule this season and Tua coming off serious head trauma last season, Terron Armstead is as critical a piece needed for success as it gets. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that Terron can stay healthy because the offensive line makes the NFL world go around and he is without a doubt the heart and soul of the Dolphins’ O-line! Go Phins!!!
