Film Study: Every Ryan Tannehill Pass Play V.S. Pats
Ryan Tannehill had his best game of the year v.s. the Patriots
It appears Ryan Tannehill is back in the good graces with Dolphins fans after a huge victory against the Patriots.
But the ‘see I told you’ and ‘one win proves nothing’ debate rages on.
Did last week do anything to change either side’s perception?
Phinsnews has put together a film study of every drop back from the Pats game for a deeper evaluation than just a QBR, Passer Rating, and box scores analysis.
While the Dolphins were very fortunate this week, Phinsnews has hit a snag and maxed their data storage… again. It seems my uploads for film studies directly to the site sucks up a huge amount of space.
Jimmy has used his ‘boss veto power’ to force me to use YouTube instead of direct uploads going forward.
So, this will be the new format for film reviews that use video… with some refinements of course.
How do you rate Tannehill’s performance after going over every pass play with a fine-toothed comb?
It’s time for both sides to come to a middle ground on Ryan Tannehill.
No, Tannehill’s failures are not all about the O-line, skills, and play calls. The reality is, Tannehill is not elite and never will be.
This isn’t a knock on him or his supporters. Very, very few QBs ever attain elite status. Yet, there is also a very sobering reality to his detractors: many, many more QBs never reach Tannehill’s level. You can bet with the pay per head bookie sites like www.AcePerHead.com that the situation could be far worse.
Tannehill is the best QB option since Griese and Marino. Chad Pennigton with a good arm would change this and made Tannehill 4th. But Pennigton was a shell of himself when he came here.
Miami can win and win pretty big with Tannehill… when he is a piece of the puzzle–not the whole show.
A fair assessment of Tannehill that the tape has proven time and time again
Strengths:
- Tannehill is athletic, mobile, tough, and a threat on the ground.
- He has exceptional arm strength and accuracy and anticipation with receivers and space both deep and medium depths.
- Able to throw to all levels on the run.
- Intense commitment and work ethic commensurate of a starting QB.
Weaknesses:
- Poor pocket awareness.
- Slow going through progressions and locks on receivers.
- Poor route anticipation and rarely throws receivers open.
- Hit and miss ball security.
Tannehill should return in 2019… if Gase is back, which is very likely at this point. BUT, Miami must look for better options and competition for the spot. No, they shouldn’t sell the farm for a chance at a good QB. Too often the farm ends up swampland in the Everglades. Still, the #1 priority must be to get the right one and not settle on decent. The Dolphins need this QB search to be a yearly pursuit… until they find one that’s elite. Go Phins!!!
