2017 NFL Free Agency Begins At 2pm Tuesday
Free Agency will be key in Miami having a successful 2017
The 2017 NFL Free Agency officially kicks off on Tuesday March 7th at 12pm, which is when teams can begin speaking with free agents from other teams. But, they will need to wait until Thursday to make any official signing.
In years past, Miami has been very active in this first week. Even though most NFL odds aren’t high on Miami being big spenders this year, they will definitely still be an active participant in the free agent market.
All of the biggest names–and most of the better players–will get scooped up very quickly, which makes the first week the most important. After that, there are plenty of players still available, but definitely not the most sought after names. However, some of the best bargains and diamonds in the rough can be signed after the first week.
Free Agency is about getting the most bang for your buck
For the first few days of free agency Miami needs to focus on getting a starting Linebacker and Guard. For me, those are the two biggest areas of need, where we legitimately need two starters at each of those positions. So even though we can fill those positions through the draft, it would be wise to get at least one starting caliber Guard and LB now.
The problem with Miami saying they do not want to be big spenders is that they may try to get players like Turner and Thomas to fill the Guard positions, and linebackers like Misi, and Jenkins. These players went through years of trying to groom, and trying to groom… and never panned out. So as much as bargain basement shopping sounds intriguing, the fact is that you have to remember that you get what you pay for–most of the time.
Only the very top tier of staff and F.O. can find, groom, and coach up. Is that what Miami has? I hope so, but only time will tell. Good signs are there to say maybe they do. Starting tomorrow, we’ll begin to find out if it’s true or not. Go Fins!!!

Lemmus we do need 2 starting guards. In order to get 2 that consistently dominate opponents in both run and pass blocking, and successful experience in a zone blocking scheme we would have to get the top 2, and that would be some serious coin. I am looking for 2 young guards that are in the middle of the road players that have a good medical history. 2 players such as Larry Warford and Austin Pasztor are middle tier guys that would come at a decent price. Warford is 25 years old and has missed 4 games in 4 years and should require a contract in the 6.2 million/season (per sportrac), and Pasztor is 26 years old and has been healthy throughout and should require a 4 yrs, $21,039,603 @ 5.2 million/season (per sportrac). I feel comfortable getting these 2 because of price, age, and health and most importantly our coaching staff will get the best out of each. Unlike our previous staffs.
We do need 2 starting LBers, and I see us getting 1 via free agency and 1 via draft. To get a starting LBer via draft it will require the first round pick. I see this pick being Haason Reddick. This kid can play both inside and out, thus giving Miami more options with the other LBers. Temple has been sending several successful players to the NFL lately and this kid is going one of the more successful players. So if Miami gets a “Sam” player via free agency, Reddick can play “Mike” and Kiko can slide out to the “Will”. If Miami gets a “Mike” via free agency, Reddick can play the “Sam”. He seems like a perfect fit. He can tackle, rush and most importantly plays well in space (he can cover).
Exciting times, free agency is a few days away. Legal tampering is a few hours away. I don’t see Miami breaking the bank for a player such as Suh. I do see them filling out this roster with middle of the road players that this staff will get the most out of and improve this team overall this season. Thus, allowing us to take the best player available come the draft.
IMO; Branch gets re-signed, yet they take a DE in the second or third round, and taking a safety (hopefully Obi Melifonwu, UConn) with either the second or third round.
Sleeper LBer for the Fins would be Jordan Willis of K State. Projected to go in the 3-4 round range. He would be a steal in the third for us, I just don’t see him being there in the third, but hey you never know. Dream scenario would have us drafting both Reddick and Willis.
…welcome back JB
…yes, we need 2 starting OGs …but more than that, each must have a history of consistently dominating opponents in both run and pass blocking, and successful experience in a zone blocking scheme
…and yes, 2 starting LBs …preferably one ILB and one MLB (allowing Alonzo to move outside), and each with a history of consistently dominating in a 4-3 defense
…anything less and we’ll have paid too much for too little (regardless of the price) and not fully addressed our MUST position needs …imnsho
…and no, I don’t expect the FO to deliver Xmas in March …but I do want to set a higher standard than just “starting caliber” …this time last year, Gase claimed the turnstile twins were starting caliber OGs …I’m hoping he sets the bar a bit higher starting tomorrow, eh
…love to head for the draft legitimately able to draft the BPA in each round
…and yes, I’m taking my meds 🙂
