Big names in Free Agency don’t always mean good buys
Free Agency will be key in Miami having a successful 2017
The 2017 NFL Free Agency officially kicks off on Tuesday March 7th at 12pm, which is when teams can begin speaking with free agents from other teams. But, they will need to wait until Thursday to make any official signing.
In years past, Miami has been very active in this first week. Even though most NFL odds aren’t high on Miami being big spenders this year, they will definitely still be an active participant in the free agent market.
All of the biggest names–and most of the better players–will get scooped up very quickly, which makes the first week the most important. After that, there are plenty of players still available, but definitely not the most sought after names. However, some of the best bargains and diamonds in the rough can be signed after the first week.
Free Agency is about getting the most bang for your buck
For the first few days of free agency Miami needs to focus on getting a starting Linebacker and Guard. For me, those are the two biggest areas of need, where we legitimately need two starters at each of those positions. So even though we can fill those positions through the draft, it would be wise to get at least one starting caliber Guard and LB now.
The problem with Miami saying they do not want to be big spenders is that they may try to get players like Turner and Thomas to fill the Guard positions, and linebackers like Misi, and Jenkins. These players went through years of trying to groom, and trying to groom… and never panned out. So as much as bargain basement shopping sounds intriguing, the fact is that you have to remember that you get what you pay for–most of the time.
Only the very top tier of staff and F.O. can find, groom, and coach up. Is that what Miami has? I hope so, but only time will tell. Good signs are there to say maybe they do. Starting tomorrow, we’ll begin to find out if it’s true or not. Go Fins!!!
