Future Rests On Chris Grier’s Decisions

The near invisible man Chris Grier will call the shots
The near-invisible man Chris Grier will call the shots.

The former head of college scouting, Grier IS the GM, not Tannenbaum

A popular opinion among Fin Fans is that Mike Tannenbaum is the GM and Chris Grier is just a figurehead. By all appearances, this notion isn’t the case. Unless there is some Machiavellian conspiracy, Grier is the man in charge, and he will make the final decision over who Miami picks in this draft.

This isn’t to say he doesn’t consult and consider others, but the buck stops at his doorstep. So today’s draft will be made or broken based on his choices.

Grier will need to do better than last year.

I don’t know about you, but given his impact on my beloved team, I haven’t really considered him all that much. In my mind, Tannenbaum and Gase were the main players determining the Dolphins fortunes, but truth is, this power structure is a trifecta… and today is Grier’s moment in the sun–or our moment in hell.

The evaluation of Chris Grier’s first draft is still up in the air

After doing some research, some interesting things stood out:

As per ESPN, “Grier comes from a scouting family: Scouting is in Chris Grier’s blood. His father, Bobby, is the director of pro scouting with the Houston Texans. Bobby also worked with coach Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots during their first Super Bowl run. Also, Chris Grier’s brother, Michael, is a hockey scout with the Chicago Blackhawks. He is a former player for the Edmonton Oilers, Washington Capitals, Buffalo Sabres, and San Jose Sharks. Both Bobby and Michael got championship rings in New England and Chicago, respectively, leaving Chris Grier as the only one among the trio without a title. “[Michael] got a ring last year when they won, so I was pissed,” he said. “I’m hoping to get one down here soon.”

We hope so too.

Now, just because he comes from good scouting lineage doesn’t mean the apple can’t fall far from the tree, because it can. But it doesn’t hurt to have good roots either. On an interesting note, Bobby Grier is now a consultant for the Phins and working under his son.

Really, the only solid evidence we have to predict today’s outcome is the 2016 draft. The hallmark of that draft was luck, luck that Laremy Tunsil fell to number 13. If it wasn’t for that freak fall of talent, the rest of the draft would be considered unspectacular… at least as far as 2016 is concerned. It’s not to say Howard, Carro, Drake, and Grant won’t take a step forward and change to the image of the draft. They very well might. But let’s be realistic, it didn’t take an NFL football genius to make the Tunsil pick with the best pay per head reviews.

So, here we are in 2017. This a crucial moment in this franchise history. Could they screw up the draft and still make something out of this regime? Yes. But it would be a lot harder to turn this ship around.

What Grier does with his fifth-round picks will be crucial

Grier needs to find 4-5 contributors in this draft and post-draft Free Agency. Of those players at 2-3 need to be starters. If he pulls off this kind of draft, he would net a B+ to A+ draft. and the Dolphins would be in prime position to make noise this year.

On a more sober vein, I think a B draft grade with 2 starters and 1 contributor would be the absolute bare minimum for success this year–and that might be stretching hope a bit too much. Miami would be very thin with a B grade, and the lack of depth would come back to haunt them. Anything less than a B would put a great deal of pressure on Miami’s chances of success in for this season… and maybe beyond.

Without exceptional ammunition and position, Grier must maximize every pick. He must find instant contributors and depth as well. Honestly, getting a B+ or better grade in 2017 is a tall order, but it’s an order that must be made.

Last year, Tunsil started, and Howard started half the year. Drake and Grants made high-impact contributions, but overall it was limited, and Carroo added a drop or two. Given the expectations this year, the higher level of competition, and many holes, this type of draft would fall short.

But if Grier does pull off a great grade, and you add a fine deal maker in Tannenbaum, and an excellent Head Coach in Gase, Miami Dolphins will be poised for greatness. Today is a big day Fin Fans. Get your popcorn ready. Go Fins!!!
