Gase Very Happy With ‘O’ Roster… PFF & Phinsnews Agree

Gase knows nothing is guaranteed…but some things do look better than others

Gase finally has a roster that he’s comfortable with come game time

Adam Gase sees this as the best roster he’s had in his time as the Miami Dolphins Head Coach. Gase stated recently that he’s more comfortable with this 2018 roster than any previous incarnation. Many disagree, but Phinsnews and PFF think Gase is right.

To be truthful, this group assembled sure does seem better equipped to play his scheme and philosophy than either of the previous two seasons. Gase loves three-down backs and two Tight End sets… and everyone loves an O-Line that can both run and pass block. It’s been a while since the Dolphins could boast having all three at once.

With excuses gone, Gase will sink or swim on merit alone

I’m glad Gase is happy with the talent he has to work with. If he’s really a franchise coach, then this ship should turn around with the right personnel. And if it doesn’t, he isn’t, and then…

Whatever level you gauge it, Tannehill was playing his best football in Gase’s first season. Tannehill was ranked 21st while missing several games and surrounded by mostly poor talent in 2016. You might say a 21st sucks, but keep in mind, Flacco and Rivers were ranked 20th and 19th respectively. Phinsnews expects that if the talent level on offense has truly risen that Tannehill will fall into the 15-10th rank by season’s end. PFF are believers as well. You can check out the article here.

Gase has a vision for his football team. Some previous players were said to ‘not remember all the details and run each play the way he drew it up’. They were sent packing because ‘they didn’t match the vision’. These new additions along with the holdovers are expected to run the ‘O’ right for the first time.

Soon enough we’ll get to see what is what. Maybe the pay per head reviews like AcePerHead.com will be eating their words after all.

At the very least, with some actual non-zombified Tight Ends and an Offensive Line not made of ‘Finlandia’, Gase will have the tools now to accomplish what he came here to do.

Josh Sitton at Left Guard, Wideout Danny Amendola, Mike Gesicki and Durham Smythe at Tight End are massive additions.

Sitton is a sure fire ‘blocks alone’ LG who will free up the Center on passing downs. His ‘hold and shield’ at the point of attack on Outside Zone run play will be tremendous. He’s no slouch on inside zone runs, either. His ability to double-team and move to the next level is still very good. Sitton, Kilgore, and Davis are a legit force on interior runs. Sitton’s only red flag is injury nicks and missing a game here and there.

Gase needs a certain amount of talent to win… just like any coach

Amendola’s injury red flag is similar to Sitton. But he too has strong positives. Amendola’s nuanced understanding of routes, his work ethic, and experience are tops among Dolphins receivers. He’ll be a true teacher for the young receivers and a real security blanket for Tannehill. Amendola will be exactly where he’s supposed to be, snap after snap.

Cameron, Thomas, and Fasano were on their last legs and never real threats. Gesicki and Smythe bring youth and crucial skillsets that were sorely lacking. At the very least, they will be an upgrade over 2016 and 2017. At best they could be true game changers.

The pressure that Gesicki will put on the seam will radically change the way defenses play the offense. This pressure will open a ton of routes that had been chocked off in 2016 and 2017. If he can even become an adequate blocker and get off of the press, look out!!

Smythe will bring potent inline blocking and the ability to be an H-back. A quality H-Back will provide big challenges by allowing more diversity of looks… as well as increased toughness. Also, when Smythe is motioned in and out of the backfield it will complicate the defensive assignments and help the ‘O’ retain the initiative. The challenge he presents to defenses will be vastly increased if he proves to be a receiver as well.

In combination, they could be a devastating duo.

No excuse will cut it now… win or get out

Going into year three, Gase and company have little room for error. He better be happy with what he has. Gase has but a single season to prove his worth to the future of the organization. Barring any major changes to this current roster, this is the team he’s working with this upcoming season.

Most predictions out there have the Dolphins as a below .500 team this year. Gase will have to shock the world one more time to prove he’s legit… and be back in 2019. The worm is turning a bit, though. Phinsnews has liked the look of things for a while, but we are small fries. The ‘big times’ like PFF are getting on board now, so maybe we are onto something?
