Gauging the 2020 Phins Camp Reports
What’s the picture that reports are painting of the 2020 Phins?
Phins fans are split on expectations for the 2020 Season: some believe it can be a special year, some see it as another step in the rebuilding process. Most fans though see the Miami Dolphins heading in a positive direction. But, one thing that unifies all fans is we are in ‘the dark’ because we won’t have even a glimpse of this team firsthand until Week 1 of the Regular Season. Until then, fans must rely on the insights of the beat reporters more than ever.
Now, watching preseason games and live practices offer a first-hand account of the situation. This is always better than being told what happens. But it’s all guesswork when trying to predict what type of team will come out of the preseason and show up Opening Day. Still, part of the fun is trying to figure out what’s coming before it actually does.
Given how crazy this NFL season has gone so far, anything is possible. The 2020 Dolphins could post another losing season or make the playoffs. I really wouldn’t be surprised by either outcome at this point. — Pay Per Head Bookie – How to Take Action on a Sports Betting Website.
What Phins fans can count on this season
- At least for this year, QB Ryan Fitzpatrick is the clearly best quarterback on the roster. Will his arm last though? Reports of a tired arm came out from some beat reporters late last season. My reply is Fitzpatrick won some very big games on that ‘tired arm’ in 2019.
- Receivers DeVante Parker and Preston Williams are quality receivers with the potential for greatness. Big, fast, and can high point the ball. They, along with Geiscki are excellent at going up and getting the football… and Fitzmagic is all about that. A marriage made in heaven?
- CB Byron Jones was paid big and he’s continued his excellent play into camp. At least one receiver is sure to be covered.
- At least the very least the defense will have a deep secondary to add to Jones. Noah Igbinoghene is having an excellent camp for a rookie, Bobby McCain looks much improved at safety, Eric Rowe and Nik Needham along with rookie Brandon Jones is quite a solid group. And that’s not adding in Xavien Howard… when he gets healthy. Overall, mediocre seems the baseline with the potential for much more.
- Middle Linebacker will finally have star talent. Kyle Van Noy will continue to be stellar… that is if today’s injury was just a nick. have that kind of presence in the middle of the defense will make a world of difference.
Miami looks to be strong in the passing game
By all accounts, the passing game, both on offense and in pass defense, is where fans can hang there hat for sure. The good news from this camp is that very little bad news about the O-line is finding its way into the reports. I was surprised to hear how Solomon Kindley has taken to starting the Right Guard spot over Robert Hunt, who has been very quiet but did replace a struggling Jesse Davis at Right Tackle. It’s hard to sift through all of this from reports. Was the short demotion to Davis simply motivational or is the veteran heading for a demotion?
Some very great news for the O-line is that several different reporters have said that Austin Jackson is quietly having a very good camp!
Injuries are gaining steam
- OLB Vince Biegel went down for the season with an Achilles injury
- Xavien Howard is just coming off the COVID-19 list. Miami will take it slow with him and it’s likely he’ll miss the opener.
- Curtis Weaver was injured and waived! Hopefully, he comes back to us on I.R. That hurts!! Jerome Baker returned today after missing a few practices with an injury. FA safety Kavon Frazier also missed today.
- Today, Kyle Van Noy, Patrick Laird, and rookie Noah Igbinoghene had their practice cut short due to injury.
Miami needs all of these players back ASAP. Still shocked about Weaver! The loss of Biegel and Weaver is a blow.
Good & bad stories coming out of camp
- Noah Igbinoghene has been excellent and even managed to beat speedster Jakeem Grant to the ball on a deep pass.
- Speaking of Grant, he has continued his inconsistency.
- Rookie DT Raekwon Davis has been a beast and could be a steal if he can put it all together.
- On the flip side, Raekwon McMillan has been buried on the depth chart. The rise of Elandon Roberts, who has had tons of accolades this camp, spells trouble for one of the vets Baker or Sam Eguavoen.
- Tua is a rookie with some down moments… just a rookie being a rookie. But Tua showed off his talent today with 3 T.D.s. Stay excited fans! The only thing you should worry about with Tua is his health. Other than that it’s a lock for him to do well.
- Isaiah Ford is taking the bull by the horns nearly every practice he’s given a good report.
- Myles Gaskin is entering the conversation with Brieda and Jones now. Even if he offers an excellent third option that’s a very good thing.
- Kalen Ballage is doing the exact opposite. There’s time left for him to turn the corner… but, Miami might not keep 5 RBs. Laird plays special teams… well.
- QB/ RB/ WR Malcolm Perry doesn’t have good hands… at least at this point.
Rounding out recent Phins news…
Miami resigned OLB Trent Harris and added stand out CFL stand LB Nate Holley yesterday.
Flores said something very interesting about Holley, “He’s fast. He’s tough. As far as positions, right now we’re going to get him out there in a safety role. Safety, special teams. He’s played some linebacker.”
I’d bet the farm with the pay per head review sites that Brian Flores has a niche role carved out for the big safety Kavon Frazier. Maybe Holley is Plan B?
Well, with just under 3 weeks before Opening Day, there’s plenty of time left for things to develop. It’ll be interesting! Go Phins!!!
