Phins are poised to return relevancy! Maybe even prominence?
The NFL Draft is tomorrow! And every NFL fan knows that the Miami Dolphins are in a unique position with 14 total draft picks and an unbelievable six in the top 70 picks of the 2020 Draft. After an excellent Free Agency, if Chris Grier can nail his selections, the Phins could be poised for a return to relevancy… and maybe even prominence.
By all indication, the Dolphins have found their Head Coach for the foreseeable future in Brian Flores. It took just about a quarter of a century and half a dozen coaches since Don Shula to find him. It’s not that Flores is the next Shula, but it certainly seems to be the best thing since…
…But, even the best coaches need a heap of talent to win.
So, the next step is injecting the team with plenty of young players as a foundation of talent. This draft will give Miami every possible chance to make this happen.
Can the Phins really pull this off like an elite franchise?!
The decision-makers must execute this second phase of the rebuilding plan like aces or having the ‘right coach’ won’t amount to a hill of beans. All the picks in the world aren’t worth diddly if you come away with junk. The Phins must find a few day-one starters with some potential Pro Bowl players among them. And if they get lucky, maybe even a potential Hall of Fame player.
This is a very loaded draft according to the best bookie software and draft gurus. Miami must take full advantage of this opportunity because just an ‘okay’ grade won’t be good enough.
Like most Miami Dolphin News fans, I hope Miami doesn’t trade up. There are rumors today that Miami is looking to move up to the 3rd Pick for an Offensive Tackle. I sure hope that’s not what happens! I’d much rather use those 3 priceless top picks on 3 players.
There is also talk that Miami may be looking to trade up from #18. If this is true, the one good thing is that it means giving up fewer draft assets to move up from #18, compared to moving from the #5 to #3. But again, I’d rather Miami make 3 selections.
Putting the Dolphins potential in perspective
Think about it, usually, a team only gets a single first-round pick to lay their future hopes on. Miami has five picks in the next two years!’
Obviously, from Phins fans many past experiences, 1st Round picks don’t always work out. Sadly, in South Florida, first-round picks have been more bust than not over the last 20 years. Look no farther than these two Dolphins 1st Round picks: Dion Jordan and Charles Harris. Both are poster boys of ‘epic disappointment’ for a franchise starving to just be relevant.
Miami now has three unique opportunities to feed the Phins team and the hopes of their fan base. The odds are in our favor that we hit on at least one of them because three busts would be mathematically crazy. But anything is possible… and maybe it goes the other way? Imagine if the Phins nail all three of their top picks!
Will hope turn into reality?
We must be realistic, Miami won’t hit on all their picks. But, in a numbers game, the more picks you make then the higher chance you have of finding good players. I would go bonkers over picking seven starters from this draft. A 50% hit ratio would be an amazing draft and reminiscent of those early Seahawk drafts. It’s doable…
… but a more reasonable goal would be five starters, which would still be a huge success.
So, the only thing left to do is to wait and continue to have faith in Flores and Grier that they can come away from this Draft with some very good football players.
The hard part is if they totally strike out on this draft that will probably mean the end of Flores and Grier. BUT, I believe it won’t go that way… and by the end of tomorrow, our long, long-suffering will start to come to a close!
What are the rest of the Miami Dolphins News fans’ thoughts about how successful we can be in this upcoming draft?
