Head-Scratching Van Noy Release
Van Noy release came out of left field
Kyle Van Noy was a huge Free Agent signing in 2020… and now in 2021, he has been told that he’ll be released. While at times inconsistent, his impact play and leadership were clear. The defense was the backbone of the Phins last year and Van Noy’s 6 sacks, 6 passes defended and 42 tackles certainly played a part in that. But, despite what Van Noy brought to the table last season, his signing has to be regarded as a failure at some level. Either Chris Grier and Brian Flores were wrong to sign to spend 20$ million for a single season of work or will regret letting Van Noy go. I’d much prefer the latter than the former… only time will tell, though.
What are some possible reasons for the release?
I get Van Ginkel outplayed Van Noy and that cutting Van Noy now makes the financial hit more palatable…
…. But this continuous trend of heavy turnover in staff and personnel makes me cringe a bit with concern. While it’s one thing to purge what is handed down from a prior regime, it’s a whole other animal when you are cutting free early of so many of your own moves. I do like how they aren’t afraid to make the moves they see as best, though.
But, was the Van Noy signing always viewed as most likely ending after the first season?
Alan wrote this: “The contract always made Van Noy susceptible to being released after one year, and the question always was going to be whether the team felt he provided enough to justify continuing to carry his big cap number.”
Even if this was the understanding from the Front Office, was the move worth it? Could there be other reasons for the move?
Spitballing possible motives for the release
- Maybe Grier and Flores always saw a one-and-done as the most likely scenario?
- Could be that they just wanted Van Noy for a season to help develop the young players–especially Van Ginkel– and a roll of the dice for an epic performance to justify the 2nd season?
- Did drafting Tua, post the Van Noy signing, change the timetable for a championship run and extend the youth movement?
- Are they intending to spend a high draft pick on an edge player?
- Are they intending to spend big on Free Agency or a trade?
- Did they feel his body hit the wall and injuries might be an even larger factor in his performance in coming years?
- Could Van Noy have been one of the defensive players who spoke out that they didn’t believe in Tua?

Van Noy did have a sorta’ down season
I wrote that Van Noy was inconsistent and his PFF Grade of 61.8 was his lowest in three seasons, but he still ranked 26th of all edge defenders even though he was fighting through injuries. I never, ever expected… or wanted this outcome!
Until proven otherwise, Flores knows best, though.
The loss of Ryan Fitzpatrick and Van Noy now leaves a big void of veteran leadership going into this season. Add to this the addition of a whole host of new players and coaches, it will be a huge feather in the cap of Brian Flores if he can maintain consistency.
So, Year 3 of this regime will be very interesting for many reasons… this just adds one more. 2021 will be another season full of the unexpected…
… The good news is that so far though, most of those unexpected turns have been good ones. Given the history, I expect this trend to continue. Go Phins!!!

From a money standpoint… yes, it was a good move. But, Van Noy was a leader and did provide impact play and depth. I liked him being there… of course, as you said they could go younger with a rookie or a FA like Milano. Jimmy’s idea of Simmons didn’t age well with the franchise tag getting placed on him again. My fault a bit as he gave me the article a few days earlier, but I was jammed up. I’m sure I’ll get a ‘come on man’ for that 🙂 Never thought of Smith… but, I like that. They say Fitz is going to retire. Man, he must be bitter over the Phins thing not to even come in as a backup… I’m still very concerned with Tua… and all this talk about Watson has to be coming from somewhere, which mean this staff isn’t super high on Tua. Now, Watson is a star, so it’s not off the wall… but, if Tua was elite, they wouldn’t even sniff somewhere else. Who knows though… maybe it’s all talk… still, Tua has had more ugly surrounding after one year than most top 5 QBs. I’m hoping it’s all false negativity and not rooted in anything. McCain is solid and secure… but small for a FS. He is very expensive. Didn’t realize how much till it dotted the is and crossed the ts on Jimmy’s article. Don’t like that.
