This Tunsil mega-trade brings the promise of great reward… or regret
Just when you thought it would be a smooth ride into the Regular Season given Jadeveon Clowney is in Seattle, the Tunsil trade plotline reemerged in the biggest Phins trade since Ricky Williams.
This time though we are on the receiving side of the picks.
Wow!
Kenny Stills, Laremy Tunsil, a 4th Round pick in 2020, and a 6th rounder in 2021 are heading to the Texans for a 2020 and 2021 1st Round pick, a 2021 2nd Round pick, CB Johnson Bademosi, and OT Julie’n Davenport.
Two things are absolutely clear:
We are stocked with blue-chip, draft picks for the next two years…
… And the Phins 2019 Offensive Line could end up being compared to the disastrous Phins 2017 Offensive Line like a crack whore next to Ms. Universe…
… That’s a doubly scary picture…
… unless this Front Office and staff are oozing with brilliance.
Is another trade for a Left Tackle on the horizon? The situation doesn’t bode well for the present, but the future couldn’t be much brighter.
Regarding Tunsil and Stills…
The loss of Tunsil on this O-line can’t be underestimated. He was by far the most talented player on the most crucial unit in the game. But, as we said in our Clowney/ Tunsil trade article, “He is a very good pass blocker… not so much at run blocking where he is average. His PFF grade of 79.5 is slightly diminished by his RB grade of 62.3, especially for a team that favors running the ball.”
This along with the ton of nicks he’s had meant Tunsil was very valuable, but not irreplaceable.
Three blue-chip picks are plenty of ammo for even a competent Front Office to turn this trade into a big win.
Of course, this is all dependent on what Grier does with the ammo.
What can be said about Stills? No much. Talented, but he challenged the owner and the leadership of the Head Coach. The writing on the wall was etched by Stills with a chisel.
Say what you want, this regime keeps you on your toes
We wrote back when Grier made the trade of Rosen, Tannehill, and Quinn that the new GM ‘wheels and deal’ brilliantly. This is a Hershel Walker (light) type deal. Grier won on raw value. Even if you think the Phins will screw it up, you can’t deny that all these picks bring promise.
It is clear now that Grier has fully embraced the 2019 mulligan. Phinsnews believes Grier has been masterful.
The most immediate question now is, how much can the staff coach this squad up to prevent them from being a laughing stock? Miami must keep the ‘spirit of the tank’ from the lockerroom. And then there was this talk of revolt should Tunsil be traded.
That’s okay there are plenty of picks to replace the rebels.
My hope has been that Flores gets at least six wins in 2019 to prove the pay per head services like www.AcePerHead.com wrong. This would be enough to show me Flores can coach players up. Now though, given massive a loss Tunsil is, 6 wins will prove himself an excellent Head Coach.
Grier has done all that could be done… and more
Back in January, when Chris Grier was hired, many were saying he deserved patience. I vehemently rejected this stance. Instead, I wrote that ‘football is all about earning, nothing is deserved… except for a fair evaluation and patience through the process’.
We still need to see what he does going forward, but so far, Grier has earned an increased measure of my patience.
Also, beyond these picks, by next year the malignancy of Mike Tannenbaum will be all but expunged. Think about all that Grier has done to untangle the ugly past.
