In Rosen Trade, Grier Wheels & Deals Brilliantly

Chris Grier is wheeling & dealing and proving Steven Ross right

As rumors circled the news of the trade interest from Chris Grier for Cardinals QB Josh Rosen, I was… ah, less than excited. My thoughts were ‘Miami needs help and a 2nd Round Pick is far too valuable to use on a fragile jerk’.

Who wants that as the face of your franchise… even if he pans out?

Drafting Finley or Grier… or even Lock left a better taste in my mouth.

But, two things crept out of the dark that made me rethink my stance. One became obvious when the trade details were finalized… the second took a little longer.

Chris Grier is proving himself to be one helluva’ GM

Initially, the Cards wanted a 1st Round Pick for those interested in Rosen. No one bit. Then as Draft Day neared, the asking price fell to a 2nd. Still no takers.

No one wanted this kid.

Draft day came, and the rumors grew that Miami was interested in parting with their 2nd for Rosen… but the sticking point was Grier wanted a 4th in return. The Cards balked at Grier’s hardball.

With the ton Offensive Tackle talent left on the board at the beginning of Round 2, I prayed to the football gods for no deal…

… Just don’t let there be run on Linemen.

Given the Dolphins ‘luck’, there was a huge run on OTs, of course. Even G Elgton Jenkins was snatched up just a few spots in front of Miami. The Phins were stranded at the 48th pick.

The football gods were using my beloved team as a urinal–again… or so I thought.

Chris Grier turned defeat into victory by trading with the Saints. The trade back to #62 garnered Miami a 2020 2nd Rounder and 2019 5th Rounder for #48 and a 4th Round pick this year in return. No Rosen and an extra 2nd—winning!

With all the Offensive Line players off the board that fit proper valuation of the 2nd Round… this was THE right move. Other Dolphins regimes, as they wet their pants crying over spilled milk, would have grabbed an ‘Eddie Moore’ type of reach. Not Grier.

Then the trade came, and the Rosen deal cost Miami #62 and a 5th this year. But, the reality is when you factor in what they received from the Saints, they really pick up Rosen by trading back about a dozen spots in the 2nd Round and a 4th to get him.

The Rosen acquisition offers one of these possibilities: A franchise QB, a commodity for a trade down the road, cheap back up, or low-cost roll of the dice…

… And it discounts the ‘Tank’ that many pay per heads expected.

Given the Tannehill and Quinn trade, letting Ja’Wuan James walk, and now this, Grier’s successes are becoming a trend. And if this is Grier being Grier and not a blip on the radar, Miami is certain to rise from the ashes.

Has prejudice of Rosen tainted the reality?

Former NFL Wide Receiver Steve Smith said this about Rosen after ‘news’ that he ‘unfollowed’ the Cardinals on Social Media…

“We’ve got six rounds in the next couple days. Guys are getting replaced. You are replaceable. They say in the league, the more you can do, it helps your opportunities. So now you’re mad because they brought some competition in here? So you’re going to try to take your ball? Well first of all, son, it ain’t your damn ball to take anyway.

So you just keep playing with your phone, and you keep showing us what the stigma of you and who you are at UCLA. Now you’ve brought it to the professional level and showed us when things don’t go your way, you’re going to cry in the corner. But guess what? They’re going to ship your [expletive] somewhere else, and you can go cry and be their problem. Listen, this is a man’s game. Be man and go against that man, one-on-one. He gets 10 plays, you get 10 plays, do your deal. Ain’t nobody giving you nothing…. You know why he won’t be on the roster? Because he ain’t got enough heart to be on that roster. He’s got to go out there and work his [expletive] off. He don’t want to work.”

‘Allegedly’ breaking a 3-year-old boy’s arm isn’t a reason for outrage with Smith…

First, I find it ironic that unprofessional is Smith’s gripe, as he unprofessionally analyses Rosen. Also, I wonder how warped Smith is to be this appalled by an ‘unfollow’, but the same ire didn’t rise up about Tyrek Hill ‘allegedly’ breaking his 3-year-old son’s arm.

Smith must take his social media seriously.

I’m not a fan of the image Rosen has. Maybe it is who is he or maybe not. But the vitriol surrounding him seems to have grown far past rational boundaries. Maybe some of this prejudice has affected the way I’ve viewed him?

Rosen has taken the haymakers from Chris Carter to Steve Smith pretty well now I think about it. He has been more ‘professional’ than Smith was during his big shot with an open mic.

I’m willing to wipe clean the image he has built and one that has been ‘molded’ by the likes of Steve Smith. I’m funny like that: Breaking a kid’s arms is a lot higher on the totem pole of ‘bad’ in my book. Also, it was reported that Larry Fitzgerald said to Rosen about his work ethic, character, and the way he carried himself,  ‘Whatever happens here this isn’t the end for you’.

We have a new quarterback at an amazing price because of Chris Grier’s grit and brain. On some level yet to be determined, the Dolphins have won at the quarterback position.

Josh Rosen, you have a new lease on your image… let’s see who you really are. Go Phins!!!

Found some good clip I’ll put in my article on Rosen… think he’ll be at least a B player for us.

I commend Grier on his draft-savvy move. He took a took a low second round pick and a fifth round pick from next year’s draft and picked up a guy who was the 10th pick in last year’s draft. In addition, our original 2nd round pick earned us another draft pick in next year’s draft. Good drafting skills.

Now about Rosen. He sucked last year but he sucked on a team that really sucked. He took a licking because their line was so bad. I hope that this Rookie licking makes him appreciate a second chance, even if it is with the Dolphins; another team with a bad offensive line. You have to figure that the Cardinals know more about this guy than we do. They would not have drafted a 5’10” QB with a real future in baseball if they didn’t believe that last year’s high draft pick wasn’t a bust. Why? Because they have too many needs to fill if the QB slot is adequately filled. They were desperate for a starting QB!

The gamble here is that the QB, who comes to us as a relative bargain, is coachable and we have the staff to coach him up. We will start the season with Fitzpatrick at the helm simply because he is the most polished NFL quarterback. But, as we all know, Fitzpatrick will slump somewhere along the way. The Dolphins need to use the preseason and the early season games to construct an offensive line that can protect our QB – whoever it is. The key to Dolphin success is controlling the line of scrimmage on both offense and defense. Both Fitzpatrick and Rosen will benefit from an improved offensive line.

Rosen’s turn will come by mid-season. The early part of our schedule does not do us any favors. Rosen should benefit from an offense that has had time to gel. If he looks good then we have made a wise investment. If he looks mediocre then we know that we will take a QB next year and the year after, knowing the Dolphins.

Both QB’s need some help from the running game and from the defense. Fitzpatrick on a short field can score some points. I assume Rosen’s game will improve if the defense can get him close to the red zone too. This is a wait and see portion of the Dolphin’s season. Can a paper thin defense stay healthy enough to play as a unit in November and December? If either Fitzpatrick or Rosen are faced with playing from continuously playing from behind, neither will have a good season. If this becomes reality, we are then faced with another Tannehill scenario where everyone argues that the roster is hold them back from showing how good they really are.

“I commend Grier on his draft-savvy move. ” most adept GM moves we’ve had in some time, Van.
“The key to Dolphin success is controlling the line of scrimmage on both offense and defense. Both Fitzpatrick and Rosen will benefit from an improved offensive line.”
Grier and Flore will prove themselves by getting something out of the six new linemen. Deiter has all the tools and should fit at LG. O-line success will determine the wins this year.
I know you don’t see it, but I think the defense will be competent this year… not great, but solid. My great uncertainty is the Oline. I can see how it will be put together, but I have less certainty with it than the D.
Rosen fits this system (at least how I guess it will look) better than with the Cards. We’ll see of course… I expect a few more players to be added in FA.

Thanks, Steve. Catching up the whole fam went out yesterday for Pizza, mall, and new Avenger movie… exhausted and catching up on the news and situation. I’m studying Deiter… I like what I’m seeing. I think he’ll fit in at LG.

First of all, I loved the Christian Wilkins pick. He’s an inside and outside D-Lineman and can play all three downs. Ed Oliver is good but I feared due to his size he would wear down and probably have too many injuries. Dexter Lawrence is also a solid DT but in all likelihood would come off the field on 3rd and long and definitely not a value at 13. Wilkins was great value at the 13th pick.

As for Josh Rosen. After extensive research, I really did not want the Dolphins to mess with the situation. I think he still has huge potential but I wanted the Phins to continue with the initial plan of rolling with Fitzpatrick and going after a QB in 2020. However, the more I thought about the trade, the more I realized just how astute a move it was. Here’s my rational:
The price was right in terms of draft assets. Handled well by Chris Grier
The money at $6M over 3 years is a huge bargain plus the 5th year option doesn’t hurt
Low risk, high reward if Rosen turns out to be franchise QB
If he turns out to be just good not great, he can be a backup QB and the Phins go after a QB next year anyway.

Now this may sound way off, but, it’s quite possible that the Dolphins long term goal may have changed to now going after Trevor Lawrence in 2021. Rosen would be on the roster with Lawrence in 2021 then become a free agent in 2022.
You would have a potentially similar situation to what the Eagles had with Wentz and Foles the last couple years.
I know it sounds far fetched but wouldn’t that scenario be amazing? Well, we shall see.
    Go Dolphins!

Hey, great to hear from you… if only Lemmu and Dunner could make a comeback! I agree on Rosen. If he can start and do decently, then he will have tremendous value. A 2 year starter that’s cheap with 2 years left on his contract and 5th-year option. Miami needs to keep grabbing QBs no matter what. They are valuable commodities… trade them for picks even if they bring back even slightly less value. If we had a Marino then no. But we can’t stick with mid-level QBs and pay them elite money. If we keep stacking picks then we can take one every year and every other year if we find a stud. It’s funny Baker talks and played well… so it was okay for the media. Rosen had a disaster of a situation and didn’t so dopes like Smith can say what they want. This system will suit Rosen very well. Not sold he’s the answer… we’ll see Fritz. With Lawrence, he was a perfect 2 Gap player… Wilkens ATM is a 1 Gap… it will be interesting to see how they use him and what this D will be. I’m jut glad we didn’t miss out on both of them. Standing pat was the right move. Wilkens has a Sapp lite vibe to him… loved him from the start… Lawrence is the whale that got away along with Ngata, Wilfork, and Vea (little pun intended). Excited… hope Dieter fills the LG spot.

        Yelp!

A key mistake made for years with the Dolphins was not allowing the proper quarterback competition to developed. I believe the true cause of our failure in south beach. I keep saying don’t be afraid of success. Rosen after carefully watching some of his games etc. Will bring to Miami a talent we have not seen from the quarterback for decades.

Rosen unlike other Quarterbacks coming to Miami, has talent that hasn’t been touch yet, and he’s talented and hungry to shut the critique negative volume. For sure he will have a blocking offensive line and a serious running game that we are developing this off season.

I’ve had it up to my throat with these so called quarterback whisper’s and Quarterback Guru’s Coaches. I think the Dolphins will be a force to contend with. I will say this if I was Rosen and had no blocking it would have been really simple for me every play would have been a hand off out of my hands.

I was disappointed that we could not bring Taylor Cornelius to camp as an undrafted Free agent and Boise State QB Brett Rypien not drafted. I knew the Patriots would take Jarrett Stidham Quarterback from Auburn they were flirting with him over the months. They got him in the 4th I believed. This draft we did not a the clout.

“I’ve had it up to my throat with these so-called quarterback whisper’s and Quarterback Guru’s Coaches” YUP

Stidham has been your man from the beginning. If Beli sides with you, that’s a big check in your box.

Excellent analysis. Steve Smith is way out of line.

    • admin

Thanks a lot, Tony. Smith could have said the something the right way and added evidence to the contrary (loads of evidence for that) and that would have nailed it. If Rosen does well he’ll get the last laugh…

  • Randy Buckland

Steve Smith won’t be on tv to much longer after his episode about J.Rosen (I believe).Anyway I agree about Chris Grier,so far it looks like he is the G.M. we have needed the past 20 years.Everything he has done so far looks to be the right moves.I for one loves what he has done, now if he can wheel and deal and possibly pick up an O.L. before the draft is done he will have done a great job.The past G.M. would have gone out and signed some free agent at top dollar but now we are going with young guys of the draft and build this team from ground up and hopefully in a couple of years we will be competing once again for championships just like the good ole days.

    • admin

Yeah, Randy… a Rich said above it could have been better just to grab McCoy, but with the QB spot so crucial to get him so cheap in picks and salary for essentially a 4th, it was hard to resist… and I don’t like the image of Rosen. I was set against it… but as long as they grab another QB next year too and don’t rest the whole franchise on him, I’m good. Worst case he plays, increase his value and we trade him for better value than we paid. I’m really starting to like Grier a the GM, though, Randy… My ‘Faildar’ hasn’t alerted me once so far… still early I guess. But it does feel good not to go full retard.

    • Russ

Sorry, the house cleaning should’ve been complete with Grier and owner. Just my opinion, my guess in win/loss has been right on for past 7-8 years, was easy predictions. I don’t see a change for time to come until an inept clueless owner is gone. And I’ve been a fan since our Phins began. For some reason NOBODY INVOLVED WITH THIS TEAM can resolve the exact issues every year. Terrible secondary, defense that CANT stop a 3rd down with 15+ YTG, horrible offensive protection, and can’t seem to use a TE or a rcvr across the middle that has killed us for yrs. I hope I’m wrong but let’s see what happens

      • admin

You could very well nail it this year again too… but the problems with the past have been bad decisions by the regime starting with the owner then FO and then coaching. Ross made the right decision to take his hands out of the cookie jar. He did. Maybe Grier isn’t the right choice… we’ll see. The next issue was the lack of a coherent team building plan. Grier made the right decisions to cut old and expensive players and build through the draft without desperation. We have a ton quality picks next year and he pulled picks out of a hat for Quinn and Tannehill. He also purchased Rosen with a borrowed pick in a deal that offset the price of Rosen in a big way. Will the players he picked pan out? We’ll see, but so far, both Ross and Grier have had the right philosophy. Flores is now in the center stage. I think it’s fair that you see it the way you do and feel the way you do, but the philosophy is the best we’ve seen in decades. The truth of which way that right philosophy is headed won’t be know until it hits the field… though preseason will give decent indications.
