In Week 2 Of 2017 Todd Bowles Set Template To Beat Phins, But…

…Will Bowles do it again in Week 2 of 2018… Or Can Gase flip the script?

Bowles will need to find another scheme because last year's won't work

Bowles will need to find a different defensive scheme because the 2017 edition won’t work this time

Todd Bowles has always had my respect: a stand-up guy and a darn good coach. Last year, when Bowles loaded the box, play press, and attack Pouncey with DT’s playing 0-1i Technique… and then subsequent coaches used the same template against Miami with great success. My respect deepened.

The Chargers in Week 1 of 2017 played soft Zones and off coverage. Ajayi went off for 122 yards and a Dolphins ‘W’.

Bowles was having none of that.

The Dolphins had a Center with bad hips who couldn’t handle power, a Running Back who only wanted to run Zone Stretch, bounce outside, and was a poor option on 3rd Downs, and no Tight End to create a seam threat. Bowels dared Miami to attack deep and make them pay.

Gase kept attacking stacked boxes with runs and short passes in Week 2 of 2017.

You can check out last year’s article here if you want a closer look.

At the time, Gase bore most of the responsibility. Later when certain players limitations were exposed, some responsibility was shifted off Gase’s shoulders. Chicken soup from chicken… well, you know the saying.

When Kenyan Drake entered the starting role Gase’s offense complexity changed, and the production picked up.

Still, Bowles out coached Gase.

Now with that said, Bowels is the Head Coach of the New York Jest… and I want to see him lose week-in and week-out… unless he plays the Pats or Bills. So this isn’t about gassing him and throwing Gase under the bus.

This about the need for Coach Gase to return the ‘2017 favor’ to ‘Gagreen’ and Bowles.

Last year’s Week 2 didn’t end well for the Dolphins who were riding high after their first game… It’s time for Gase to prove he’s a quality coach and flip the script.

Even if Josh Sitton misses the game (big loss), Gase has enough talent this week to beat the Jets-if he schemes right and calls a good game.

Don’t get too wrapped up in the 48-17 Jets blowout of the Lion.

The story of the Jets / Lion game was about a Detroit meltdown. The Lions QBs threw 5 picks, and the Jets said they knew their signs. Lions being predictable with ‘stolen signs’ also happened in 2015. It’s a primary reason Jim Bob Cooter is the current OC. They fired his predecessor, Joe Lombardi, for the same reason.

Now I have zero clues if the Jets ‘stole the signals’ or not. But you can see on tape a Jet screaming screen pass before a screen pass. So there’s at least some credence they knew something.

What I know for sure is that Matt Stafford had a bad game… and NFL refs might be the most inconsistent in all the major sports. How the hell is this not Pass Interference? This contact happens 7 yards beyond the Line of Scrimmage! Guess Matt Patrica will learn fast that ex-Patriots don’t get ‘ref love’ when they leave Big Daddy Kraft’s team.

Ryan Tannehill must play a clean game.

Tannehill must support his coach by going 4 Qtrs without an errant pass that turns into a pick, a fumbled snap, to go along with 2-3 big time throws.

In 2017 the Jets ranked 28th in sacks and after 1 game it doesn’t look like much has changed.

Tannehill will have a clean enough pocket with or without Sitton. The run game may suffer, but Ted Larsen protected well enough at Left Guard last season. Gase has the speed with Wilson, Stills, and Grant to force the Jets secondary to play Over Technique instead of the Under Technique they played in 2017. This will create space and room for both Gase and Tannehill to work.

Also, Drake and Gore with have a solid interior line (again even if Sitton is absent) that can handle power to run behind. And both backs can attack the defense as receivers.

The table is set for Gase. There are no excuses for losing.

Yes, the Meadowlands is a tough environment and the Jets are almost never an easy out. But it’s time for this staff to step up and throw a touchdown this game… just like Bowles did last year.

And I know Gase will never hear this, but please stop the stretch runs to the short side. They didn’t work last year against the Jets, last week against the Titans, and the Lion didn’t have success against the Jets with them last week. Keep your bubble screen if you want (in moderation), but for the love of God shelve the stretch runs short side, at least for this week.

Sorry, my armchair made me say it!

I’ve liked Adam Gase from the start… and still do. Last year shook me a bit, but I clung bitterly to all the extenuation circumstances…

…But you know what? I like the Miami Dolphins more. So it’s time for Gase and Tannehill to step forward, grab Dolphins fans by the throat and say, “I know what I’m doing.”

And then go out and do it!

Week 2 against the Jets is the perfect time for Gase and Tannehill to prove their salt. If not now? When? Go Phins!!

I am looking forward to this week’s game. Gase will adjust his offense to eliminate weaknesses and seek out those mismatches that must exist. The defense is still a problem for us. I think the jets will beat us by a narrow margin if we pay attention to penalty reduction and keep the ball out of Darnald’s hands.
Can someone please ask Still’s and company to just stand there or stay in the locker room. He is the last knot-head embarrassing us.

The loss of Sitton will complicate matters. This will embolden the Jets D and they will creep even closer to the LOS. With a rookie QB, the Dolphins should win… but I am worried. If they are disciplined Phins win. If not a ‘L’ and it could snowball from there. This team needs to finally step up.

ESPN is what I’m disgusted about for not showing the anthem.
