Is A Phins Trade-Up for Burrow Just a Dream?
Only a miracle or blockbuster trade can bring Joe Burrow to Miami?
LSU quarterback Joe Burrow just capped off what can arguably be called the best season by a college football player in the history of college football.
Yes, you read it correctly. Joe Burrow had THE best season ever by a college quarterback. The guy went undefeated, set a bunch of records, and dominated the best competition in College Football all season long. Now he’s the unanimous projected #1 Overall Pick by all the sports betting software providers.
Burrow appears to have every tool: drops a pass on a dime, great pocket presence, deceptively fast and decisive when he decides to use his legs, cool as a cucumber and has that all-important ‘it factor’ as a leader of men. And as the cherry on top, Burrow also flourished in a pro-style offense this season…
… Unfortunately, Joe Burrow is all but destined to got to the Cinncinati Bengals.
It would take a massive amount of luck and draft capital for the Dolphins to trade up with the Bengals to acquire Burrow.
Since it’s the Dolphins offseason, let us spitball a Burrow trade.
Sure, they’d need to give up a ton of valuable draft assets to pull off a move of this magnitude. But, Chris Grier did pick up two additional first-round picks for this draft. That’s a ton of ammunition to trade up. So what would be the best way to use the ammo?
The theory early in the season was Miami would be bad enough and have enough draft assets to trade up for Tua if they didn’t wind up with the #1 pick. Despite Tua’s injury and because of Burrows’s meteoric rise that theory can still be in place just with a different QB target. With the Dolphins war chest of draft assets, if any team is going to pull off this monster trade, it’s Miami.
Should they, could they, and would they make the move for the top pick?
Miami would have to offer three 1st Round picks to the Bengals just to start the conversation. That’s a big haul. And likely, in order to pry away Burrow, it could take even a bit more than that.
All of this is probably a moot point because the Bengals likely want Burrow more than the picks…
… But, you never know, this is the Bungles we’re talking about.
Sure, if Miami did pull off this trade it would be three rookies for one. Considering Miami needs a ton of help maybe three 1st-Round picks would end up better for Miami long term? There is also the monetary side of the equation to consider. Having to pay three 1st-Round picks compared to one (even if a QB salary) when their rookie contracts end is more expensive. If all three of these picks become stars would Miami keep them when their rookie contract ends or let the talent walk as in years past? This though would be a great problem to have considering Miami barely hits on their top draft picks.
Then we have to wonder will Burrow be the real deal in the NFL? If not and he’s just okay what then? Baker Mayfield was the 1st Overall pick and broke rookie passing records, but he didn’t bring the Browns success and now his talent level is in question. Nothing in football is guaranteed.
Would the fanbase support this regime trading away three 1st-Round picks on a roll of the dice? I’d say since many likely would be given there hasn’t been a Franchise QB in Miami since Dan Marino retired? But would they still support this regime if Burrow ends up less than elite?
This organization is at the crossroads on so many fronts. Whatever happens in the future, right now it’s an exciting time to be a Dolphins fan.
What are the rest of the Miami Dolphins news fans’ thoughts about potentially trading away all our first-round picks to draft Burrow… if the Bengals are willing?

Who ever we select. We must love him no matter what for the season either learning on the bench a year or healing. No excuse not to have strong arm, no excuse not to be accurate, no excuse not able to extend plays with mobility.

BACK-TO-BACK SEASONS WITH AN ANKLE INJURY AND A DISLOCATED HIP WILL GIVE US SOMETHING TO TALK ABOUT UNTIL APRIL (AND THE BENGALS AN EXCUSE FOR PASSING ON HIM). MOSTLY, BECAUSE PEOPLE WILL TIRE OF TALKING ABOUT HOW PROLIFIC AND PRECISE THE SOUTHPAW IS. SOME WILL TRY TO COMPARE TAGOVAILOA TO MIKE VICK, BUT HE’S CLOSER TO A LEFTY (AND TALLER) VERSION OF RUSSELL WILSON.

Not high on Herbert either.
I ranked Herbert higher in 2018, though he has his decision making issues at times, He had a strong
performance closing this 2019 season and he will be hard to overlooked during his Pro performances in the up coming months Herbert will be a starter in the NFL.
He had good buzz so far in senior Bowl week.
Hello Admin and Dolphins Fans
From April 2019 to Jan 2020 Projected NFL 2020 draft some of the players stocks fluctuated within the top 10 selections. Joe Burrow did not enter the top ten until November 2019 and continued to Soar to number one picked! Other than Tua’ injury and Chase Young, who else have been consistently holding a top ten spot since April 2019? That would help narrow things down maybe? What’s your take?

OCTOBER FIRST-ROUND 2020 NFL MOCK DRAFT
BY BEN RAMOS-SALSBERG -OCTOBER 1, 2019
MIAMI DOLPHINS – TUA TAGOVAILOA (ALABAMA) – QUARTERBACK
THE DOLPHINS ARE CLEARLY TRYING TO GET TO THE BOTTOM OF THE LEAGUE AS FAST AS POSSIBLE AND THAT MEANS RECONSTRUCTING FROM THE GROUND, UP. JOSH ROSEN MAY HAVE BEEN DEALT AN UNFAIR HAND (TWICE) BUT THAT WON’T STOP BRIAN FLORES FROM GETTING THE GUY HE WANTS TO BUILD HIS TEAM AROUND. TAGOVAILOA IS SEPARATING HIMSELF FROM THE REST OF THE QUARTERBACKS IN HIS CLASS AND IS CLOSE TO BECOMING A LOCK FOR WHOEVER HAS THE FIRST OVERALL PICK IN 2020.
2. CINCINNATI BENGALS – JUSTIN HERBERT (OREGON) – QUARTERBACK
WITH THE BENGALS ONCE AGAIN STUMBLING OUT OF THE GATE, IT’S TIME TO MOVE ON FROM ANDY DALTON. THEY CLEARLY CAN’T WIN WITH HIM AND NEED TO FIND A QUARTERBACK THAT CAN BE MORE OF A GAME-CHANGER THAN HE EVER WAS AS SOON AS POSSIBLE. HERBERT IS A STEP BEHIND TAGOVAILOA RIGHT NOW BUT HAS PLAYED SOLID BALL SINCE OREGON’S COLLAPSE AGAINST AUBURN IN THEIR SEASON OPENER. WITH 14 TOUCHDOWNS, NO PICKS AND ON PACE TO SURPASS HIS PASSING TOTALS FROM A YEAR AGO, SO FAR IN 2019, HE’S HAVING HIS BEST SEASON IN HIS FINAL SEASON IN COLLEGE.
3. WASHINGTON REDSKINS – JERRY JEUDY (ALABAMA) – WIDE RECEIVER
EVEN WITH HIS FORMER OHIO STATE TEAMMATE TERRY MCLAURIN LOOKING GREAT AS A ROOKIE, DWAYNE HASKINS IS GOING TO NEED MORE WEAPONS ON ONE OF THE WORST RECEIVING CORPS IN FOOTBALL. JEUDY MAY BE THE BEST OVERALL PLAYER IN THE DRAFT AND IS SHOWING WHY HE DESERVED TO RECEIVE THE BILETNIKOFF AWARD AS THE NATION’S BEST RECEIVER A YEAR AGO. HE ISN’T AS BIG AS A JULIO JONES BUT IS AS COMPLETE A RECEIVER COMING OUT OF COLLEGE.
4. MIAMI DOLPHINS (VIA PITTSBURGH STEELERS) – ANDREW THOMAS (GEORGIA) – OFFENSIVE TACKLE
IF PITTSBURGH REALLY IS AS BAD AS THEY LOOK RIGHT NOW, THE DOLPHINS ARE GOING TO HAVE A VERY TOUGH CHOICE TO MAKE HERE AT NUMBER FOUR. THEY’VE ALREADY WON THE TRADE BY GETTING THIS HIGH A PICK AND COULD ELECT TO GO FRANCHISE PASS RUSHER OR TACKLE. HERE THEY CHOOSE THE LATTER. THOMAS IS THE ANCHOR OF A GREAT GEORGIA RUN-BLOCKING LINE AND IS AS ATHLETIC AS THEY COME AT HIS POSITION. THE DOLPHINS NEED TO PROTECT THEIR FRANCHISE QUARTERBACK AFTER MOVING LAREMY TUNSIL.
5. NEW YORK GIANTS – CHASE YOUNG (OHIO STATE) – EDGE
WITH JEUDY OFF THE BOARD, THE GIANTS ELECT TO GO WITH MAYBE THE NEXT BEST OVERALL PLAYER IN THE DRAFT. YOUNG IS LONG, QUICK, AND BIG — THE PROTOTYPE FOR A PASS RUSHER IN TODAY’S NFL. THOUGH OHIO STATE HAS NOT FACED ANY MAJOR COMPETITION OUTSIDE OF NEBRASKA, YOUNG HAS BEEN DOMINANT OFF THE EDGE. THROUGH JUST FIVE GAMES THIS SEASON, HE IS ONLY 2.5 SACKS SHORT OF HIS SEASON TOTAL (13 GAMES) IN 2018 AT 8.0. IT’S IMPOSSIBLE FOR ANY OPPONENT TO NOT BASE YOUR GAME-PLAN AROUND CONTAINING YOUNG RIGHT NOW.
6. DENVER BRONCOS – GRANT DELPIT (LSU) – SAFETY
THE BRONCOS DEFENSE IS FAILING MOST AT GETTING TO THE QUARTERBACK RIGHT NOW BUT WITH TWO STUDS OFF THE EDGE, THEY NEED TO UPGRADE THEIR DEFENSE IN SOME OTHER WAY. DELPIT CAN COVER SIDELINE TO SIDELINE IN ANY SECONDARY. KAREEM JACKSON IS CURRENTLY LISTED AS THE BRONCOS STRONG SAFETY BUT COULD BETTER TRANSLATE TO FREE SAFETY GOING ON AGE 32. DELPIT IS CRAZY ATHLETIC AND WILL INSTANTLY IMPROVE A DEFENSE THAT HAS SLOUCHED TO JUST AVERAGE AFTER BEING GREAT FOR SO LONG.
7. TENNESSEE TITANS – JAKE FROMM (GEORGIA) – QUARTERBACK
THE 2019 MARCUS MARIOTA LOOKS NOTHING LIKE THE PLAYER THE TITANS DRAFTED BACK IN 2015 AND IT’S PROBABLY TIME TO MOVE ON. WITH DERRICK HENRY IN TENNESSEE’S BACKFIELD, FROMM COULD BE ASKED TO PLAY A SIMILAR ROLE TO THE ONE HE HAS PLAYED IN GEORGIA. THE DAWGS RUN-FIRST ATTACK HAS LIMITED THE FREQUENCY OF WHICH FROMM PASSES BUT HE HAS THE ABILITY TO MAKE THE PASSES ASKED OF AN NFL QUARTERBACK. HIS PERFORMANCE WHEN HEAD COACH KIRBY SMART LET HIM THROW IN THEIR MATCHUP WITH NOTRE DAME LOOKED LIKE ONE OF A QUARTERBACK READY TO LEAD A TEAM IN THE NFL. WHETHER FROMM’S STATS HOLD HIM FROM BEING DRAFTED THIS HIGH IS STILL UNKNOWN.
8. TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS – TRISTAN WIRFS (IOWA) – OFFENSIVE TACKLE
THIS MAY BE A BIT HIGH FOR WIRFS BUT GETTING A FRANCHISE PIECE ON THE OFFENSIVE LINE SHOULD BE A HUGE PRIORITY FOR BRUCE ARIAN’S TEAM. IF THEY ELECT TO STICK WITH JAMEIS WINSTON GOING FORWARD, IT MAKES SENSE TO GIVE HIM AS MUCH HELP AS HE CAN. WIRFS IS A TERRIFIC ATHLETE WITH QUICK FEET AND ALL THE OTHER TRAITS THAT MAKE FOR A GOOD NFL LINEMAN. DEMAR DOTSON IS ON HIS WAY OUT AND WIRFS WOULD BE A NICE REPLACEMENT.
9. LAS VEGAS RAIDERS – ISAIAH SIMMONS (CLEMSON) – LINEBACKER/SAFETY
THE RAIDERS COULD VERY WELL GO FOR A QUARTERBACK HERE BUT WITH THREE ALREADY OFF THE BOARD, IT’S HARD TO SEE THEM REACHING FOR ONE AS OPPOSED TO TRADING BACK AND GETTING THEIR GUY LATER. HOWEVER, SIMMONS IS WELL WORTH THE NINTH OVERALL PICK. IF THERE IS ONE GUY COMING OUT OF COLLEGE THIS YEAR THAT PASSES THE EYE TEST, IT’S SIMMONS. HE’S QUICK, HAS GREAT COVERAGE ABILITY AS A LINEBACKER, AND MAKES PLAYS ALL OVER THE FIELD. THE RAIDERS NEED TO CONTINUE TO ADD TO THEIR SUBPAR DEFENSE AND SIMMONS HAS ENOUGH ATHLETIC ABILITY TO ACCOUNT FOR TWO PIECES.
10. ARIZONA CARDINALS – TREY ADAMS (WASHINGTON) – OFFENSIVE TACKLE’S ABILITY TO EXTEND PLAYS WITH HIS LEGS, COULD LOOK EVEN WORSE. ADAMS IS A LEFT TACKLE WITH GREAT SIZE AT 6’8” AND 322 POUNDS AND COULD BE THE FIRST PIECE IN STABILIZING ARIZONA’S LINE GOING FORWARD. HE IS EXCELLING AS A PASS BLOCKER NOW THAT HE’S FINALLY HEALTHY WITH THE INTANGIBLES TO BECOME A GOOD BLINDSIDE BLOCKER IN THE NFL.
I don’t see Fromm as a Top 10 prospect.
Yeap!
These are the ranking’s by experts not my ranking’s. Their stock is up and down based on their performances each week.
Posted nine month’s ago!
Jeff Sentell
@jeffsentellIs that in any way like Fromm and the talented backfields Georgia has brought to bear over the last two seasons? Was that (mostly) Nick Chubb and Sony Michel and D’Andre Swift and an ascending O-line carrying the heavy loads there?
How much credit should Fromm get for elevating the program since he took the reins in 2017?
The All-American candidate has a sterling 24-5 record in two seasons as the quarterback of record for Georgia. That mark will include the following contests which can be defined as some true degree of difficulty games:
1 National Championship against Alabama
2 SEC Championship games
1 Rose Bowl against a Heisman Trophy QB and a future No. 1 overall pick
1 road game against a Top 10 team in Auburn
Another road game against a Top 15 team (LSU) in one of the SEC’s toughest venues
2 Georgia-Florida tilts in Jacksonville
1 Sugar Bowl against Texas
Of course, the record points to the Bulldogs owning a 4-5 record in those contests. Some draw a parallel to Fromm not being able to close out those big games. A truly great quarterback would do that, right?
That’s a popular topic to some. Yet they don’t apply the same logic to the other end of that argument. If an elite run game actually carried the Bulldogs to those big games, why is Fromm’s resume saddled with not being out to close out the big ones?
Is he a first-round pick? The NFL scouting opinions do vary. Of course, those talking parts are all highly subjective.
Admin I stand corrected Jake Fromm QB Georgia was listed in the top 10 during the month of April and May 2019. Once the 2019 season started he was not listed in the top 10.

Apparently, you have forgotten how to play football. First you need to control the line of scrimmage. This is done with the offensive line, a tight end that can block a little and sometimes a fullback. On defense. this is accomplished with the “Front.” A combination of down linemen and linebackers. The safety valve here are the safeties, who must come up and save the day on running plays. The Dolphins traded away all of their All-Pro talent at these positions. They now have draft picks.
The running game assists the quarterback immensely, we traded away our running game, as well. We cannot run the ball and we cannot stop the run. No quarterback can solve these two problems by himself. If a QB could do this Dan Marino would have a Super Bowl Ring.
We have an adequate Quarterback staff for this rag-tag rotating roster of a football team. Two coaches left the good ship Dolphin already. It won’t get better by taking a player you are not ready for. When the time comes, Fitzmagic will be a on the field coach and help groom some lucky guy into an good QB. When you watch the Titans play the Chief’s this weekend, I want everyone to think back on how bad Tannehill had gotten while he was a Dolphin. The Dolphin wrecking crew (coaching staff) of yesteryear would have wrecked the Aaron Rogers, Drew Breeses and any other QB we might have drafted in the same way we wrecked Tannehill. At least he got a second chance. Let’s allow the Bengals to wreck Burrows in the same way they have screwed up Dalton.
I will say it again, we have to trade down and draft wisely. We have to replace all of the key players Grier traded away. It is kind of a zero sum maneuver, if you hit on all of those picks, which I doubt we will. After all, we are the Miami Dolphins. We took Ted Ginn Junior with our #1 pick!
Apparently, your reading comprehension wasn’t up to snuff this week. This is Jimmy’s… but since I’m the admin, I’ll respond for him.
“Is A Phins Trade-Up for Burrow Just a Dream?” Notice the question mark? Now, I admit he’s high on getting a QB… a bit too high, in my opinion. Still, he did add this:
“Considering Miami needs a ton of help maybe three 1st-Round picks would end up better for Miami long term?”
“Would the fanbase support this regime trading away three 1st-Round picks on a roll of the dice? I’d say since many likely would be given there hasn’t been a Franchise QB in Miami since Dan Marino retired? But would they still support this regime if Burrow ends up less than elite?”
“Then we have to wonder will Burrow be the real deal in the NFL? If not and he’s just okay what then? Baker Mayfield was the 1st Overall pick and broke rookie passing records, but he didn’t bring the Browns success and now his talent level is in question. Nothing in football is guaranteed.”
“If all three of these picks become stars would Miami keep them when their rookie contract ends or let the talent walk as in years past? This though would be a great problem to have considering Miami barely hits on their top draft picks.”
Compare the previous statement to your statement:
“It is kind of a zero sum maneuver, if you hit on all of those picks, which I doubt we will.”
So, your monologue is disingenuous in its attempt to denigrate Jimmy’s take. Is your statement incorrect? No. I fully support it and have said so for quite some time.
In fact, I do recall saying Tanny was capable of winning (many times and did a whole video) with the right situation.
Also, with your last statement: “I will say it again, we have to trade down and draft wisely. ”
Well, to be clear, I was the first to mention trading back on this site on Nov. 3rd https://phinsnews.com/miami-dolphins-news-for-many-phins-fans-being-patient-isnt-easy/
and on the 8th “Thanks, Steve. Actually I’m hoping we get the 4th so it’s enough to have a team want to trade up for it and not low enough that an excellent player is too tempting to not trade…. although based on today, I might change my mind if Burrow is available. Need to watch Hurts… As I’ve said, evaling college QBs is the hardest to do and my weakest skill.” https://phinsnews.com/miami-dolphins-news-risk-of-banking-on-the-tank-chase-young-suspended/
and Andews-gutsy-phins-beat-colts-in-indy/
and “Honestly, I hope if Tua, Burrow or Young isn’t in play that they trade back even into the second round and keep stacking picks. If they do, they will eventually be in a position to get ‘THE’ QB. A team that has great median talent is better than one with greater height and lows. It might take a bit longer to reach the top on this course, but it will be a better team with longer staying power.” https://phinsnews.com/miami-dolphins-news-gutsy-phins-beat-colts-in-indy/
and… https://phinsnews.com/miami-dolphins-news-scrappy-phins-sloppy-in-loss-but-staff-shares-blame/
… and… well, you get it. All are well before you mentioned it on the 27th https://phinsnews.com/miami-dolphins-news-what-should-phins-fans-be-thankful-for-this-season/.
Not to make it a pissing contest… but you did, so I must. 🙂 Not that trading back is the right move, but I am glad you agree with me on this.
You accumulated all of these draft picks this season and although Burrow looks great I would hate to see 2 or 3 1st round picks be traded away for one player when we need so much more. Tua will be there at 5,grab him with our #5 pick and build the rest of the team.
I agree they can’t expend all their picks on a single player, Randy… And in fact, (see the above comment) I’ve advocated that only for Young or Burrow should they not trade back if a trade back for more picks is available, Randy. Tua is too much of a risk in my book. Could he end up a great choice? Yup!!! But, I just don’t like the odds. Jimmy is a bit too fixed on a QB in my opinion. We need patience to turn this thing around. Still, no one has all the answers… if Burrow turns into Payton Manning would anyone bat an eye at giving up three picks? Nope… but, we don’t know if Burrow is elite or not. College is one game, NFL another. Then there are always injuries to take into account.
I agree with most that we stay put, take Tua if he is still there at 5 and build the team
If Tua is not there at 5 then just wait till next year for our future QB
Whoever takes Tua has to know that he might not play at all for maybe a whole year
Only Miami can afford to take him inder that scenario
Tua should go in the late first round or early second round to a team like Pittsburgh. A team with an aging QB who is questionable health wise.
I’m even skeptical about Tua at 5. Jimmy loves Tua and wants an elite QB in the worst way. I disagree with that mindset. Late 1st I wouldn’t mind taking Tua, maybe. We might miss out if we don’t earlier, but if my life was on the line, I wouldn’t make the bet.
Admin/Jimmy
Very Nice Article and 99% a dream. Not likely the Bengals will give up possibly their Golden Goose Joe Burrow’s? Like you said the Bengal’s will fine away to mess it up?
Yeah, it’s a dream… but if it did come about it could very well be a nightmare. Too much in the move up would be gambled in my opinion, Steve. I’m fine with not even picking a QB in RD 1…
Hello Admin
I’m fine if the Dolphins don’t select a QB in the 1st round either. I’m fine if we select Tua later in the 1st round. I was high on Hurst later in the 1st round but based on his performances I would ranked him A picked 50th to 3rd round. He has lost maybe about 4 games out of about 56 games.
I’m fine if they draft Justin Herbert He will start for somebody(Herbert is about 20 years old with the strongest Arm maybe, I didn’t think he could rush but he has proved that he can.
Some say Love is an option if he sets out for a year to learn so what’s the different s with Tua setting out a year to heal? Phillips River has moved to Florida and the rumors are flying about Tampa Bay Buc?
Jake Fromm on the honest note is not a 1st rounder: His gift has been an above game manager with high football IQ.
During a media interview with Clemson Isiah Simmons he was asked about playing against the better QB’s before Joe Burrow’s and he mentioned Virginia QB as being the most elusive etc. There are about 5 QB’s who would be a good fit for the Dolphins in the 1st to 3rd round and that’s a gamble also.
Stephen Ross has proven he has a good nose for the QB it should be his called and forget about every body else.
I’m not very good at picking QB in college that will transition well in the NFL… I’ll give me two cents at some point, but I’d say it’s worth a penny at best.
