Is Adam Gase Eating His Own?

Adam Gase inches closer to 2018 being his final season as the Phins Head Coach.

Reshad Jones decides to quit after 10 snaps, but Gase says it’s Matt Burke’s fault.

Adam Gase has laid the fault of Reshad Jones’ decision to ‘self-bench’ on the poor communication skills of Matt Burke.

This is his public stance amid the Jones ‘hush-hush’ mystery. It doesn’t mean that’s the reality behind the scenes.

At face value though, this isn’t a good sign for fans of the Gase regime… or Phin Fans. Usually, when a Head Coach sides with players over the coaches and shoving staff closer to the chopping block, they are near the end of their tenure.

Gase stated that the Dolphins will handle the Jones situation ‘in-house’ under a cone of silence. And yet, he publically throws his Defensive Coordinator under the bus.

Now, Burk is the closest to Gase on the staff. Maybe this is a case of Burke taking one for the team… and Gase?

The murkiness this ‘event’ is even made murkier with additional facts.

1.  Gase didn’t know Jones was this unhappy and that it had gone on for so long. The Head Coach needs to be in touch with the pulse of the team. Maybe it’s Gase with communication problems? Hmmmm…

2.  It’s also being reported that the platooning surprised Jones… And yet, several players said they knew it was coming. Was this due to Jones being late to a meeting and missing a crucial bit of info? Doubt it. Anyone who has been in on a meeting with a coach prepping for a coming game knows something this big wouldn’t be, ‘Hey, we‘re platooning the secondary this week’ and nada about it for the rest of the session. A message of this magnitude would be broken up in several parts and reemphasized a few times. One would hope… or we have bigger problems than communication. No way this was ‘missed’. Even if this message was missed by some miracle, Jones quit instead of finishing the game and THEN working it out. This is UNACCEPTABLE behavior in a successful franchise. Hmmmm…

3.  Gase has criticized Burkes communication but then said, ‘Maybe I should sit in on the defense meeting to see how he communicates. How does the H.C. and best friend of Burke not know how he communicates after a year and a half as the DC? See #1 for issues on Gase’s communication.

At some point responsibility of the Head Coach’s failings need to be addressed

4.  How many players will it take for Gase or his staff to have problems with before he looks in the mirror to find the prime problems plaguing the team?

5. If he didn’t know what was going on with Jones DURING THE GAME, how is he the Head Coach? Sounds like he is just a cog in the wheel. Maybe Gase’s system that’s based on a high level of autonomous delegation isn’t an effective one. This goes back to what Phinsnews wrote last year about his unbreakable insistence Gase has to relinquish his play calling of the offense. Maybe if he wasn’t on the bench for half the game planning the offenses next move he’d be better apprised of the overall situation?

6.  Matthew Cannata tweeted this: “I’ve been working all day to get some scoop on Reshad Jones, Matt Burke, and Adam Gase. I’ve been able to put some pieces together. All of it has led to the fact that Matt Burke is on the hot seat. This week and weekend will be very telling for Matt Burke’s future in Miami.”

IF this is the case how do you explain how Gase hasn’t put himself in the hot seat given the stats below?

And this is a good year for Dolphins offense! Pretty comparable. Maybe Gase should fire himself from OC duties?!

It’s becoming more clear Gase needs to go… unless has a very good end to the season

Not even the best pay per head software sites like www.AcePerHead.com know what the truth is of this situation… and likely never will. But, I know 100% that Jones quit playing during a crucial game. I also know this dysfunctionality doesn’t go on to this magnitude and as publically with successful franchises.    

Since his first interview in 2016, I was a fan of Gase. WAS is becoming the operative word. I thought he showed guts and grit in 2016. After dealing with mealworm Philbin for 3 & 1/2 years, maybe I was just desperate. Next to Tony Sparano, rest in peace coach, Gase is next in line as the best Dolphins Head Coach since Shula. That’s not saying much I know. Still, I believe Gase will make a good HC down the line. But it appears he needs a heavy dose of humility before he realizes that the most crucial issue there was during his time in Miami was HIMSELF. Go Phins!!!
