I will be honest and that I am sick of the Dolphins drafting offensive linemen in the first round, however when your offensive line is an annual issue that is what you are forced to do. Even though Miami improved their offensive line play last season, there are still 2 glaring holes at the Guard position, and there is no guarantee Albert will be 100% healthy for the season opener. In addition, even though the offensive line does not get the glory and the publicity as the touchdown makers do, they are the foundation for the entire offense. They set up the running lanes for the running backs, and they provide the protection, so Tannehill has time to throw the ball. On a side note, Tannehill has shown that when he does have time to throw the ball he can be a very good QB in this league. With all that being said I, unfortunately, think that Miami should once again draft a lineman in the first round.
My first choice would be to get Brandon Scherff, however, unless there is a huge run on a particular position (namely wide receiver) then Scherff will in all likelihood be off the board by the time the Dolphins select at the number 14th spot. In that case, if I were in the war room I would be targeting LSU‘s offensive lineman La’el Collins. He played almost his entire college career at the Left Tackle position, but many sports betting software like www.AcePerHead.com are projecting him to be better suited to play guard in the NFL. Right off the bat drafting Collins would not only give Miami a new starting Guard, but he can also provide depth in the all-important Left Tackle position if Albert is not ready to start the season, or if he gets banged up. Also he would most likely play Right Guard which would pretty much solidify the right side of our offensive line for the next 7-10 years.
I would prefer to trade back just a bit and then draft Collins, however that could potentially cause us to lose out on Collins if another team jumps on him. However, with this being a deep draft, and Miami has other needs as well, I would be willing to take the risk on trading back and potentially missing out on Collins, but in the process still selecting a starting-caliber player in the first round, and adding another draft pick to our arsenal of picks.
I will say that in a dream scenario of us not having to still find starters on the offensive line, then I would much rather use our first-round pick on one of the top three wide receivers (White, Cooper or Parker) if they are on the board at the 14th spot. If all those players were gone then I would actually make a surprising pick and draft Todd Gurley, because I believe he has Peterson type talent, and running backs like that do not land in your draft lap every year. However this is not a dream scenario, because Miami stills needs to solidify their offensive line, which is an unglamorous but extremely vital position, which means my pick is Collins. If the rest of the Miami Dolphin News fans were the General Managers, who would you guys select in the first round?
