Jones’ threat to “hold-out” is only a rumor at this point.
The “news” that Reshad Jones has threatened to have a season long hold-out if he doesn’t get a new contract is a rumor that was started by Omar Kelly and is likely either just that, a rumor, or hot-air fed to Kelly by Jones.
Jones’ skipping voluntary OTA’s has added fuel to the contract dispute subplot. The surprise disappearing act is a major story line to the 2015 off-season that began just prior to the draft. It is one of the very few major problems that has cropped up in an otherwise very successful off-season.
With an early uphill fight due to road games in Seattle and New England to start the season, a new regimes desire to begin on the right foot, and the addition of two new starters in Maxwell and Abdul-Quddus to the secondary, Jones’ hold-out, however long it lasts, make things precarious.
Jones’ complaint is that he has outplayed his contract.
Jones posted a super 2015 campaign with stats that rivaled any safety in history. And while his guaranteed money is quite low by standards, his contract has him being paid as the 13th highest safety in the league.
With two years left on his contract, Reshad isn’t likely to hold-out, especially when money starts getting docked. And while the 28yr old has more leverage at this point than he will ever get again, it doesn’t take a great pay per head sportsbook like to see that the most likely outcome will end up some sort of compromise. Even though both sides will lose big if Jones sits, he stands to lose more, as money lost will never be regained. From his standpoint, he also runs the risk of pushing too hard and forcing the Dolphins brass to just decide to bit the bullet, make a stand, and use their star as an example of who is in control for future hold-outs.
I see this as jockeying for more guaranteed money and that there will likely be some contractual movement just prior to camp. The problem lies in that each day he isn’t working with the defense, it’s one day behind the 2016 defense will be. Reshad is a star and desperately needed. But, top down order must be enforced. Let’s hope he returns sooner rather than later. Go Fins!!!
