Jordan Phillips Looks To Shine In 2016
Jordan Phillips wasn’t thrilled with his 2015 campaign.
Jordan Phillips was considered a luxury pick last season in the 2015 NFL Draft. A super talented prospect who could dominate with a rare combination of size and agility, but inconsistency dropped him into the second where Miami pushed aside more pressing needs to take the best player available.
In his 2015 rookie season, Phillips registered 19 tackles and 2 sacks. The stat sheet doesn’t pop, but if you watched him play you’d say there were stretches where his play did.
Phillips without a doubt has room to grow…as do most second year players. Phillips needs to build his consistency through professionalism in preperation and approach. But, one of his big knocks was the inability to generate pressure by choosing to ‘stall out and bat passes down’ rather than fight through blocks. Phillips did a lot to dispel that chink in his game in his rookie year. Early on in 2015 he was one of the few who did put pressure on opposing QB’s
Jordan Phillips spoke about his need to grow in a recent interview.
Very few defensive tackles shine in their rookie season. It doesn’t a take a football gambling expert to know most don’t play like Suh in their inaugural season. This is Phillips second season, and in a recent interview he spoke of his need to grow. He spoke of “mindset” and the “little things” as areas he has improved on.
It’s far easier to talk about fixing your flaws than actually doing it. It could be hot air and rhetoric. But, then again, it might not. So far, Jordan Phillips has done zero to show he isn’t telling the truth. Last year, he contributed 400 plus in snaps for Miami. If this year he can make even modest advancements in both quality and quantity, he and Suh could be quite the foundation to build the rest of the defense on.
The knock on Phillips has never been talent. His talent is indisputable. IF he adds consistency, then he could end up as one more big subplot in a season of subplots for the 2016 Miami Dolphins. Go Fins!!!

…count me in the “show me” section …I do think that against last year’s schedule, just the improvements in the OL would have made a winning record, maybe even better
…but this schedule looks brutal …for instance, I don’t count pats as a win even without Brady …Belichick is the real strength of that team and he’s had 2 years to bring their bu QB up to snuff …same goes for most of the schedule …we’re better but so are most of them …so I’m sticking with 5-11 …if we go 2-0, then I might get on the wagon with y’all
Defensively!
The Dolphins interior line I would rate between NFL top 10 threw 20th
The Dolphins Line backers (If’sssssss, IF’sssssss)
The Dolphins Corner Backs I would rate in the top NFL 6th threw 12th
The Dolphins Safety’s I would rate in the NFL 1st threw 5th
We are in trouble if our linebackers cannot stop the run game?
Steve, in my opinion I’d say the interior line could be a strength and CB’s more limiting factors. LB’s are a big ? …Jordan the biggest. But, I think the D will be a product of a good O. If the O produces then the pass rush strength will cover up the D’s weaknesses. If the D is expected to carry a stagnant O then they might be in trouble. Again, there are a lot of ? before we can really evaluate the team. But, it’s so much fun anyway. What do you think of Vigil and Hewitt? I think Hewitt could end up a producer…Vigil might just be a STer and back up.
Like you said Lemmus,,,, a lot of “ifs”. Last year I was chugging the Kool Ade without taking a step back and really looking at the team/coaches, GM as a whole. Was a disaster waiting to happen last year from top on down. I feel that we are coming into this season with a much better foundation. I believe that coaching alone on both sides of the ball will make a big difference and should show succesful results. I do feel that this is a better team than last years from top on down, and because of that I can not see a worse record than last years. In fact, there should be a few more wins in store with or without the “ifs”. Should the “ifs” (Jordan, Kiko, RG, Ajayi, Phillips, Tannehill) pan out and the team stays relatively healthy, I could see a major improvement, possible 10-11 wins?
I always was very down on Philbin…I hated the guys demeanor from the start, so my expectations were never high. I did think the D would be pretty good up front though…never realized how timid and inept Coyle could be. I just want to see competent and consistent managing of this team. If they get 6 wins and play tough with very little WTF moments, then I’ll be satisfied about building for the future. Gase to me is the centerpiece of this season. To what degree he performs so the rest of the franchise will follow …beside talent acquisition, that is.

This Dolphins team will take a few season to gain their poised to truly compete. Winning 10 to 11 games is possible with a stronger than passing run game. Drake and Ajai will performed well base on their health. Isn’t it cheaper to take a Fullback now verses looking for another RB this season?
If our run game does not have opposing defensive concerned we will most likely witnessed a 4 to 5 win season?
No serious run game will make Tannehill shark bait again. Many teams understand that extra blocking is a necessity etc. We cannot open the season without a Fullback who can take the punishment of blocking, rushing for those difficult yards that will create a better play action for the pass etc. My thoughts are Miami’s two Rehabbing Running Backs will not provide sufficient blocking and rushing for the tight yards! We have seen total collapsed trying one dimensional passing.
Here are some teams taking this Fullback serious! Remember Denver Drafted a Fullback in the 6th round 2016.
•Will Johnson, FB, Steelers. Age: 26.
— Signed with Giants (2 years)
• Will Tukuafu, FB, Seahawks. Age: 32.
• Cory Harkey, FB, Rams. Age: 26.
— Re-signed with Rams
• Darrel Young, FB, Redskins. Age: 29.
• Derrick Coleman (RFA), FB, Seahawks. Age: 25.
• Jorvorskie Lane (RFA), FB, Buccaneers. Age: 29.
• Tyler Clutts, FB, Cowboys. Age: 31.
• Zach Line (RFA), FB, Vikings. Age: 26.
— Tendered by Vikings
• James Develin (RFA), FB, Patriots. Age: 28.
— Re-signed with Patriots
…lots of potential this year …but new coach and a slew of “ifs” keep me thinking the potential won’t overcome the ifs …still seeing 5-11 in that schedule, especially if we’re 0-2 out of the gate
…think Tannehill will come of age but lack of run game will kill offense …as will OL injuries
…defense is all over the place …waaaay too many ifs at play there …Suh and Jones are the only solid positions …everything else is an if this, if that …Jordan still a no-show …LBs up in the air …CBs an all new unit possibly …DEs old and injury prone …ouch
…aaaarrrrggghhh …still thinking about the NFL Sunday Ticket …new home is in Buccaneers media area and its a 2+ hour drive to Joe Robbie …like I said …aaaarrrrggghhh
…hope all you pollyannas are finally right …would love to relive ’72 one more time
Never had even one 72…you’re a lucky man. I see this season (unless most if’s flops) as minimum of 6 wins with a top of 10 – maybe 11 if stars aglin. I think Gase and his ability to put people in position to succeed and health are the tops of must have’s, followed by T-Hill performance and defense capability. If you look at last year, even with all the turmoil and terrible coaching and injuries when Miami got ahead they cruised to a easy win. It was an easier schedule, but this year’s team with competent coaching and a whole off season point in a sane direction will allows much better results. Now if Gase and Co are “special” as billed then we could see a fine season. I think 2015 team would have made the playoffs if they had this staff. Now that they have a better Oline in both talent and depth, this should be a solid year despite the “tough” schedule. Again, it could all collapse because we don’t really know how good Gase and CO are and if the many If’s will be more off than on, but come on…we ran a third of a season with Philbust and an impromptu untrained HC…this has to be 6 wins bare minimum. Pats week W, Browns W,Titans W, at least 1 W with either Jest of Bills Chargers likely W, Rams W, Niners W That’s 7 there and I’ll knock it down 1 to play it safe. So to me that’s the floor of a non asinine franchise. They don’t get 6 and play solid most of the time they lose close ones, then this regime isn’t as good as billed.
If, “if” Phillips can continue to grow and progress he can be a “BIG” piece to the puzzle. Miami’s D-Line should be decent and a more consistent Phillips can make this group good -to- very good. I don’t think this line will have trouble creating pressure on QBs. They MUST be able to stop the run, or at least keep the second level players clean, for Kiko and Jenkins to stuff the run. If we can consistently stop the run and make teams one dimensional (some help from the offense = scoring, would help as well), this “D” will flirt with top 10 status the entire year, with the ability to crack the top 5.
Top ten in sacks = playoffs!!!
I agree Dunner. I think this defense will be more of a product of the offense. I think this D will be less of an all around defense that dictates and more of a situation defense that thrives on pass rush. I think as long as Kiko is healthy they will be able to slow the run. But, the real strength will come in teams pressing to play catch up with Miami’s O. I think the general framework has been set up a limiting defense that has great pass rush to support a potent O that attacks depth and puts up points and can balance it all out with runs. I don’t see 72, but they “COULD” have a nice little season that set up better things in the near future.
