Jordan Phillips was considered a luxury pick last season in the 2015 NFL Draft. A super talented prospect who could dominate with a rare combination of size and agility, but inconsistency dropped him into the second where Miami pushed aside more pressing needs to take the best player available.
In his 2015 rookie season, Phillips registered 19 tackles and 2 sacks. The stat sheet doesn’t pop, but if you watched him play you’d say there were stretches where his play did.
Phillips without a doubt has room to grow…as do most second year players. Phillips needs to build his consistency through professionalism in preperation and approach. But, one of his big knocks was the inability to generate pressure by choosing to ‘stall out and bat passes down’ rather than fight through blocks. This is Phillips second season, and in a recent interview he spoke of his need to grow. He spoke of “mindset” and the “little things” as areas he has improved on.
It’s far easier to talk about fixing your flaws than actually doing it. It could be hot air and rhetoric. But, then again, it might not. So far, Jordan Phillips has done zero to show he isn’t telling the truth. Last year, he contributed 400 plus in snaps for Miami. If this year he can make even modest advancements in both quality and quantity, he and Suh could be quite the foundation to build the rest of the defense on.
The knock on Phillips has never been talent. His talent is indisputable. IF he adds consistency, then he could end up as one more big subplot in a season of subplots for the 2016 Miami Dolphins. Go Fins!!!
