Going into the off-season, the Phins had quite a few positions that they needed to improve. Unfortunately, this is the NFL and not the MLB, or European Soccer, where there are no salary caps and teams can spend as much as they want, because if there was no cap Ross would surely have no qualms about paying for the best team. However, since the NFL does have a salary cap, a team like the Dolphins can only fill so many needs in one off-season. The Dolphins spent a truckload of money to fix the middle interior of their defense on Suh, so they were unable to afford to acquire a top-notch cornerback like Revis, to go opposite of Grimes. Instead, Miami decided to address that position with lower-tier free-agents and two draft picks.
As a result, the Dolphins have added 4 new cornerbacks to the roster to help compete for the other cornerback position opposite of Grimes and the Nickel position; Brice McCain (free-agent from Pittsburgh Steelers, Zack Bowman (free-agent from New York Giants), Bobby McCain (5th round draft pick from Memphis), and Tony Lippett (5th round draft pick from Michigan State). These four new incumbents will join Will Davis, Jamar Taylor, and Walt Aikens in an all-out royal rumble for the starting cornerback position opposite Grimes and the Nickel position. Even though they did not sign a legitimate former starting CB, I do like the approach of adding a lot of feisty competitive guys that will all be hungry to get the chance to be a starter. I have said this before, but I will say it again, competition breeds performance, and this will be one of the best position battles in camp, and each player will benefit from the competition.

My two front runners to win the starting spots are Jamar Taylor as the outside CB and Brice McCain as the Nickel back. Jamar Taylor is now entering his third season and has been fighting through injuries the past two seasons, so we still do not exactly know Taylor’s true potential. In his limited action, Taylor has flashed brilliance, and he has actually even done an admiral job in run support along the perimeter of the field. Most pay per head review sites would say that as long as he can stay healthy, then he can be the guy, however, whether he can stay healthy or not is a huge question mark.
Brice McCain was the starting Nickel back for Pittsburgh last season and he did a very good job for them, including coming down with 3 interceptions. He is on the small side at only 5’9”, 187 pounds, but he plays extremely aggressive and physical and should have no problem solidifying the Nickel position.
One dark horseplayer to push for the starting position could actually be Walt Aikens, depending on if they want to use him as the depth at one of the safety positions, or if they would like to let him compete for the starting CB position. He has some desirable physical traits being 6’1” and 210 pounds, and as a Rookie from a small school last season (Liberty) he was able to get a decent amount of playing time. He was a raw player when we selected him, but another year in the system could really help him to make that next step. He would be my sleeper pick as a player to push for that other starting CB spot.
Who does the rest of Miami Dolphins news fans think will end up being the starting CB opposite Grimes and the Nickel back?
