Luke Warm on Phins Trading Top Players for Draft Picks

Top drafts picks are only good if the right players are selected

Given the current trajectory, the Miami Dolphins may not win a game this year. But that doesn’t mean they won’t ‘entertain’ us with their player personnel decisions along the way until the trading deadline October 29th. Already, in less than a month, the Dolphins have traded away 2 out of their last 4 first-round draft picks.

Sure, for years I have wanted the Dolphins to trade assets and start accumulating picks. However, trading away young, potential Pro Bowl, first-round picks wasn’t what I had hoped for.

Minkah and Tunsil were considered cornerstones just a month ago

Now there’s a lot being said about the situation with Tunsil and even more with Minkah. But there are three sides of every story: the Dolphins side, the player’s side, and the truth, which is probably somewhere in the middle of the two.

While ‘what’s done is done’, I don’t see it as some Phins News fans do. I don’t think this was all Minkahs fault and don’t agree that this is a case of he wasn’t ‘who we thought he was’.

Yes, Minkah was projected to be a player who could play many positions. But why make him learn six positions? Why not just stick him in the slot where he excelled last year, let him get comfortable enough to master that position, and THEN move him around a bit?

The Dolphins wanted to use the guy at practically every position on defense and didn’t care what this ‘supposed cornerstone’ felt about it. Also, how many players in the NFL are asked to bear that much responsibility? Not many, if any.

The other thing is that Coach Mike Tomlin (yes Super Bowl-winning and consistent playoff-bound Coach Mike Tomlin), who is known for his Defense, has stated that Minkah will be used at Safety first and won’t be asked to learn every defensive position.

I think Minkah will be terrific for the Steelers.

So I’m sorry, but I have to agree with the better coach and organization on this one. The Dolphins were asking way too much.

I will keep a close eye on Minkah and even Tunsil over the next few years. Will these players reach their full potential with their new teams? Unfortunately, I believe they will.

Miami Received three blue-chip draft picks for Tunsil and Stills. Two 1sts and a 2nd should be enough picks that even the Phins find one good player. So I’ll bet with the pay per head bookie business sites that this one to work out okay.

As for getting equal value from the Minkah trade…

… that won’t be so easy. And if the Steelers start winning, it will be even harder.

Yes, we received a 1st Round Pick for Minkah. The problem is the Phins have to actually (not in theory) select someone as good or better than Minkah. I hate to say it but Miami’s track record with draft picks isn’t the greatest. So there’s a decent chance we select a player who’ll end up more of a bust than a boom…

.. look no further than DeVante Parker and Charles Harris for proof of that. Funny, they are still here whereas Minkah and Tunsil, who have the potential to be pro bowlers, are gone.

Didn’t Chris Grier threaten to quit if they didn’t draft Minkah?

As David Hyde has said, “Ross wanted to trade back and draft Lamar Jackson… Grier wanted Minkah.”

This doesn’t give me much confidence for the future.

I’m sorry but this isn’t the way to build a team.

Now, if we are ‘Tanking for Tua’ and use that Minkah pick on an Offensive Tackle (who ends up a good one), I’ll change my tune. Miami has three first-round picks in 2020, those picks should be Tua, a Left Tackle, and another O-lineman.

And if they actually do select Tua, they’d better protect him immediately.  With Miami’ luck, they’ll find the right QB finally… and then he’ll get hurt because they went cheap on their O-line.

What are the rest of the Miami Dolphins news fans thoughts about what Miami has been doing lately?
