Marino A Better Fit As ‘QB Asset’ This Time

Marino is back in the quarterback room with QBs of a kindred spirit

When Dan Marino became a coaching asset to Ryan Tannehill a few years ago, I could only smile. Dan the Man was back with the Phins and Tannehill could only benefit, even if in a small way, from having a HOFer for guidance.

Tannehill began to round into form by mid-2016 and the future looked bright. Then an injured knee late in the season sent Tannehill’s career into a nosedived.

You don’t need the best bookie software services, like AcePerHead.com to know Marino’s rehabilitation of Tannehill ended ingloriously.

When Brian Flores brought Marino back, the question was would the Dolphins have duds or studs for him to work with?

Chris Grier made two surprising moves by acquiring mercurial Ryan Fitzpatrick and ‘media pariah’ Josh Rosen. Some fans were unhappy about the situation and others jubilant… most landed somewhere in between.

This time Marino will have quarterbacks and a staff of a similar mindset

Ryan Tannehill got a bit of a raw deal during his stint with Miami. He suffered under a terrible O-line, weak running game, poor coaches, and schemes that didn’t focus on his strengths. Now, I don’t think even in a perfect setup he’d of ever become a top tier QB. But, his 2014 performance could have been the norm rather than the oddity.

Even still, Tannehill didn’t have the arm or mental composition to be a true gunslinger that can carry a franchise. He didn’t have the pocket presence, ability to race through progressions, and then there were the fumbles. The Tennessee Titan recognized this with Marcus Mariota and built the team and scheme accordingly. On the other hand, the Phins were slow on the draw.

But all is aligned now, Tannehill is in the right spot for his career… and Marino has players to work that have a kindred mindset and skillset.

Say what you want about Fitzpatrick and Rosen… but they are gunslingers with top shelf arm talent

Now, Marino will have a far greater effect on Rosen than Fitzpatrick who has 13 seasons under his belt. Fitzpatrick is his own man at this point. You have to love his recent quote with Joe Rose and Zach Krantz, “there’s been a lot of shade and disrespect thrown my way for a lot of years.”

He’s a fighter.

We need to remember that Marino’s not here to work on either man’s mechanics or fundamentals. They have position coaches for that.

Fitzpatrick said, “He’s (Marino) been a neat presence to have around, not only as a Hall of Fame quarterback but just as a guy, knowing some of the things we go through whether it’s off the field with family or on the field. He has great perspective on everything. It’s been great getting to know him.”

Marino understands what Fitzpatrick is going through… ‘shade’ was thrown at him a well throughout his career. The burden of lingering questions is something both Fitzpatrick and Marino share intimate knowledge of.

That and a gunslinger’s mentality.

Caldwell, the scheme, and Marino could play the steadying role that Fitzpatrick has lacked for most of his career. If Fitzpatrick finds consistency, Miami would have a diamonds in the rough at the most critical position in the game… even at the age of 36.

The same can be said of Marino and Rosen… and in this relationship, Marino can have the most impact.

When you watch Rosen play you see shades of Marino on the tape.

No, Rosen isn’t Marino… But the little movements that buy time in the pocket, willingness to take the hit, the quick release, guts to attack a tiny window, and ability to hit every area of the field are similarities in both men’s game.

Where they are very different is that Marino is bold swag and Rosen mostly quite calm. Rosen doesn’t need to be fiery Marino, but the inner confidence is what Tannehill lacked… and what Rosen must have.

Rosen held it together pretty well under all the pressure of last season and the media barrage this offseason. But, you could see that there was a heaviness on him. Football is a game where confidence is key and leadership at quarterback is based production and personality. Marino can be of the most assistance here… and possibly a slow roll into the starting position.

Some feel that Rosen must be the starter Week 1 or the Phins will have problems. I can see that point of view… but I think whether it’s Fitzpatrick or Rosen, Miami needs just one quality quarterback to get back on track. But, there’s even a more rosy scenario: Marino has a hand in rehabbing both QBs who become the catalyst for the Miami Dolphins return to prominence. Wouldn’t that be poetic… and a damn nice story?! Why not. Go Phins!!!
