Miami Dolphins May Need To Add A Center

A healthy Mike Pouncey is difference maker, but will he be healthy in 2017?

A healthy Mike Pouncey is difference maker, but will he be healthy in 2017?

Mike Pouncey hasn’t played a full season in a long time

The Miami Dolphins made some incy-wincy, baby steps this past season in getting more production from their Offensive line — especially when Center Mike Pouncey was in.

However, they still need at least 2 more quality lineman to really make a big stride in 2017.

Health plays as important a role as talent with this current line-up.

In 2016, the unit had a chance to be pretty good, but injuries destroyed that hope.

When the 5 starters did play together, the result were domination. The glimpses of this domination was Jay Ajayi rushing for over 200 yards in back-to-back games, against two teams that were playing very good football at the time.

Of course, the 5 guys only managed to play together a handful of times.

The biggest ‘victim’ of the injury bug was Pouncey and only played in 5 games in 2016, due to his nagging hip problems. While one of the better Centers in the league, Pouncey hasn’t been able to complete a full 16 game season since 2012.

The frustrating part is that no one, not even the pay per head bookie service Guide, has any idea if Pouncey will over-come these reoccurring health issues, or if he will continue to miss games.

Miami would love Pouncey’s leadership and obviously wants him to play. And his contract makes it near impossible to cut him. However, they need to prepare for the reality that he will once again miss time due to injuries.

The Center is the leader of the O-line and has his hands on the ball every play

Miami must look to the free agent market or Draft, in order to acquire another quality Center.

Kraig Urbik did a decent job in relief. But, if Pouncey does go down, Miami will still need a second center, even if it as a back-up to Urbik.

Some of the free agents Centers that will be available are Joe Hawley (Tampa Bay), Cody Wallace (Pittsburgh), John Sullivan (Washington), Brian Schwenke (Tennessee), J.C. Tretter (Green Bay), and Ryan Wendell (Carolina).  In the Draft there are a few quality Centers available such as Ethan Pocic (LSU), Pat Elfein (Ohio State), Jon Toth (Kentucky), Mason Cole (Michigan), Jay Guillermo (Clemson), and Kyle Fuller (Baylor).

There are options out there at Center, so it would be prudent for Miami to expand their search to the Center position as well.  What are the rest of the Miami Dolphins News fans thoughts about looking for a Center along with Guard?
