Cameron, Clay and Sims,(and Mathis?)….. Oh my

After a bizarre day yesterday, where there were reports that the Cleveland Browns re-signed former Pro Bowl TE Jordan Cameron to a 2 year deal for $15 million, they turned out to be half true. The contract was correct, however the team was not. The result is that Jordan Cameron is coming to Miami, and even though most sports gambling fans think this will mean the end of Clay, the Dolphins are still optimistic they can retain him.

Clay has visited with the Bills and is scheduled to meet with the Browns, however he left Buffalo without signing a contract, and came back to his home in South Florida. In addition, Miami has the option to rescind their transition tender to Clay, however the phins are very much still interested in keeping Clay on the team, and now pairing him with Cameron.

Their vision is that they can use Clay as an H-back and have both Cameron and Clay on the field at the same time, similar to what New England had with Hernandez and Gronkowski. Also don’t forget that Miami has an upcoming young talented tight end in Dion Sims, who made quite a few impact plays last season and has flashed a lot of upside. If Miami could keep Clay, then Miami would have one of the best and deepest tight end groups in the entire NFL.

Throughout the years the NFL has seen a lot more use of tight ends in the passing game. Not only has the tight end been more active in the passing game, but teams are even implementing more double tight end packages. In an offense like Bill Lazor’s where he likes to spread the ball around and use double tight end sets, a combination of Cameron, Clay and Sims would be close to unstoppable, especially in the red-zone. This would be Miami’s version of when a basketball team decides to go big on the court.

If Miami wants to really get fancy, they can also even line up Suh as a full back and truly have a goal line power package. Honestly what is a team going to do on the goal line, when they see Suh as the blocking back, and Cameron and Clay as the bookends on the line? Miami can run or pass, so how would a team stop them?

On a side note their was a rumor that Miami was interested in trading for former Pro Bowl Guard Evan Mathis from the Philadelphia Eagles. It is interesting because even though Mathis is regarded by sports gambling fans as one of the best guards in the NFL, he is still a 33 year old player coming off an injury that is due an expensive contract, and would probably cost a middle round draft pick to acquire. Even though he would definitely be an upgrade over Dallas Thomas, between of his age, cap number and giving up a draft pick to acquire him, I would say he is probably not worth it. Miami did come out later and deny the report, however that does not mean that they do not have interest in Mathis at a better price. Also there is still the chance that the Eagles will release him because of his cap number, so Miami may be waiting for a more opportune moment to acquire his services.
