Miami Dolphins Spend HUGE in Free Agency

The Phins didn’t play small ball in Free Agency

Whoa, Nelly! The Miami Dolphins dominated the opening day of Free Agency by spending over $202 million in FAs so far.

With all these big moves, you can bet with the pay per head bookie services like www.AcePerHead.com, Chris Grier and Brian Flores want the Phins to make some noise in the 2020 Season.

Rumors said that the Phins were looking to be movers and shakers in the 2020 Draft. Well, I don’t know if this will end up the case, but they certainly had been a prime player in Free Agency.

Things just became very interesting for the Phins upcoming season.

Will this ‘interesting’ turn bring excitement come the 2020 Postseason? The draft will go a long way in determining that. Still, Miami has added a ton of firepower to a lackluster squad.

The list of Free Agents in the Phins’ huge Day 1
  • 6’3”, 250lbs DE / ILB Kyle Van Noy (age 29) signed a 4-year deal worth $51 million. Van Noy has been dependable missing only 1 game in his last two seasons. His 2019 PFF grade of 83.5 is backed by a stat line of 51 tackles with 4 for losses, 6.5 sacks, 3 forced fumbles, 2 fumble recoveries, and 2 passes defended.
  • 6’0”, 205lbs CB Byron Jones (age 27) signed a 5-year deal worth $82 million making him the highest-paid corner in the league. Jones was ultra-healthy missing only one game in his career and posted a PFF grade of 76.1 in 2019. Despite the knock that he’s only nabbed two interceptions in his career, Jones is an excellent man/press player who can tackle.
  • 6’3” 267lbs DE Shaq Lawson (age 26) signed a 3-year deal for $30 million. Lawson has had an inconsistent career and was a role player in 2019 for the Bills. Still, in limited duties he earned a PFF grade of 68.3 and notched 32 tackles, 6.5 sacks, 2 passes defended, and 1 forced fumble.
  • 6’6” 334lbs G Erik Flowers (age 26) signed a 3-year deal worth $30 million. Failing at tackle, the massive Flowers moved to guard with the Redskins and had some success. In 2019 he posted a PFF grade of 68.3 allowing 2 sacks and committing a 16th best 6 penalties.
  • 6’0” 205lbs S Clayton Fejedelem (age 27) signed a 3-year deal worth $8.55 million. Fejedelem has played spot roles as a depth player. In this role, he posted a 65.5 PFF grade last season.
Are the Phins done in Free Agency?

I don’t know if the Phins are done spending. They could be adding players as I write. What I do know is that so far, offensive tackle is now the prime missing piece. The Phins must be aiming to get one in their top two picks. I can see either Derrick Brown or an offensive tackle being the first pick. And certainly, if Brown is taken at #5, or after a small trade back, offensive Tackle must be their second pick! No?! Go Phins!!!

What are some pointer’s about drafting a player like Mahomes:
Is most likely not the most polished player but able to stay healthy and the player with the most upside in my opinion may have flaws but able to overcome and win the big games.

Some day 3 players who have this upside could be great backups etc.

Deondre is a strong 2nd or 3rd rounder who will get drafted in the 6th or 7th round. He has played on the big staged and performed well but failed to injury and off field girl friend incident left his career to suffer severely. Had not been for this Deondre would without a doubt been a 1st rounder.

Still looking over your picks… so far I like them…

      • Steve

        Thanks Admin

We all know there’s plenty of talent around the country its just what the Dolphins feel that will work for them. Most of us have a questioned marked about the 1st five players especially the QB position.
Herbert is there for the Dolphins with 3 touchdowns on the ground in the Rose Bowl game against Wisconsin and As a senior, he passed for 3,130 yards and 37 touchdowns with 543 rushing yards and 10 rushing touchdowns and 6 intersections and was named 1st Team All-State and the Southwest Conference Offensive Player of the Year. Just my opinion the Flip of the Coin you have Derrick Brown on the other side of the ball brings https://youtu.be/xIdbdZiIkRo.

    • admin

Trey Adams is a bit too weak and injury prone for 18… I like Jones better. Adams might be better had later in the 2nd… don’t like injury history and lack of strength. He didn’t bench at the combine, running from showing he improved on his greatest weakness. Yeah, I like him better in the 2nd.

Patriots have had five QBs start since 2000, while Dolphins have had 17
The Patriots have had just five quarterbacks start games from 2000-2016: Drew Bledsoe, Tom Brady, Matt Cassel, Jimmy Garoppolo and Jacoby Brissett.

The Dolphins have had 17: Jay Fiedler, Damon Huard, Ray Lucas, Brian Griese, A.J. Feeley, Sage Rosenfels, Gus Frerotte, Joey Harrington, Daunte Culpepper, Cleo Lemon, Trent Green, John Beck, Chad Pennington, Chad Henne, Tyler Thigpen, Matt Moore and Tannehill.

Miami should not fall a sleep at the wheel on future QB’s I’m not selling Hurst but I have put it out there that regardless of all the Dol-Fans critics beware! We may just play against him on Sunday’s?

Will the New England Patriots target Jalen Hurts as the long-term replacement for Tom Brady in the 2020 NFL Draft?
When it comes down to it, Hurts is only one of many potential quarterback options for the New England Patriots. They can go in many different directions at the position, but Hurts stands out as a player who the Pats would typically like. Watch out for him as a potential pick for the team when they go on the clock at No. 23 overall.

Howard is nice pick up on the cheap. What do you think?

    • Steve

Howard I don’t know much about just what I’ve read and some tape.Drafted in the 5th round by the Bears and After being the workhorse for Bears teams that won three and five games, respectively, his first two NFL seasons, Howard is a part of a running game that has taken a back seat to quarterback Mitchell Trubisky, an arsenal of targets. Traded to the Eagle’s for what a 6th round pick is an head scratcher for me? We got a 4th round pick for Jay Ajayi?

The Eagle’s the deal for Howard looks like a home run for the Eagles, and a whiff for the Bears.

Howard has rushed for 443 yards and five touchdowns, including a season-high 96 rushing yards in a crucial win against the Buffalo Bills last week. He scored three touchdowns in a road upset of the Green Bay Packers in Week 4, too.

The bottom line Howard was an excellent picked up by the Dolphins and should be commented for seriously taking the run game serious. I believe in the Duo threat Running Backs which Stills does not warrant going into the season with just Howard/one proven Running back Having the opportunity two draft the top running back in the draft! Taylor’s 40-yard dash time of 4.39 seconds was the fastest recorded by a running back at the combine. who rushed for 2,003 yards and 21 touchdowns on 6.3 yards per carry last season. Having this type Duo puts Miami with the most Feared Backfield in the League and the Entire NFL must watch every game.

    Continuation the running Backs:

That feat has been accomplished just three other times – Franco Harris and Rocky Bleier for the Pittsburgh Steelers in 1976; the Cleveland Browns’ Kevin Mack and Earnest Byner in 1985; and the Atlanta Falcons Warrick Dunn and Michael Vick in 2006.

    1,000-yard Duos:

1972 Dolphins – Csonka and Morris
1976 Steelers – Harris and Bleier
1985 Browns – Mack and Byner
2006 Falcons – Dunn and Vick
2008 Giants – Jacobs and Ward

  • Steve

    Continuation the running Backs:

While Kick gained a respectable 521 yards, it was the tandem of Csonka and Morris that made history. Csonka, the Hall of Fame fullback, led the Dolphins in rushing with 1,117 yards on 213 carries and scored 6 TDs. Meanwhile, Morris rushed for an even 1,000 yards and scored a then-club record 12 touchdowns. By doing so, Csonka and Morris became the first set of runners from the same team to rush for 1,000 yards in the same season.

  • Steve

    Continuation of the running Backs:

Carrying the load, and the football, that season was trio of running backs – Larry Csonka, Eugene “Mercury” Morris, and Jim Kiick – that helped the Dolphins break the NFL record for rushing yards in a season held since 1936 by the Detroit Lions. (Related story: Milestone: Single season rushing record).

  • Steve

    Continuation of the running Backs:

The 1972 Miami Dolphins featured a “no-name” defense and an offense that relied heavily on the run despite the fact that their quarterback Bob Griese and main wide receiver, Paul Warfield , were future Hall of Famers. The unique blend of talent led them to a perfect 17-0 record that included a victory in Super Bowl VII.

Many fans truly believed you can get by with a mediocrity backfield. Going after the Top players once again is not the priority for Dolphins?

History dictates the Dolphins Super Bowl appearances was 5 and two wins/Rings came from having THE BEST BACKFIELD IN THE LEAGUE/Defense/Offensive Line.
Larry Czonka, Mercury Morris and Jim Kick:
Since those Supper Bowl Wins we have failed short taking short cuts. The Miami Dolphins have since then knocked on the door with Lamar Smith, Ricky Williams, Ronnie Brown, Jay Ajayi have put us in the playoffs.

Great news, but I still think we need the QB before the tackle!

    • admin

I know, but they might view Rosen differently than the media or don’t like the QBs there. Also, if they are trying to make a move they need an elite LT. It will be interesting, Stephen.

Think the Phins are going with Jordan to help out Ballage with Laird and Gaskin sprinkled in. Don’t think they will get an RB high or at all in the draft.

      • Steve

Nonetheless, Howard was a productive back when the Eagles fed him often. He finished the season with 525 rushing yards on 119 carries after the Eagles traded a conditional late-round pick to the Chicago Bears for him.

        2019 Eagles ATT 119—525 yards—-6 TD
        2018 Bears- ATT 250—935 yards—-9 TD
        Career——–ATT-897 –3,895 yards–30 TD

        Mean while our Dolphins:
2019 leading rusher was the QB
Fitzpatrick, Ryan QB 54 attempt 243 yards
Mark Walton RB 53 attempts 201 yards
Drake, Kenyan RB 47 attempts 174 yards
Laird, Patrck RB 62 attempts 168 yards
Ballage, Kallen RB 74 attempts 168 yards
Gaskins, Myles RB 36 attempts 133 yards
Albert Wilson WR 5 attempts 45 yards

        Going into 2019 NFL season:

Flashes were no longer good enough. 2019 The Dolphins needed one or both to become offensive focal points and help the transition from Adam Gase’s offense to the new system since the options beyond Drake and Ballage are suspect at best. Going into the 2020 season say if Howard is injured then does the team result back to relying on Fitzpatrick rushing etc.?

        Going into 2020 NFL season
Dolphins top rusher are projected Howard RB and Fitzpatrick, Ryan QB
