Miami Drafting a Running Back

football gambling

Even though the Miami Dolphins latest signing was Knowshon Moreno, the former Denver Running Back, Dennis Hickey and the Dolphins do not seem to be finished looking for more talent for running game next season. Hickey has expressed many times that he prefers to find running backs in the middle to late rounds of the Draft, because he feels there is a ton of value to be found at that position. Like I have stated many times in Phins News, he found Doug Martin for the Tampa Bay Bucs with the 31st pick, so his words have some weight in regards to that position and the draft. So even though the Dolphins just signed Moreno, it should not be a surprise that they are now focusing on scouting for possible middle round running backs to draft.

Running Back’s Coach Jeff Nixon is currently on the road, and just had a private workout and meeting with an interesting prospect. His name is Terrance West and he played this past year for Division I-AA Towson, who lost in the Championship to North Dakota State. He is coming of a record breaking season in the Football Championship Series subdivision, where he ran for 2509 yards and 42 touchdowns. He is 5’9”, weighs 225 pounds, and just ran a 4.54 at the combine. He is currently projected as a potential 3rd to 5th round pick. He definitely has the numbers, but there is a huge question mark on him not having played at the Division I level, so Pay per head sites like Ace Per Head fans would argue there is a huge high risk to reward on a player coming from a small school like this.

The first thing I thought about when I heard West’s name, stats, and school, was when the Dolphins drafted Lex Hilliard from Montana in the 6th round of 2008 NFL draft, who finished his college career with 3419 rushing yards and 44 touchdowns. Then basically came and did nothing on the Dolphins, and then bounced around the league ever since. Obviously these are two totally different individuals so it is not fair to presume that West’s NFL career will take the same path as Hilliard, but it is fair to say that West will have many doubters coming out of the gate. Only time will tell if Terrance West will be a hidden Gem or just a Division I-AA legend that was a bust in the NFL, but it is encouraging to see that the Dolphins are doing their do diligence. Based on where he played college ball, I would say anything earlier then the 5th round may be a stretch, but don’t be surprised if Commissioner Roger Goodell is calling his name as a late round draftee for the Miami Dolphins.
