Poe would be expensive, but worth every dime
The Dolphins have been busy bees during this first week of free agency, and there has been a lot to be happy about if you’re a Miami Dolphins News fan.
Summing up the events so far:
The Front Office made it a priority to take care of their own first by resigning Stills, Branch and John Denney and extended Jones and Cameron Wake.
In addition, we significantly improved our Tight end group by trading for Julius Thomas, and then singing Anthony Fasano–who was ranked as the best blocking tight end in the NFL last year. We did lose Dion Sims, but these two additions should make for an overall upgrade.
The Dolphins also made a trade for DE William Hayes with the Rams, who is an older player at 31 years old, but he provides a lot of experience, a steady 5 sacks a year, and more importantly was ranked as the 11th best DE against the run last year–which should be an immediate upgrade for Miami in that area.
Poe and Suh and Phillips would be a steel wall against the running game
We also signed Guard Ted Larsen, who is more of a depth player that can play both guard and center, but he has plenty of experience starting and will be in the running for one of the two starting Guard positions. He was ranked 77 out of 82 Guards last year, which is not very good, so let’s see if this is actually an improvement or not.
Then Miami added LB Lawrence Timmons, who was a beast against Miami in the playoff game, where he torched Miami for 2 sacks. I love this move because Timmons is extremely durable and is an immediate upgrade to our linebacking unit.
Lastly, the Dolphins just signed Safety Nate Allen, who was a part time starter at safety last year for Oakland, but has plenty of starting experience with 76 games started over his 7 year career. He is going to replace Isa who unfortunately was released, and may never play again due to his unfortunate neck injury last season. It’s highly unlikely that he is an improvement over Isa, but he should be a capable starter that also has decent ball hawking skills with 13 career interceptions.
Now, here is where it gets even more interesting.
The Dolphins still have some holes to fill, and they have over $28-$24 million in cap space. They can still get rid of some players to save some cash, but they need to get Jarvis Landry a new contract, sign draft picks, some more depth free agents, and hold some in case of emergency for injuries during the season as well.
Poe is an absolute beast against the run
The latest name to hit the interest wire for Miami is Kansas City Chiefs DT Dontari Poe. Poe has spent his career playing a 3-4 scheme, however moving to a 4-3 defense should not be too much of a difference considering he would be paired with Suh. Poe is a two time Pro Bowl with 202 career tackles, 13 sacks, 12 passes defended, 2 forced fumbles and a fumble recovery. Real Bookies site lean heavily to Poe being an immediate boost to our D-line and run defense. This also shows that Miami is not 100% comfortable with Phillips having more snaps with the departure of DT Mitchell. However, he has a visit with Indianapolis first on Sunday, so if he makes it out of there without a contract, then that would open the door for Miami to make a move. What are the rest of the Miami Dolphins News fans thoughts about our interest in Poe, and our other recent free agent signings so far?
