I distinctly remember the day Jarvis Landry was selected in the 2nd round of the 2014 draft. Many Miami Dolphins News fans were bashing this pick because Landry had a very slow 40 yard dash time for a wide receiver. All Landry has done since then, in his first two seasons in the NFL, is to break Miami Dolphins receiving records and get selected to his first Pro Bowl. Talk about making people eat crow – don’t worry I too thought we had other areas of need.
Landry is the ultimate competitor – and that IS the heart of football! His desire to always get better and give everything on every play has propelled him into the Dolphins number 1 receiver spot. He is arguably already one of the best slot receivers in the NFL and heading into only his 3rd season, which means there should be plenty of highlights to come.
Landry made the Pro Bowl this season as an alternate. But his performance during the actual Pro Bowl proved to the best pay per head reviews that he should have been selected as a starter. He finished the game with 3 catches for 81 yards and 1 touchdown. He had the second-most receiving yards in the game of any receiver. But the tackle after the interception and the knocking of the ball away from a defender that would have been an easy interception should why greatness awaits Landry – whenever he steps on the field every play is played like his last.
Jarvis is the kind of player that you can build a team around. He is a team player, and his leadership and passion (while that has gotten him in trouble) cannot be taught. His kamikaze attitude is infectious to both fans and players alike. That “questionable” pick by the Dolphins have given them a receiver that teams actually need to game plan against – it’s been a while since that was the case. It’s a good lesson for all “draft experts” that elusive, pads wearin’, game-speed can trump spandex enhanced, 40-yard dash.
It will be interesting if teammate DeVante Parker also plays up to his billing. These two youngsters have the potential to be a lethal receiving group for many years to come, and in a passing league, that is a very encouraging thing. Go Fins!!!
