Mike Gesicki Shines Day 4 Of Camp

Gesicki flashes in Day 4 of Training Camp

Gesicki has a load of talent, the only question is can he translate his ability to the Pro’s

With A.J. Derby sidelined due to injury, Mike Gesicki had a perfect opportunity to shine on a cloudy Day 4 of Training Camp. To his credit, he raised his stock a fair amount with 2 T.D. catches in Red Zone drills.

Yesterday was a bad day for Gesicki. Blocking drills made it abundantly clear that he had a long way to go in in that area. Walt Aikens abused Gesicki… as did everyone Gesicki faced. But poor blocking was a wart that fans didn’t need pay per head reviews to know was coming. We all expected it to take time for that skill to develop. The primary reason Miami drafted Gesicki with a 2nd Round Pick was for his receiving skills, not blocking. It was his ability to make plays in the Red Zone that made the Dolphins brass and fans giddy as a school girl.

Now I’ll leave any talk of ‘Gronk Junior’ on the sidelines until Gesicki blocks at even an adequate level. But Gesicki’s performance today puts a positive grain on the scales, especially the one-handed T.D. he caught that was a thing of beauty. Check it out here.

Gesicki could turn this Tight End group into something special if his play today continues

Yes, it’s just one practice. The road ahead is long. Still, there was a hint of clutch in his performance. Getting abused in practice as a rookie can have a lingering effect. The bounce back shows some moxy… and that’s as important as talent.

Phinsnews expected he would be a slow riser. His blocking skills will likely only begin to show strong improvement in his sophomore season. But his receiving skills are a different story. We see him finding his niche as a role-player with ever-growing duties… and to perform those duties with some impact. Today’s flash, at least, offers hope he’s heading in the right direction.

And there was further good news on the Tight End front. Durham Smythe also showed his strong trait with some good blocking. Even though points are pretty, blocking is the key to this season. Smythe’s blocking is a key ingredient to a successful season and one that was sorely lacking in 2017. Also, Thomas Duarte made a few catches. Duarte’s T.D. catch, though, had him walking off with shaky legs after a hit by Aikens.

If Derby can get back on the field soon, then it appears at this point, they have upgraded the Tight End position. And as we fans have known for a while, this is a position of impact and one where the Dolphins have been invisible for years.

Nobody wants to listen. Everyone in Dolphin Land down there want to criticize the man for not blocking. Listen up, people. He was not drafted to block and will learn this skill. He was drafted to catch balls and this man is a human sponge! Super glue is jealous his abilities. Wait. Mark my words. This PSU graduate like most is a super intelligent, give everything he has person and we won’t be sorry. I promise.

I totally agree… he just needs to be even a slightly sub-par blocker and then we are talking big time. Anything better than sub par and sky is the limit. Even still he’ll be a brutal roleplayer at the very least. My biggest concern was his ability to get off the press because that’s the only skill issue that could affect his primary talent. I think a year in the NFL strength program and he’ll be better prepared to block, but that’s what Smythe was brought in here for. This kid says all the right stuff and looks hungry… I wouldn’t put it past him to improve his blocking. Still, I’m always a bit skeptical and wait for rookies to prove it. Today was his first step in doing that… if he gets it right it will be a BIG, BIG deal, Ed.
