Mike Wallace’s Replacement

Last week we laid out a plan for the Dolphins’ wide receiving unit, which in summary was to part ways with Wallace, either through a trade or release him, and then sign Randall Cobb in free agency and draft 2 wide receivers from this deep draft.

One of the wide receivers we mentioned drafting in the third round was Miami Hurricane Phillip Dorsett. Many pay per head reviews are comparing him to Mike Wallace with his blazing speed, and even going as far as saying that he is a more polished route-runner than Wallace was coming out of Ole Miss in 2009, so let’s take a little bit deeper look at Dorsett.

Last season he was playing with a rookie QB, so Miami decided to lean on their running game and feed the rock to Duke Johnson, who the Phins may want to consider drafting as well, but we will talk about him another time. As a result of the Hurricanes’ run-heavy offense, Dorsett did not get that many targets. However, he made the most of his opportunities with 36 receptions, for 871 yards and 10 touchdowns. What really stands out is that he averaged a whopping 24 yards per catch, which are huge chunk yardage plays, something that the Dolphins offense is desperately missing. A lot of those plays are because he is a deep ball threat and has the ability to beat defenders deep and then take it to the house, however, he does make defenders miss on short sweep passes across the field as well. So even though Tannehill is not that accurate with the deep ball, he can still throw the ball to Dorsett short across the field and he can pick up big yardage on his own. He is a small receiver listed at 5’9” and 183 pounds, but he plays big and is not afraid to get hit catching passes across the middle of the field, something that Wallace has not been able to do.

Dorsett participated in the Senior Bowl and was one of the biggest standouts in practice because he constantly was able to get separation by utilizing his elite speed and route-running. His combination of speed and precise route-running also allows him to get open on short passes because he can stop on a dime and get in and out of his breaks very quickly.

Lastly, the Dolphins scouts and coaches on hand at the Senior Bowl did take notice, because they made it a point to speak to him privately. Regardless of what Miami decides to do with Wallace, they should strongly consider drafting Dorsett with their 2^nd or 3^rd round pick. He is a younger, cheaper, tougher, and more team-oriented version of Mike Wallace, so why not draft Wallace’s replacement right now? What does the rest of Phins news fans think about Dorsett?
