Multiple teams called the Phins looking to trade for Josh Rosen
A report came out late last night that teams were inquiring about the availability of Josh Rosen during the offseason. As per the report from NFL Network’s Mike Giardi , “Teams called the Miami Dolphins about Rosen’s availability this offseason, and thus far, the Dolphins are in no hurry to trade him.”
For many, the surprise isn’t that Miami didn’t trade Rosen, but that teams were interested in his services. It makes sense from both sides.
Rosen has arm talent and was a top 10 pick the draft, so of course teams are looking to see if they can get a cheap roll of the dice. Despite Rosen having an underwhelming career so far, plenty of teams are willing to take Rosen off Miami’s hands for a Day 3 pick. It would be a huge win for them if they could get Rosen on track and the risk of wasting a late-round pick is well worth the chance.
Miami spent a blue chip on Rosen
The Phins have full control over Rosen’s contract until 2021… or until 2022, if they use the 5th Year option. Since they spent a 2nd Round pick on Rosen they are in no hurry to dump him. Why should they be? Rosen will only cost Miami $5million over the next two years. That’s a steal even if he is the backup quarterback. And though the 5th Year option costs substantially more, it gives Miami leverage should Rosen show something over the next two seasons.
Teams figured the Phins would be desperate to dump Rosen since they have Fitz and spent the 5th overall pick on Tua. They figured wrong. This Phins regime has shown patience and the guts to hold to a longterm view rather than a hand-to-mouth approach. Also, despite the media saying otherwise, Flores has been consistently positive about Rosen.
Patience brings the best opportunity for reward
Book it: Ryan Fitzpatrick will win the starting quarterback position and keep it all season… if he remains healthy. Fitz won over the team and staff in 2019 and will outplay both Tua and Rosen. In no scenario will Brian Flores just pull Fitz to jam in Tua unless he gives them the best chance to win. But, there is more to it than this.
I don’t expect the Dolphins to spend big in Free Agency going forward. You can’t sustain success in the NFL that way. You only sustain success by having quality draft classes. If Fitzpatrick starts this season and plays even close to his level of 2019 he will give the Phins a compensatory 3rd Round pick compensatory when he becomes a Free Agent in 2021. You can bet with the best pay per head software like www.AcePerHead.com that Chris Grier and Brian Flores have taken this into account.
If Fitz does indeed start all of 2020, Tua will be green going into the 2021 Season. Rosen will offer Tua stiff competition due to experience–unless he is a total bust. This will be good for both Tua and the Dolphins. It will demand the best from Tua and create some trade value for Rosen if makes a push to be the starter.
Keeping Rosen offer far more than moving him for a late pick
Rosen offers a cheap, known quantity at the marquee position who could earn them blue-chip draft pick returns. Any decent backup will cost Miami far more without the possibility draft pick return. Yes, they could draft another quarterback, but that would leave them with two green signal callers and that doesn’t offer the best chance to win in a critical 2021 Season.
Remember, Flores is all about the best chance to win.
Moving Rosen for anything other than a quality pick doesn’t make any sense. Rosen has two preseasons and two full Regular Seasons to show his ‘stuff’. Tua has a history of injury, so should he could miss some time in 2021(let’s hope beyond hope this isn’t the case). This would give Rosen a chance to shine, and if he does shine and shines brightly, then the 5th Year option gives them the leverage to get the best compensation in a trade. An extra blue-chip draft pick for the Dolphins in 2022 or 2023 would be huge.
This Phins regime isn’t skittish
While the jury is still out on how good this regime is at drafting and coaching, it’s clear that they have the guts to be patient. Past regimes would have babied their star QB or jumped at the first offer for Rosen. They couldn’t hold their water and that kind of personality always ends up a loser. Even if this regime doesn’t end up a winner, at least it won’t be because they lacked patience and guts.… And that’s a comforting feeling. Go Phins!!!
