The old saying goes, if it’s not broken then don’t fix it. So logically when something is broken then one should fix it. But the Dolphins will be bringing back Defensive coordinator Kevin Coyle for a 4th season, and the question is why bring back a coach of a unit that has progressively gotten worse each of his 4 seasons with the team?
Any football gambling fan that you speak with will say that the Dolphins Defense absolutely fell apart over the last half of the season. The funny thing is that in the middle of the season, the defense was playing very well, and was ranked as high as number 2 in overall defense. However due to multiple of reasons the defense fell apart like a house of cards at the end of the season when it counted the most.
Coming into last season the defense was supposed to be the backbone of the team, whereas the offense was the part of the team that most free bookie software websites were worried would not be able to perform at a consistently high level. Instead, the Defense choked and did not play at the level that we all expected them to play at. Coyle inherited a defense in 2011 that was only allowing on average 19.6 points per game, now after 3 seasons under Coyle’s guidance, the Dolphins allowed 23.3 points per game in 2014.
When Mike Sherman was underperforming as the Dolphins offensive coordinator, Miami made the right decision and got rid of him and replaced him with Bill Lazor, who greatly helped Tannehill and the offense to become better and more productive. Now the logical decision would be to do the same thing with Coyle. He has had 3 years to coach the defense and each year they have regressed, and there was plenty of talent on that side of the ball. The Dolphins had two pro-bowlers and both were on defense, but the offense has been clearly outperforming the defense. Someone needs to take responsibility for the meltdown on defense, and bringing back Coyle for a 4th season obviously is not signaling that anyone will be held responsible for the defensive downfall.

The bottom line is not a positive sign to the start of the off-season. They brought back Philbin, who finished 8-8, but I can at least stomach that, but bringing back a coach whose unit has regressed each season under his guidance for 3 seasons is not a smart move. Now we have to hope that Hickey can work his magic and find some talent on the defensive side of the ball, because since we are stuck with the same defensive scheme, then at the very least we need to find better players that fit into this scheme.
