Not much help this weekend
The Dolphins enjoyed their bye week this past weekend, however the rest of the AFC East played and unfortunately for the Dolphins they did not provide them with the help they needed. The Patriots came out and showed all the talking heads that they are still a solid Championship type team, by pounding the last undefeated team in the league. The Bills with the help of Orton and Carpenter pulled a rabbit out of their asses and stunned the Lions for a road victory. The Jets were the only AFC East team to lose, and they lost in humiliating fashion by being the first team to be shut out this season.
The Patriots definitely proved that even though they may have some issues, they still have a capable coach and QB that knows how to win when their backs are against the wall. The game against the Bengals does not mean the Patriots are now ready to make a run for the Super Bowl, but it should put the Dolphins on notice that the road towards the AFC East crown still goes through New England.
The Bills made a QB change by benching EJ Manuel, and even though the Bills looked lost for most of the game, replacement QB Kyle Orton was able to lead the Bills back from a 14 point deficit in the 2nd half of the game. Orton played admirably going 30 for 43 with 308 yards and 1 touchdown, and will most likely be the starting QB this upcoming Sunday against the Patriots. Most football gambling fans would say that Orton is an improvement over Manuel, so the Bills should be in the thick of the AFC East race all season, backed by their stellar defensive line.
The Jets are basically falling apart and have no answers at QB. They did not even reach the opponent’s side of the 50 until almost half way into the 4th quarter. Things are not going to get any easier for them as they face off against Peyton Manning and the Broncos this upcoming weekend. Most football gambling fans would say that the Jets are heading no where fast and are not going to be involved in the race for the AFC east. The only thing the Jets are going to provide in the AFC East this season is a possible spoiler by stealing a victory from either the Bills, Pats or Phins.
Lastly the Dolphins are now a half a game behind the Bills and Pats, and as long as they do not tie this weekend, one of those teams will have an extra loss on their record. Personally I hope the Bills win, because every extra loss on the Patriots’ record is going to go a long way. Plus the Pats would then find themselves 0-2 in the division, which is not a strong start in regards to possible tie breakers.
In addition the Dolphins are going to have a tough home game against the Green Bay Packers. However, the Dolphins do play well against very good QB’s, and teams, so this might be the perfect recipe for an upset. One other side note, is that the Dolphins originally opened as the +3 ½ home underdog on Sunday night, and now on Monday afternoon with all the action coming in on the Packers, the line has actually dropped to +3 for the Phins. That is definitely a good sign for phins fans that the line is going the opposite way of the action.
