Well after a short skip and jump down the road of gloom, I thought it high time for some sunshine. I know this sunshine is but a ray amid a dark horizon, but it is nevertheless a bright spot that MAY help to bring about more green pastures in Miami’s future.
The ray of sunshine I am speaking of is Jordan Phillips. YES, for this season a guard, corner or linebacker would have served the Dolphins quantitatively more, but he was drafted and now here we are.
When the Dolphins drafted Jordan Phillips I spit out my drink, to which my wife scolded me for, and my friend laughed – A DT?! But, so far, even in his limited role, he has produced enough for me to focus on his play and get excited when he enters the line up, and for a franchise that is about to enter a rebuilding mode, this pick might pan out better – especially if he continues to progress as he has.
With 2 sacks, Phillips leads all rookies in sacks, and while 2 sacks isn’t earth shattering, when you consider his limited snaps, it along with his tape and measurable, you see Miami “could” have a very fine 2nd round pick on their roster. Also, if you notice just from the stat line that most of his tackles are solo and that he has two deflected passes. Physically you can’t ask for that much more from a NFL player, and when he give his full effort his effort is felt by the opposing team.
For a man of his size, Phillips has displayed the obvious strength for a man 6’5” 327, but also surprising speed and agility and he has often used all three to harass the QB and stop the run. IF he could match his production with his potential he could be a true force in the NFL – and along side Suh it COULD be a true strength. Now the words often, could, if are highlighted due to his reputation and back issues. He has been productive in his limited role and that could be what he is if his “low energy” tag sticks. So far though he hasn’t played with a low motor and, although the verdict isn’t in, the jury is leaning towards the opinion that he has turned the corner.
So far the 2015 draft class has been less than stellar to say the least, and not even the best bookie software sites in the world like www.AcePerHead.com are betting it turns into a top ten, but if he becomes 80% of what could be and plays alongside Suh we could have our best combo since Bowens and Gardener…and that would be nice.
