Part II: Finding the Real Josh Rosen

A full season of film on Josh Rosen is now under our belt

Watching Josh Rosen for a full season behind a totally inept Offensive Line and throwing to receivers with a case bad case of the dropsies added a ton of context to his ugly rookie stat line.

Let me emphasize this point… Rosen was sacked 45 times over 14 starts! This is 15 more sacks than any of his fellow rookie starters. Also, Arizona was dead last in total team rush yards and YPC.

Not much help for a rookie… not much at all.

Now my quickdraw summation is there’s no doubt that the floor for his production is no less than the 2nd Round Pick they paid for him. A decent starter or good backup for the 62nd pick would be a solid win for the franchise. Unfortunately, Miami will only have a bright future with Rosen under center if he’s much closer to the value the Cards spent on him with the 10th overall pick.

But, the good news is Rosen showed plenty in his rookie film, especially given all the impediments to his success: Two bad OCs along with poor support on the field. If he can fix the mental errors in his game and the staff is thoughtful on his development, Rosen’s acquisition certainly has the potential to be a steal for the Miami Dolphins.

Ahhh, that dangerous word again: Potential.

While that word is an ugly one, often full of disappointment for Miami, in Rosen’s case there’s a bit more legit than pie in the sky. But, he isn’t the next Dan Marino either… let’s get that straight.

There will never be another Dan Marino–Ever.

Okay, onto to the film… with links to the video:

In Part I of “Finding the Real Josh Rosen” the first six games were covered. Unfortunately, the video of that film was restricted by the NFL and could only be viewed through YouTube. Many missed it. This hyperlink here will take you to that film study… in case you didn’t see the fine print notice by YouTube when the video was clicked.

Here is the link to the 2nd film study of the last 7 games. In this one, I added some plays in this one where Rosen showed outstanding pocket awareness and movement to evade the rush or get the ball off. He turned out to be far more slippery than I had expected. Night and day with former Dolphins QB Ryan Tannehill in that regard.

Over the entire 14 games the strengths that stood
  • Elite arm, able to drive the ball accurately on deep outs, over the top, and the deep middle
  • Ability to adjust the speed of throws to help receivers
  • Mobility in the pocket, the instinct to evade the rush and climb the ‘ladder’ while keeping his eyes downfield
  • Toughness and willingness to take a hit to get the pass off
  • Even-keeled personality… although, maybe too even-keeled
  • Gunslinger mentality

Say what you want, but many of Rosen’s strengths are ‘have it or not’ talents that nearly all the greats possess. Arm strength, guts, accuracy, toughness to take the hits are in your DNA or not. These traits Rosen has in spades. Of course, so did Jeff George. It takes more than these gifts to be a great QB. Still, you have to be in it to win it.

Thankfully, most of Rosen’s warts are common in rookie QBs and could be minimized through quality coaching. But a few of his weaknesses are hardwired into him and will hamper Rosen throughout his career.

Over the entire 14 games the flaws that stood out
  • Late delivery (correctable)
  • Slow to go through Progressions (correctable)
  • Not a vocal leader (hardwired?)
  • Hit and miss on boots and roll out passes (hardwired see graphic below)
  • Ton of tipped passes (correctable)
  • A tendency to stare down receivers (correctable)
  • Wild throws to the short left side of the field (possibly correctable)
  • Gunslinger mentality forced the ball into very tight coverage (hardwired)
  • Sloppy ball handling from the center and on impact (correctable)
Josh Rosen struggled throwing on the move even in college

Again, many of Rosen’s flaws can be corrected with good coaching and a willingness to work on his craft. While it’s not a sure bet with the bookie software services, like Ace Pay Per Head, that either is certain to happen, I do like the odds better than years past. What I can say is despite the talk of him being a quitter and afraid of competition, this isn’t the case. He was giving it his all through Week 17. I don’t worry about him being soft in the least.

If you put my toes to the fire and force me to give a range of what Rosen can be, I’d say he has a floor of 7 and a ceiling of 8.5 out of 10. Now, what WILL he be? That’s THE story of 2019. Go Phins!!!

What does the film show you?

    Hello Admin

Myles Gaskin, Washington Huskey’s With the Miami Dolphins now, my thought is Admin with Gaskins he was on my radar list for the Fins earlier draft projection, Facts are Gaskins yards have come with the Pads on, he has been durable season after season. With the pads on Gaskins will outperformed most and will be a valuable addition.

The backs we have I like Drake and Ballard for sure along with Gaskins its on now. I’m certain Gaskins will be to valuable to cut off this team. He has unquestionable integrity etc. alone with Drake and Ballard. Yes, we have a fullback now its like finally someone is listening.

    USA TODAY Published 9:36 a.m. ET July 4, 2018

Gaskin’s first three seasons: 1,302 yards in 2015, 1,373 yards in 2016 and 1,380 yards a year ago. He’s even gone over 100 yards in each of three games against Stanford. (That seems more impressive.) No back in the country can match Gaskins’ consistency. Even as others land more national acclaim, he deserves to be recognized for delivering almost without fail for the front runner in the Pac-12.

I’ve watched some of Gaskins tape… he does look like the speed back that they use up in NE… can be pass block? That will be the key. I expect Miami to keep 4 RB plus the rookie FB.

    Hello Admin and Fin Fans

To many times Coaches and fans never know who they have! This is Josh Rosen and yes he is
A steal. Coach and place him in the best situation to build this Franchise correctly.
We still draft a QB in the 1st round next season for competition and the future if things don’t work out.
Don’t assumed like they did with Tannehill that he is the Quarterback without true QB competition. The end of the 2019 season will dictate to how early we draft a QB. Fitzpatrick could keep Rosen on the Benched??

I think they could. The coaches see enough in practice to have a pretty good idea to know what Rosen is. Nothing like live snaps of course. But he could sit under Fitz and start next year. I still think they should grab a to QB if he fell to them anyway. QBs are worth having as many good ones as you can get.

    Admin!

I don’t think its correct to bench Fitzpatrick if he can take us to the promised land. We don’t have to rushed to start Rosen! The longer Rosen ride the Bench the better he gets. He’s a smart Quarterback. My true thoughts are we have a 1st round Quarterback for a second round etc. The Dolphins have not drafted a QB in the 1st round since??

Bob Griese picked number 4 Purdue (1967(
Dan Marino picked number 27 Pittsburgh (1983)
Ryan Tannehill picked number 8 Texas A&M (2012)
We have not invested properly in the quarterback position for whatever the reasons???? Josh Rosen is a 1st round Quarterback only the Fins did not draft him in the 1st round.
I said earlier if we beat the Patriots both games this season, I’m happy.

I’d be very happy… but they loaded up and will be very tough to beat in NE… splitting would be a good sign.

    Hello Admin

Josh Rosen is a steal for the Dolphins and the Cardinal were just sorry across the board last season. A solid run game is the key to Rosen success. I would play Fitzpatrick and sit Rosen until Fitz P. Burn out for the season and Fitz P. may not burn out. That’s not a problem if making the playoffs. But it will be a problem if the Dolphins are 8-8 for the season.

We cannot go into a season expecting to Be Tanked! Base on the experts we are dead last anyway.” Now” I just believed that we have the best coaching staff in the NFL. “BOLD YES BUT TRUE”! Bottom line Brother I don’t have a clue how to play Rosen over Fitz P.?

  • If you don’t have an offensive line to protect you, and, if you don’t have first class receivers except one to be an offensive threat and if you have receivers dropping passes, and if you have only two seconds to get a throw off before you get clobbered, and, if you are knocked around by the big nasty brutes who would like to make your life miserable and they actually get to you more than anyone else in the league and being hit by these guys constantly and you wonder when my extra padding won’t help much if they keep knocking me all over the place, it is a wonder that Rosen actually did as well as he did under these circumstances. Let’s chalk up the first NFL season to a lesson in survival and the realization that he is tough, talented and psychologically mature young quarterback. Now let’s see how MIAMI can create a powerful team effort to produce a winning season.

I tried finding a key portion to quote and agree with… BUT, damn, I could find one portion I didn’t put an exclamation point behind. Nice, Mike! Agree 100%… but, I do thin Rosen need a breather to regroup. Beating and pressure like that can mess QBs up… maybe not. I don’t know his mental toughness. But, he might be best served if the scenario of Fitz beating him out and then screwing up for Rosen to step in mid season. I like the kid and think he showed a ton dealing with the adversity. I just don’t understand all the hate after Ispent the last month researching him on film and his history. Very weird case. If he makes it through his rookie season without PTSD and can fix his mental error, we have a steal of a trade… fingers crossed.

Rosen is now a second round pick, so his flaws are not so big in terms of cash and prestige. The Dolphins line still sucks but could get better. The Dolphins have a second rate injury prone receiver corps. Tight Ends could look greatly improved and our running game could take some heat off of Rosen if the line stays healthy and improves just a little. Fitzmagic might help Rosen by providing a good role model if he can stay healthy.

I hope Rosen figures it out!

Same as with Mike above, Van. I can disagree with one point. This could be a franchise turning trade… if all goes well. I can’t help but feel this franchise is more stable than it’s been in a long, long time.
