The Dolphins are currently involved in their OTAs and Joe Philbin is so pleased with what he sees, that he recently said: “his team is ready to play a game tomorrow.” That is an interesting statement from a man who the past two seasons during OTAs has said that his team has a lot of work to do before the season begins. Philbin can usually be counted on as a straight shooter, so a bold statement like this should be taken as a very encouraging sign.
The first OTA practice was a bit of a disaster for the Phins, and especially Ryan Tannehill. However watching the last few OTAs, it is becoming clear that Bill Lazor’s offense is a perfect fit for Tannehill. Lazor’s up-tempo offense requires an athletic, experienced, and intelligent QB, and Tannehill can check off all of those boxes. He struggled the first practice, which should be expected since he is learning a brand new offense, and he hasn’t had an organized practice since December. However, he has shaken off the rust and is settling into the offense, and looking especially sharp in the red-zone.

I have stated before that as well as Knowshon Moreno played last year, it is going to be hard for him to replicate those same types of stats in Miami, without the security blanket of Peyton Manning. He has not helped my opinion by coming to OTA visibly overweight, and as a result, he has been behind Miller and Thomas in starting team reps. I hope he gets his act together soon because most football betting software fans would say this is not a very good sign and this may end up being just a 1-year deal that ends in a farewell gift bag. Even worse is that a player not in shape has a higher chance for injury, so hopefully Moreno can snap out of it, and start getting into football shape and speed.
Fortunately, Moreno has been one of the few disappointments in OTAs, and there have been a lot more players that are looking poised to make a larger contribution to the team. For example, both Jamar Taylor and Dion Jordan are healthy and have been playing at the level that Phins fans were hoping they would play at last season. I am a firm believer in the old philosophy of “if you practice well then you play well.” So this a very good sign that these young puppies are starting to give some bite this off-season. One other player, who is a total dark horse is WR, Stephen Williams, who is a very tall 6’5, 208 pounds, that has bounced around the league for the past 4 years. His size is definitely intriguing, but besides that, he has been turning some heads with his solid performances during practice. It is always a great sign when players who were not even thought of making the team, are making plays and pushing for a roster spot. What does the rest of Phins fans think of Miami’s OTA sessions?
