Philm Study: Van Ginkel the Relentless Edge

Phins edge player Van Ginkel exploded in 2020

The Miami Dolphins’ blue-chip picks are still in the ‘wait and see’ phase of their evaluations. But, Chris Grier and Co. have clearly proved they can make far more with less using their later draft picks, UDFAs, and ‘song and a dance’ Free Agents. Edge player Andrew Van Ginkel is one of these bright diamond in the rough… and after his excellent 2020 campaign, he is close to the top of the list of all the Phins acquisitions.

It’s pretty clear when you watch the tape of Van Ginkel that his skillset and traits will carry his production well past the meager 5th Round used to net him in the 2019 Draft.

Miami really hit with this kid… and the tape made me far more impressed and excited about his future. I think the tape will do the same for you.

Van Ginkel is a more talented & athletic Robert Ninkovich

Van Ginkel earned third-team All-Big Ten honors in 2018 when he started 11 games and had 46 tackles, seven for loss, 4.5 sacks, two pass breakups, and one blocked kick. This earned him Miami’s attention with his selection in the 5th Round. His rookie campaign had some flashes but was otherwise nondescript. His sophomore season was quite the contrary, Van Ginkel notched 48 combined tackles (29 solo), 5.5 sacks, 4 passes defended, 7 tackles for loss, 3 forced fumbles, 10 QB hits, a fumble recovery, and touchdown return. PFF rated Van Ginkel the 12th best edge player in 2020… and even in his worst trait of pass coverage, he ranked 17th best over 71 coverage snaps. — Advantages to Using a Sportsbook for Your Pay Per Head Casino Services.

Here is a film study of Van Ginkel

As I said in the video, consider all the value Van Ginkel brings on the field and in the film study room with his relentless play. So far, Wilkens, Van Ginkel, and Seiler have flashed hard in my film studies with their commitment to giving 110% 100% of the time. But Van Ginkel is clearly at the head of the class in effort given on the field… and that’s with playing special teams!

Truly impressive!

At this point through limited exposure, Van Ginkel appears to be a leader, ultimately consistent, and a playmaker. If this level of play continues in 2021, you can bet with the pay per head bookie sites that Miami killed it in the 2019 Draft to get this level of talent for pennies.

Van Ginkel is just one more reason (among many) for Phins fans to be excited about the 2021 Season! Go Phins!!! — How Pay Per Head Software Helps Online Casinos Makes More Money.

Motor and hand technique is very good. A key is intelligence of play. I think of Nick Buoniconti – not the fastest or strongest but if you watch his film, he looks at the QB and OL then walks over to where the action will be and is always there to make the tackle. Zach Thomas was the same way – very good athlete but not the greatest physical talent but he was a scholar like Nick, figured out what was coming, and was always in the right position.

Absolutely, Sammy! The motor tied to intelligence is the trick to overcoming physical limitations. Can’t agree with you more. Van Ginkel looks to be very smart on top of his motor. This is a great brew for us Phins fans…

BTW: Sorry for the last approval. The system over here has me having to approve first-time posters and I was away for a week. All future posts will post automatically… again sorry, brother. Jimmy and I were both away.

    MJ,

Van Ginkel’s play is why Van Noy is gone. He actually out-played Van Noy when in! Now Van Noy was good, but he did not play up to level of his contract. By releasing him, Van Noy’s money was used for key pieces on the O-Line and elsewhere. Van Ginkel is huge bright spot. This also helps reinforce for me that finally we have a front office and coaching staff that can actually evaluate talent, not to mention working well together and on the same page! This is huge for this franchise. Hope your foot is coming along!

“Van Ginkel’s play is why Van Noy is gone.” Perfect… it didn’t makes sense till I watched the tape. Love watching that tape, brother.
” He actually out-played Van Noy when in! Now Van Noy was good, but he did not play up to level of his contract. By releasing him, Van Noy’s money was used for key pieces on the O-Line and elsewhere” Another aced comment.
“This also helps reinforce for me that finally we have a front office and coaching staff that can actually evaluate talent, not to mention working well together and on the same page!” I do need to see more with the blue chips, but their ability to maximize the non blue chips is pretty clear.
It really is huge for this franchise. I have such confidence in Flores, this defense, and the back end usage of assets. That alone make this regime better than any previous regimes.
The foot! It’s getting there… just can’t wait to run and lift again… at my age, the body degrades soooo fast… 2-3 more weeks. I. JUST. CAN’T. WAIT!!!
Thanks for asking Stephen… really, brother.

Van Ginkel has the intensity and stamina you love to see in a pass rusher. He should be even more effective this year because heat will be coming off both edges.

Agree. I also think he’ll come in stronger and in better shape. This base of intesne hustle is great to see and should get this kid to be a good one at some level, Van. Whatever happens, I’m confident that this defense will be good… even better than last year.
