Phins 2022 Draft Buzz Low, BUT…

Phins have a 3rd and 4th Round Pick that could be key!

By trading for Tyrek Hill, the Miami Dolphins pulled off a possible franchise changing trade this offseason that no saw coming. Six time pro bowl wide receiver Hill can take it to the house whenever he gets the ball in his hand just like he did against the Bills in the Divisional Round of the 2021 playoffs. Hill is the type of player that everyone wishes was on their team… and now he’s Dolphin.

However, the Dolphins had to give up a large haul of draft picks to acquire Hill, which leaves them with only 4 draft picks for the upcoming draft this coming Thursday. Oddly, all of the Dolphins remaining 4 picks are not even their own original picks in the draft and were acquired through trades.

Despite the singing of Tyrek Hill, Terron Armstead, Connor Williams, and the rest, the Dolphins need to make good with these few picks they have!

The 2022 Dolphins squad need some finishing touches

The Dolphins first pick this year is going to be with the number 102 pick, which is all the way at the near end of the 3rd round. After that they have a pick in the 4th Round with the 125th overall pick and then they finish up with two picks in the 7th Round, which are respectively at the 224th and 247th overall picks in the drafts.

Not a ton of ammo… but, enough firepower with the 3rd and 4th pick to find one contributor for the 2022 Season.

The draft is always something fans look forward to, especially when there has been no football for months. However, clearly this year has a lot less anticipation for Phins fans compared to past years. Yeah, it’s unfortunately hard to get excited when our first pick isn’t until the 3rd Round. But, the one silver lining is that most analysts are saying this draft has less top-end talent available than recent drafts. Maybe this was part of Grier and the Dolphins strategy in trading away picks for proven talents in the league, instead of taking shots on a weak draft class. Still, Chris Grier noted that this draft has depth at offensive linemen. That’s good news for us!

The reality is that the best sports betting software say the chances are low that Miami lands even a single starter from this draft considering that the chances of finding a productive starter dramatically decrease with each passing round. Still, plenty of productive players and qulaity starters were found last season after the 102nd pick: WR Amon-Ra St. Brown, G Royce Newman, RB Elijah Mitchell, OL Trey Smith, and RB Rhamondre Stevenson are some of them.

Either way, Phins have their list of players they are interested in

While the Dolphins filled a lot of holes this free agency period…

…most would agree it wouldn’t hurt to look for another Center, Linebacker, and even a young running back.

At center the Phins have Michael Deiter, who will be entering his 4th season in the NFL. He was moved to center last season but missed time with injuries which limited him to 8 games. The obvious hope is that he continues to improve. Nothing helps a player improve more than competition, so a late round Center could be a very sensible option.

The Dolphins have Johnson, Roberts, and Baker penciled in as the starting linebackers. All three produce, but it’s fair to say that none of these players is currently a Pro Bowl type game changing linebacker. Though, Baker is near special in his pass rush he has some holes in his game. Finding a quality linebacker is a hard task early in the draft, so with a late round pick the difficulty is compounded. Still, it could be worth the pick if he can out play one of these three players.

Running back finally got attention this offseason when Miami signed both Mostert and Edmonds to add to Gaskin and Ahmed. However, running back is notoriously one position that teams can find a diamond in the rough in the later rounds. This is more good news for us. Also it wouldn’t hurt to add some youth to that position and a longer term solution.

All in all, it should still be a fun Day 2 for Phins fans as we could find a good one to boost this roster in 2022!
