Phins $25Million Dollar Man Needs To Step Up!

Reshad Jones made too many BIG mistakes in Week 4

The endless media droning about the Dolphins 2019 ‘tank job’ would have a ton more validity… IF the Phins were losing despite the elite play of their top-paid players.

As it is, if the Dolphins brass is tanking, Xavien Howard and Reshad Jones must be in on it because their play is terrible and has contributed heavily to this ugly season. Considering that their combined salaries of $53mill this year is near 30% of the entire team’s CAP space, that’s a ton of negative impact.

Howard is currently PFFs 95th ranked Cornerback and Jones is the 48th ranked Safety with a coverage ranking of 91st.

Yikes!

While Howard saw a slight improvement in Week 4 against the Chargers, Jones’s coverage had several key breakdowns and was a big reason why the Phins lost. Extremely undisciplined in key moments, Jones was directly responsible for one touchdown and played a big part in two more scores.

Here are four key plays that needed a leader to make the smart play… not even an elite one, just smart

Jones is too undisciplined to play within this scheme

Jones had a couple of nice plays in the game… along with some poor angles, missed tackles, and the above big mistakes. This is who Jones is. When his role is a rover with the defense playing around him, he’s an impact player. But Flores’ scheme demands discipline and Jones is the square peg in the round hole. And in truth, a defensive scheme where he is a maverick is a little too susceptible to offenses because of Jones’ hit or miss instincts.

Could Jones be a fit? He could. But, the $25 million dollar question is does an old dog want to learn new tricks?

Now, Jones isn’t the only one to blame for the poor pass defense last week and he didn’t play Weeks 2 & 3. Even though Howard improved, he also made a couple of critical errors last week too. Then there is Eric Rowe who you can bet with the price per head sportsbook sites that he’ll get toasted half the time. But the biggest issue of all for this secondary is the tendency to have ‘crowded zones’… which will be examined more closely next article.

How these issues are handled will determine if the bye week will bring a better team or better tank. We’ll see. Week 6 is the firm fork in the road for the tank or not. Go Phins!!!
