Once the Phins use a blue chip on a QB, the wind-down of the honeymoon begins
The marriage of the Dolphins and a ‘top’ quarterback in the draft is near guaranteed this draft…
… If you believe all you read.
How this regime goes about acquiring a QB will be ‘must watch’ T.V. for certain. Hopefully, the fruits of their decisions are equally as fascinating.
Should the Phins use a blue-chip in FA or the Draft to acquire a quarterback, this regime’s honeymoon will take a turn to the ‘serious’ as results will be quickly expected…
… The velocity of this transition will depend on how much Chris Grier pays to ‘get ’em’.
Not only do you pay for a QB with picks and money, but the deeper investment is time. When the price is cheap, the ties are loose. But when you pay an arm and a leg, it becomes the ties that bind. The latter ties can choke a regime out of existence.
I don’t think that a quarterback being taken in the 1st Round by the Phins is a lock. Actually, I think the odds with the services like AcePerHead.com that it’ll turn out well are low… unless they stand pat and a QB falls to them.
Sure, Phins fans will be energized at the acquisition of a ‘big name’ quarterback. But all that excitement will turn to an equal level of vitriol should ‘the next Marino’ flop—again.
No matter how well the other picks of Grier & Co. pan out, the production of the quarterback they choose will ultimately determine the legacy of this regime.
Choose wisely… and choose multiple options… as a Phinsnews reader, Steve says every year.
This doesn’t mean that the rest of the team isn’t in need of a big upgrade…
… and it’s ‘QB or bust’ in 2019.
They do and it isn’t.
The best move for this young staff could be to keep expectations suppressed as long as possible. Brian Flores has all of his 5 years guaranteed, so he won’t be criticized for a lack of wins till late in Year 3. With a mulligan from both fans and owner, this season… and maybe the next, low win totals will be tolerated.
This leniency could change if they make a serious move to get a QB in this draft or Free Agency. While early losses will still be understood, the play of this QB will immediately be under a microscope. Also, advancement in terms of wins will be expected by the end of Year 2, instead of the end of Year 3.
So if a quarterback falls to them and they make the pick with #13, or lower should they trade back, the pressure will be on, but it won’t be as severe. If they reach into the Top 10 or trade to get one, they must nail it. The moment Grier brings in a blue-chip QB, the ghost of Dan Marino will rise to haunt Flores or finally get exercised.
Grier & Co. has 2-3 seasons to find their long-term solution for a quarterback before the negative criticism starts.
This new ‘savior signal caller’ will instantly be under a microscope. That microscope will quickly shift to Grier & Co. should this QB have extended struggles.
Maybe building the framework to put him offer the best odds for success? Setting up the system, the staff cutting their teeth, and assembling a quality cast first would offer the best long-term prognosis.
Ultimately, it’s about finding a high-quality passer. So if they find him this year (however they go about it) then this regime is cooking. No will complain about trading or moving up to get him.
Right or wrong, this is the reality of the situation. It’s not an enviable position to be in where one move is the end all be all. But this is why they get paid the big bucks… to make the right call. Don Shula found a Hall OF Fame QB twice and became a legend. We just need this crew to do it once… and we’ll be grateful. Go Phins!!!
