McDaniel is on the hotseat, and he should be! And Grier should be too
The Miami Dolphins suffered a humiliating season opening defeat against the Indianapolis Colts 33-8, exposing cracks in both execution, morale, and Head Coach Mike McDaniel’s future. Before you could take your first sip, the Dolphins were already out of the game. The destruction was so complete and one sided that it was almost comical, if it wasn’t so sad.
Miami crumbled so quickly under a combination of miscommunication and sloppy play that you could see the complete implosion midway through the 1st quarter and that’s sad. This performance was pathetic considering they had all offseason to prepare for this game. The final score reflected more than a poor game—it underscored the growing frustration around consistency in Miami’s leadership.
Tua, McDaniel, and coverage led the charge to the loss
After the game, Brandon Chubb and McDaniel spoke about players going rogue as being a core issue.
Let’s remember all we heard about all the ‘new culture”’ this offseason and it evaporated in a single week of the season!
I’m not saying it’s definitely the end of the road for this regime, but quotes like this from a team leader and the head coach sure does make it feel that way.
Quarterback Tua Tagovailoa struggled to adjust under the Colts pressure and coverage, throwing two interceptions and fumbling once. This was a killer. Add in Matthew Judon running into the kicker to give a knife in the heart first down, and this is as ugly a recipe as there has been under the McDaniel regime.
Tua and McDaniel are tied at the hip, so a performance like this from Tua and McDaniel’s inability to steady the team or call something up to at least show fight is as telling as it is damning Head coach Mike McDaniel was hailed for his analytical approach, innovative offensive schemes, and ability to relate to players. Yet, all three of these are the very reasons why he is nearing the end of his tenure.
Another Phins’ snow job in hell sold to fans.
Injuries compound the likelihood McDaniel is near the end
Injuries to ‘prize Free Agent ‘James Daniels, who played all of three snaps and is now on I.R., longer term injuries to Austin Jackson, and Storm Duck, leaves hope for the season as a lotto ball long shot. Miami could endure losing players almost anywhere except the offensive line and defensive back… and both position groups took hits.
This week’s game against division rivals the Patriots was considered a laugher a short time ago. But now top-tier coach Mike Vrabel must be licking his chops and a win this week doesn’t look so sure. A loss here could and should spell the end for both McDaniel and the season.
I think it’s a safe bet with the best pay per head that most fans know that McDaniel isn’t the answer now. But Chris Grier needs to also be finally held accountable too. No more Mr. Teflon or the fans should revolt. While we are in Year 4 of the McDaniel regime and still dysfunction is the calling card, we are in Year 10 of the Grier regime and the same can be said of his tenure.
Fans are tired of failure.
We are tired of incompetence.
We are sick of the company line that just a little more time with inept leaders is needed.
Maybe something good can come from an ugly season: a total house cleaning.
I’ll be rooting for the Miami this week. But if we lose and this ends of another failed season, I’ll be praying that at least this ugly year ended McDaniel and Grier’s career with the Dolphins.
Go Phins!!!
