Phins Camp Day 7: 1st String O-line Found?
The Phins “starters” on O-line returned from yesterday… Will they be starters Week 1?
The Phins O-line shuffle ended Day 7… for the most part. Dave DeGuglielmo and Brian Flores have ‘found’ what they are looking for with their starting Offensive Line. The ‘starting’ line up of LT Tunsil, LG Deiter, C Kilgore, RG Calhoun, and RT Davis was only briefly interrupted with Sterup at LT.
This is who they are running with folks… for now at least.
Phinsnews likes the lineup for it’s potential and predicted Calhoun as the RG a few months ago.
Davis has struggled a bit moving over to Right Tackle and Calhoun has been beaten by Wilkens. Natural. After a few days of practice and the scrimmage, we’ll get a better idea if they are really the answer or not. But it won’t be until Week 1 that we’ll have a true indication.
So stay tuned and throw a prayer in that the pay per head sites will eat their predictions.
However, the situation goes, this is the right move for the Phins and their direction. Miami needs to find quality long term starters and only fallback on ‘stopgaps’ if there’s no other choice. This is likely the reason for Flaherty being replaced. He had the script flipped. Reed or a vet found prior to the Regular Season can always replace Calhoun for a ‘steady Eddie’, in the worst case.
Right now this staff needs to shine up some rocks to find out if they are gold or coal.
Day 7 Training Camp reports:
- Mills, Ballage, Kiko, Jakeem, Chase Allen, and Albert Wilson didn’t practice
- Ryan Fitzpatrick had a bit of a sloppy one pick off Preston Williams hands too rookie Nik Needham wasn’t his fault
- Needham showed something-something today in replacement of Rowe
- Rosen rising with nice connection with Willams and Parker
- Mark Walton ran with the ones with Ballage out
- Sterup saw an extended look at LT today w/starters appears he really being considered for backup G and OT
- Sanders 53-yd FG from the left hash
- DT Adolphus Washington keeps blipping on the radar
- 1st string DL is consistent: DTs Wilkins & Godchaux, DEs Carradine & Harris
- Punter Stone Wilson waived yesterday
- Raekwon McMillan warmed up with the team but went inside with a trainer
- Parker had leaping TD over McTyer from Rosen… hmmm
- WR Albert Wilson had scheduled day off (maintenance)
- LB Jerome Baker is looking legit
- Gesicki still not hitting the ground running
- WR Preston Williams may make the team
- O’Leary again shows why he’s the starting TE
- Eguavoen & McDonald shinned
- Howard was in beast mode
The Dave DeGuglielmo replacement has paid off in one regard… the young ones are getting slapped to see if they bite back. This is an absolute must for this 2019 team. Let’s hope these pups have more pitbull than Labadore in them. Go Phins!!!
I’m worried about the right side of the O-Line. Davis may not be quick enough for tackle. And a free agent like Calhoun at Guard shows desperation. Of course there are exceptions in reference to undrafted free agents becoming good players.
I believe the Dolphins would have been better served to pick up another O-Lineman in the 2nd round, instead of trading it for Rosen.
me
Fitzpatrick will probably help the Dolphins win 4 or 5 games. Just enough to keep the Dolphins from picking up Tua or another top 3 QB
Guess a good part of ALL those draft choices for 2020 will need to be used in a trade up for a QB. And yes, Fitzpatrick will have to be back for 2020 to help the new QB
I just have to call it like I see it
Hey, Joe. I’m a big fan of Davis, but you are right he isn’t fast enough… BUT, he has high level strength and length… He MUST have good steps to cut off the edge and patience to keep from biting on the ole’ double move. He did very well against Peppers when he started there in 2017. Not sure he’s a long term answer even if he does nail his tech… but for this year, I believe he will.
The Pats regularly get undrafted and late-round players as starters on their line… not easy, but it happens across the league. This draft pushed a lot of Guard talent late in the draft and out of the draft. Calhoun is one of them. Guy had an excellent career and he does have a real shot. His run blocking and strength are the primary concern and I think the two are interlinked. Reed can always slip in their and be decent. In the end, Deiter and Tunsil should solidify the left and that’s more than we’ve had in a long time. The whole line is and should be a concern. Tomorrow and Week 1 will be big, Joe.
